The University of South CarolinaAiken was chartered under authoritygranted by the General Assembly ofSouth Carolina and the Aiken CountyCommission for Higher Education in1961 after entering into anagreement with the University ofSouth Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken.

The Aiken Center opened itsdoors in September 1961 to 139students. Temporarily housed inBanksia, a renovated mansion in theCity of Aiken, the Center consisted ofthree full-time faculty members (oneof whom served as Director of theCenter) and one secretary.

Initially, the school offered onlyfreshman and sophomore levelcourses but throughout the sixties, the size and reputation of the Centergrew as word of its excellencespread among its constituents. In1968, the Center underwent aninstitutional self-study and wasaccredited by the SouthernAssociation of Colleges and Schoolsas a branch of the University ofSouth Carolina and as a juniorcollege. The first associate degreeswere awarded in June 1968.

The campus of the USC Aikenmoved from Banksia to its presentsite in 1972 and physical changesbegan to occur rapidly. At first, thepermanent campus consisted of 100acres and one multipurpose buildingwhich housed all universityoperations. A library was completedin 1975 and additional land wasdonated increasing the campus to144 acres. In October 1977, aStudent Activities Center wasopened. A classroom building wasoccupied in 1978 and one year later,an auxiliary services building was

added.An apartment

complex forstudents, PacerDowns, wasready foroccupancy in fallof 1984. Moreconstructionaladditions to thecampus includedcompletion of theEtherredgeCenter, RuthPatrick ScienceEducation Center, the Business and Education Buildingand the Alan B. Miller NursingBuilding. Additional land was acquiredincreasing the campus to 400 acres.

Academic and organizationalchanges also occurred rapidly. Thefaculty formalized its organizationalstructure and redefined its role in thegovernance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganizedtheir governing body and moreprecisely defined their role oncampus; the administration and staffstructures were overhauled andexpanded to meet the demands of thegrowing academic programs.

When the full-time equivalentstudent enrollment reached 1,066 inthe fall of 1975, the Aiken Campuswas permitted to plan for senior levelcourses, as well as create a numberof baccalaureate degree programs. Inthat same year, USCA receivedapproval as a four-year branchcampus by the Board of Trustees ofthe University of South Carolina andUSCA was designated a RecognizedCandidate for Senior CollegeAccreditation. In September 1976, theBoard of Trustees granted academicautonomy to the Aiken Campus. Thefirst bachelor’s degrees were grantedin May 1977 and USCA became afully accredited senior college.

Presently, the college communityis comprised of more than 3,300students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and28 administrators. USCA awardsbachelor’s degrees in more than 20major areas of study, an associate

degree in nursing, master’s degreesin two areas, and offers a variedprogram of continuing educationcourses for the wider community.

Coming off the program’s mostsuccessful season in school history, the return of four starters and sevenletterwinners should have made themonths leading up to the start of the2002-03 season one filled withanxious expectations for an encoreperformance. Instead, on August 7,former head coach Phil Sternannounced his resignation. The two-time Peach Belt Conference Coachof the Year was jumping to Division Ito head up the University ofMaryland Baltimore CountyRetrievers.

Following an extensivenationwide search, USC Aiken hiredMike Brandt to become the seventhcoach in Lady Pacer history. As theprogram, from the players to thefans, got to know Brandt, theyrealized there would be no unfilledexpectations for this team. In fact, there was a revitalization that wasoccurring.

“The change has been a positiveone for the players, a fresh start,”said Brandt. “I don’t know what theywere like last year, but this year theyseem happy, hard working, and veryreceptive to the coaching. Theplayers are eager to learn.”

Above: Spontaneous, on-court celebration following USC Aiken’s lastsecond buzzer beater versus North Florida.

“Based on the success this teamhad last year, our goal is to get to the[NCAA Division II] Elite Eight,” saidBrandt, who was 253-129 in 13seasons at Northeastern JuniorCollege in Sterling, Colorado.“I think that is achievable, and if youget to the Elite Eight, then anythingcan happen.”

Many people agree with Brandt’sexpectations. The Women’s DivisionII Bulletin preseason Top 25 poll, oneof two major Division II polls, has the2001-02 PBC Champions seventh. Moreover, USCA, according to thispublication, is the top rated team inthe South Atlantic Region, thusmaking them the odds-on favorite toreturn to the NCAA Tournament, winthe NCAA Regional, and advance tothe Elite Eight in Saint Joseph’s, MO.“A new coach leads the Lady Pacersand has plenty of talent to work with.Top backcourt in the region,” thepublication stated.

