Tonight’s Starters SAL: LHP Dedgar Jimenez (8-1, 3.27 ERA) vs. WIL: RHP Andres Machado (2-6, 5.87 ERA) The Kansas City Royals signed then 17-year-old Andres Machado as an international free agent out of Venezuela on November 17, 2010. Machado spent his first two professional seasons in the Dominican Summer League before coming to the states for two years in the Appalachian League with the Burlington Royals. His career was progressing at a good pace before an injury slowed his momentum in 2015. Machado un- derwent Tommy John Surgery, costing him the entire season. He returned in 2016 and made 13 starts for the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League before starting his first year of full-season ball with Wilmington this April. Machado opened the campaign as a reliever, posting a 1-4 mark and a 4.15 ERA in 12 appearances out of the bullpen. The six-foot, 175-pound right-hander has plenty of experience in the rotation however, having started 29 of his 67 professional games. Machado took the rotation spot of 2014 first-round pick Foster Griffin, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on May 28. Last time out for Machado was on June 12 at Lynchburg where he had to eat innings. He worked six frames, allowed eight runs, seven earned on 13 hits. The Carabobo, Venezuela native throws a four-seamer, a two-seamer, slider and changeup. Left-hander Dedgar Jimenez makes the start for Salem to- night. The Carolina League All-Star was signed as an inter- national free agent on July 28, 2012 by Boston. Entering his fourth year in the system, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder spent last year between Low-A Greenville and Salem, going a combined 8-10 with a 5.20 ERA in 26 total starts. The southpaw is mak- ing his 12th start of the season and second against Wilming- ton. In his initial start against Wilmington back on May 2, he suffered the loss and was tagged for six earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work in a game the Blue Rocks would win 10-2. However, since that start, Jimenez has not lost a game, going 5-0 in his last seven starts with a sterling 1.37 ERA and holding opponents to a .218 batting average. The Venezuelan native features a 4-seam fastball, curveball, slider and changeup. Scott Blewett earned the win and spun six scoreless innings, allowed just two hits and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Offensively, eight different hitters picked up a hit with Anderson Miller leading the way with three hits, falling a home run shy of the cycle. The Rocks have now outscored their opponents 26-1 during an impressive 33.2 scoreless innings streak. SPOILER ALERT: In their last three games against Salem and Lynchburg, the Blue Crew have dominated the two teams vying for a First Half Northern Division title. Wilmington has posted three consecutive shutout wins during that span. In the last 27 innings of play, the Rocks have outscored the top two teams in the divi- sion 24-0 and pounded 39 total hits. In turn, the pitching has allowed just nine hits and have struck out 23 batters. POWER SURGE: Over the Blue Rocks’ first 26 games of the season the Blue Crew had hit just 11 home runs, the second-fewest in the Carolina League. But over the last 42 games Wilmington has blasted 33 more long balls. Chase Vallot has led the way, hitting six homers during Wilmington’s power surge, including the Rocks’ only two grand slams of the season. Anderson Miller has clubbed five of the homers over this stretch. Miller has seven on the season after hitting just three during the entire second half with Wilmington last year. Chris DeVito has four homers while Roman Collins and Brandon Downes have three homers each. Cody Jones and Nicky Lopez have also clobbered two. Travis Maezes and Kort Perterson have added another in the month-plus power surge. CHASING RECORDS: With the current 33.2 scoreless innings streak, the 2017 Blue Rocks pitching staff is not far from tying the franchise record set from June 7-12, 2009. Wilmington’s staff strung together 38 scoreless innings during that stretch. Coincidentally, like the streak this year, the record setting streak in 2009 started in a doubleheader against Lynchburg and also carried through a series against Salem before the streak was snapped at Winston-Salem. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 29 one-run games so far in 2017. No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 24 single-score affairs. Incredibly for Wilmington, the Rocks are now 15-14 in such contests, after having won 11 of the last 12. Wilmington has also played in seven extra innings affairs already in 2017-the second-most in the Carolina League. The Rocks are just 3-4 in those games not completed in regulation. ROCK STARS: The Blue Rocks had six players named to the 2017 Carolina League Northern Division All-Star team on Monday. Shortstop Nicky Lopez, out- fielder Anderson Miller and pitchers Foster Griffin, Cristian Castillo, Richard Lovelady, and Yunior Marte, have been named to represent the Northern Division. Lopez earned the nod as the team’s starting shortstop. The mid-summer classic will be held on Tuesday, April 20 at Hayley Toyota Field in Salem, VA, as the best play- ers from the Northern Division will play against the premier players in the Southern Division. The six members of the Blue Crew selected is the most since 2011 when Wilmington had five mid-season All-Stars. LOVING RICHARD: Richard Lovelady continues to dominate with another impressive outing on Tuesday night. The southpaw picked up his first win of the season after not allowing a hit or walk while striking out five batters in 3.1 innings of flawless work against Lynchburg. In 28.1 innings pitched this season, the Carolina League All-Star has only allowed two walks, 18 hits, and has struck out 35 batters for a ridiculous 17.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio and a 0.71 WHIP. Lovelady has not allowed a run since May 1, raising his scoreless innings streak to 18.2 and dropping his ERA down to 1.27. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: “Well three shutouts in a row, that’s pretty awesome. You don’t see that very often. You know how I feel about starting pitching. They set the tone every single day. Scott Blewett came out (Friday) and dominated from the get go; he was aggressive, came after them, made pitches when he needed too. Then Matt Tenuta was absolutely perfect. They are all feeding off each other, that’s the key. No one wants to be that guy to give up a run. They are out there competing. The offense is taking advantage of situations. We are getting key hits up and down the lineup. You look up and down the lineup and they are all hitting, driving in runs, doing a great job. Seven, eight, and nine contributing just like (Thursday night), that takes a big load off the other guys.”

