The question on everyone’s mind is, “How do you replace one of the most prolific scorers in Endicott women’s basketball history in Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, N.H.)?” Head coach Debbie Buff hopes to answer that question in the upcoming 2009-10 season as the Gulls look to build on a program-record 23-6 mark from a season ago.

In her first season at the helm of the Gulls, Buff led the Gulls to a pair of lengthy winning streaks includ-ing a 14-game run that ended in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Finals against Salve Regina Univer-sity, 78-67, in Beverly, Mass. Debbie Buff and the Gulls hope to change their fortunes this season and hang the program’s first banner in the MacDonald Gymnasium.

Much like season, the Gulls have three members of the senior class looking to guide Endicott back to the TCCC Finals. Ceciley Chisholm (Lexington, Mass.), Kaylin Burke (Leominster, Mass.) and Rachel Hewes (Nashua, N.H.) hope to use their three years of experience to help lead the younger Gulls.

Chisholm missed the first eight games of the year last season due to illness but returned to finish third on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and led the team in rebounds with seven boards per game. During the TCCC Playoffs, the senior forward aver-aged a double-double of 17.3 points per game and 12.6 rebounds in the three games. Also looking to help out down low will be Rachel Hewes who brings front court depth and hustle to the team.

Kaylin Burke resumes her role as the floor general of the Gulls and the facilitator of the offense. Burke led the Gulls in assists a season ago with 4.2 per contest while finishing third on the team in steals (48). Helping

with the point guard duties will be Kate Kovach (Moon Township, Pa.) who also hit 25 threes last season and shot 38% (25-of-66) from behind the arc.

The junior class is well represented on the squad this season including a pair of returning starters from a season ago, Ashley Vitale (Wilm-ington, Mass.) and Ashley Wright (Merrimack, N.H.). Vitale, an All-TCCC Second Team selection in 2008, was second on the team in scoring with a 12.5 point per game average and led the Gulls on the glass with 168 rebounds (5.8 rpg). Ashley Wright was a long-range sniper from behind the arc a year ago, connecting on 40% (45-of-112) of her attempts while shooting a blistering 46% from the field as the two-guard. Wright was the player teams wanted to foul the least as she led the team in free throw percentage (91%) and also contributed defensively as the junior led the Gulls with 80 steals.

Brittany Kelleher (Wakefield, Mass.) looks to help out down low as the 5-9 junior averaged just over three points and three rebounds per game in just over 11 minutes per con-test. Local product Catie Cullen (Beverly, Mass.) hopes to add depth to a front court that was eleventh in the TCCC in rebounding (39.5 per game). First year player Stefanie Johnston (Burlington, Vt.) also joins the EC squad to add depth and defensive pressure in the back court. Johnston is considered one of the more physical players and once she has learned the system, should provide help both physically and on the glass.

Lone sophomore Nicole Heffernan (Londonderry, N.H.) hopes to see more action this year and add depth to the back court as the two-guard played in 14 games in 2008.

Head coach Debbie Buff will try to work four freshmen into the rotation this year including Jen McBrien (Medfield, Mass.), an athletic guard that will bring defensive intensity and add rebounding to the team. McBrien is expected to be a solid contributor right away as a freshman and compete for a starting spot at the guard position as the season progresses.

Helping out with the point guard duties will be Lauren Baryski (Walpole, Mass.) who will serve as the back up to Kaylin Burke. Baryski will be looked upon to run the of-fensive sets and is a real competitor who is very disciplined and can also shoot the three while also being a very strong defender. Also playing a role in the guard rotation will be Molly Cahill (Halifax, Mass.), a 5-9 guard that will aid on the glass and can shoot the three to help break down opposing teams’ zone defenses when called upon. Trish Ledbetter (Derry, N.H.) can play both the guard and forward positions and add a physical presence on the inside while also having the ability to step out and hit the perimeter jumper. Ledbetter’s physical nature helps her attack the rim aggressively as well.

Deborah Buff - Head CoachCoach Debbie Buff will enter her second season as head women’s basketball coach of Endicott’s nationally

respected basketball program. Buff was named head coach on June 20, 2008. In her first season at Endicott, her team set a school record with 23 wins and appeared in the TCCC finals and earned a bid to the ECAC Tournament.

Buff holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in Psychology from Cortland State and also holds a Master’s degree in Health Education from Russell Sage College. Coach Buff comes to Beverly after serving as a head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. She took over a program that was 1-24 and transformed it to a 15-12 team. She is the most successful women’s basketball coach in the history of RIT. In 2006-07, she was selected as Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year compiling a 15-12 record and RIT’s first appearance ever in the E8 and ECAC tournament. At Rochester Institute of Technology, she also taught in the wellness curriculum and served as an administrator.

Buff is no stranger to success, as she served as the first assistant at D2 powerhouse at the College at Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. for three years. As the top assistant and recruiting coordinator, she helped lead the Golden Knights to a top-10 National ranking and in 1999-2000, the top team in the region with a 34-1 overall record. It was in that year that Saint Rose advanced to the Elite 8 and their only loss came at the hands of the National Champions in Pine Bluff Arkansas. At St. Rose, Buff’s efforts also assisted the Knights in winning three-straight NYCAC Championships.

Coach Buff also brings a wealth of Athletic Administrative experience, as she served as the Athletic Director/Teacher and Women’s Varsity basketball coach at Bishop Maginn High School in Albany, N.Y. from 1985-2001. She was the only female Athletic Director at the Class A level to serve in that administrative position. In her fourteen years as a high school coach, Coach Buff closed out her tenure with a 203-57 record and captured Five Big 10 Conference Titles, A Section II Title, Regional Title and captured the New York State Title in 1996. In that same year, she was also selected as New York State Coach of the Year. In her free time, Buff volunteers for The Make a Wish Foundation.