The WBCA/ESPN/USA Today Top25 Coaches Poll has USC Aikenranked 17th in its preseason poll.

Despite the national acclaim, thecoaches in the Peach BeltConference are not convinced Brandtand the Lady Pacers can repeat theirfeat from one year ago. Thepreseason poll has USCA second, narrowly behind Kennesaw State. In

2001-02, KSU along withNorth Florida, who is third in

t h e poll, were the LadyPacers biggestchallengers. Thosetwo programs eachsplit their seasonseries with USCA and

tied for the SouthDivision Title with 13-6conference marks, three games behind theLady Pacers’ 16-3record.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FUEL LADY PACERS

on track for back-to-back

The two-point separationbetween Kennesaw State (110points) and USC Aiken (108 points)was the slimmest in PBC history. Each team received four first-placevotes while North Florida garneredthree and Columbus State one.

So does Brandt see the nationalrankings and the high expectationsof this year’s team as a positive ortoo much pressure?

“I like to see them [the rankings].I think its great for recruiting, for ourprogram, and for the university. I tryto use it as a motivator saying thateverybody is gunning for you andyou have to prepare that much moreand take everyone’s best shot.”

If the Lady Pacers are able tosurvive their extremely challengingschedule, they will have taken thebest shots from several talentedteams. And right out of the gate, they open the season at theprestigious Sixth Annual Disney Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, FL. Eightteams from around the country cometo compete in what is considered thebest tournament outside of the EliteEight. USCA opens up with 10th

Aside from their challenging 19-game conference schedule, non-conference highlights include Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, North CarolinaCentral, Queens, and a two-gameseries with Claflin. Mars Hill finished

last season ranked number eight inthe nation after winning the NCAASouth Atlantic Regional andadvancing to the Elite Eight. NCCentral lost in the regional final toMars Hill after knocking off the LadyPacers 79-61 in the semifinals.

THE BACK COURTThe Lady Pacers will once again

have the best backcourt in the region, maybe even the country. Returningfor their senior seasons are First-Team All-Conference guards JamiCornwell and Julie Szabo. Both werenamed Second-Team All-SouthAtlantic Region in 2001-02. Szaboearned Kodak All-American honors.

“Jami and Julie have hadsuccessful years prior to this one, thus people will be gunning to slowthem down,” said Brandt. “But if theycontinue the success they have had,our team should be very good.”

Cornwell battled throughmononucleosis last season and stillaveraged 12.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 25 games. She isthird on the all-time scoring list with1,124 points and is already theschool’s all-time leader in assists(442), steals (218), and minutesplayed (2,623).

“Jami shows great leadership onand off the court. She can score, plays defense, rebounds, postsplayers up,” said Brandt. “She is amelting pot player.”

Szabo led the team in scoring lastyear at 17.0 points per game. A pureshooter, Szabo canned 83-of-219three-pointers and connected on aschool record 101-of-114 free throws(88.6 percent).

“Julie is a shooter, scorer, andrebounder,” said Brandt. “She is theplayer on our team that mostconsistently attacks the boardsaggressively.”

Also returning in the backcourt forthe Lady Pacers are two more seniorsin Katie Rokus and Katie Palizza.Rokus started five games down thestretch when Cornwell was out andhelped the team to a 4-1 record. Hersteady play in a tight conference race

that went down to the wire was vitalfor the Lady Pacers’ title run.

“Rokus is an intense, defensivestopper,” said Brandt. “She alsoprovides great leadership for ourteam.”

Palizza was hampered allseason with a lower back injury thatkept her out of 10 games. She willbe forced to play through pain attimes again in her senior campaign.

“Palizza definitely makes the all-heart team,” said Brandt. “She gives100 percent and is a very smartplayer.”

Three newcomers will add depthand talent to the backcourt. MindyAllee and Sarah Liebelt are the lonefreshmen on the team, while transferSarah Kendrick should have animmediate impact.

Allee was a Second-Team All-State player from Wisconsin lastseason. Averaging 21.0 points, 8.0assists, and 4.0 steals per game forthe Clayton High School Bears, Alleewill serve more as an understudy toCornwell this season, but should be

the star of the show in years tocome.

“Mindy is very skilled, strong, and understands the game. She isimproving by leaps and bounds as afreshman. I am very impressed withher,” said Brandt. “She can do someneat things you don’t see too manyplayers do.”

Liebelt is an Australia native whowill have some adjustments to maketo the American game, but will be afactor in the future.

“Sarah [Liebelt] is a transitionplayer right now. She is learningabout the American game,” saidBrandt. “But to her credit, she haslearned more in the two weeks or sowe have been practicing thananyone else on the team.”

Kendrick is a hired gun whoshould provide a nice scoring punchfor the Lady Pacers over the nexttwo seasons.

“Sarah [Kendrick] has her gunsloaded and has a shooter’smentality,” said Brandt. “She shootsthe ball well, is an excellentdefender, and rebounds well.”

THE FRONT COURTTwo transfers join three solid

returners to bolster the Lady Pacersfront court. Starters Allison Nold andJen Kennedy are back along withsophomore Katie Gebhardt. Joiningthe mix in 2002-03 are juniors EricaLarsen and Katie Mitchell.

Nold was third on the team inscoring at 11.0 points per game lastyear and has been labeled in thepast as the most underrated playerin the Peach Belt Conference. Inthree years, she is already on theschool’s top 10 lists for scoring (fifth),rebounds (sixth), assists (10th),three-point field goals made (eighth),games played (ninth), and minutesplayed (sixth).

“Allison is one of our mostconsistent players,” said Brandt.“She is a very good shooter, rebounds well, and plays verysmart.”

Kennedy was fourth in scoring(7.5 ppg) and second in rebounding

(5.2 rpg) in her first season with theLady Pacers. Starting 21 of 28games, Kennedy provided strong playin the paint last season and will belooked upon to repeat that this year.

“Jen is a little behind after herbroken toe injury,” said Brandt. “Butshe has the potential to be a goodleader this year. She is an aggressiverebounder and if she becomes patienton offense, she will factor into ouroffensive scheme more.”

Gebhardt, known as “Butta” toeveryone around the Lady Pacerprogram, is the only sophomore onthe team. She wasnot thrust into thefire as a freshman, appearing in 15games averaging1.7 points and 1.9rebounds percontest.

“Butta is hardworking and is avery solid all-around player,” saidBrandt. “She hasgood offensiveskills and workshard on defense.”

Larsen was atop junior college

player in California the past twoseasons. She helped lead SanJoaquin Delta College to theCalifornia State Junior College FinalFour and was named the team’smost valuable player in 2001-02.

“Erica is very smooth offensivelyand can score inside and out,” saidBrandt. “She will become a betterdefensive player and rebounder.”

The final piece to the puzzle isMitchell. The 6-0 post player will addpresence to the Lady Pacers in thepaint. Missing a true center over thepast few years has hurt the team onoccasions. But after nearlyaveraging a double double with 15.0points and 9.0 rebounds last seasonat Phoenix College, Mitchell could bethe missing link.

“Katie [Mitchell] has a very goodshooting touch,” said Brandt. “She isa smart player and will be a forceinside.”

Above: Cheers abound as the Lady Pacers watched the 2002 NCAA Division II Selection Show. USCA was selectedfor the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and earned a first round bye as the second seed.

Cheers, sighs of relief, and tearsof happiness abounded in room 235of the Business and EducationBuilding on the campus of USC Aikenon Sunday evening, March 3. TheLady Pacers had just learned of theirprogram’s first ever bid to the NCAADivision II Tournament.

Members of the 2001-02 LadyPacer basket-ball team, severalmembers ofthe media, andteam officialsgathered inthe room towatch a webcast of theNCAA Selec-tion Show live

from Rochester, Minnesota, site ofthe 2002 Elite Eight. As the pairingswere announced, USCA was re-vealed as the number two seed in theSouth Atlantic Regional to be playedin Mars Hill, NC on March 7-9.

During the regular season, the

Lady Pacers posted a school best 22-4 mark and with a 16-3 record inconference play, captured the school’sfirst Peach Belt Conference Women’sBasketball Banner since 1990-91.

Despite falling to upset mindedand eventual PBC Tournamentchampion Georgia College & StateUniversity, USCA entered the NCAATournament as a team to watch.

But disappointment struck againas the Lady Pacers ran into a NorthCarolina Central team that turned inits best shooting performance of theseason hitting on 60.9 percent of itsshots from the field.

However, the experience was oneto remember and have the LadyPacers hungry to return to postseasonplay in 2002-03.