The Salem Scoop

The Salem Red Sox are coming off one of their best season’s in franchise history a year ago. However, having the best overall record in the Carolina League and a prospect-laden roster wasn’t enough. The Red Sox finished 2016 with an impressive 87-52 record and won the first half of the Souther Division with a 43-26 record. Salem took on Myrtle Beach and was ousted in the semifinals in three games.

This year, the Red Sox are managed by second-year skipper Joe Oliver who returns after his successful first year. Like Wilmington’s skipper in Jamie Quirk, Oliver was a catcher and was drafted in the 1983 MLB Draft in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Reds team that defeated the powerful Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series. He went on to spend 13 seasons in the big with the Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Mariners, Pirates, Yankees and Red Sox. He played in nearly 1,100 games and posted a .247 batting average to go along with 102 homers and 476 RBI. After a 13-year hiatus from baseball, Oliver returned and became the manager of the Lowell Spinners in 2014. He spent two years with the Short-Season Class A affiliate and led the team to a composite 74-77 record. He was then promote to Salem in 2016.

The 2017 Salem squad has a handful of Boston’s top prospects. 19-year-old Roniel Raudes is the highest ranked prospect on the team, tabbed as the sixth-best prospect in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2016 and posted an 11-6 record with a solid 3.65 ERA in 24 starts in Low-A Greenville.

Offensively, the Sox have Josh Ockimey at first base. The slugging first baseman clubbed 18 home runs which was second-most on the farm while pacing the South Atlantic League in walks (88). He paced Greenville’s offense in multiple offensive categories including home runs, walks, games played and doubles. He enters the season as the No. 10 prospect.

Michael Chavis is ranked as the 11th-best prospect on the pipeline. He had a great start to the year hitting north of .350 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 15 games. However, a thumb injury derailed his season and was unable to play the majority of 2016.

Other prospects that have received attention by Baseball America that will be featured in Salem in 2017 is Gerson Bautista who has the best fastball in the system. Bautista spent time with the Lowell Spinners a year ago and averaged a strikeout per inning. Behind the plate, Austin Rei is con-sidered to be the best defensive catching prospect and gunned nearly 40% of would-be-base-stealers in Greenville last year.

Like Wilmington, Salem has a player on their team that has MLB blood-lines. Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny makes the jump from Low-A Greenville after hitting a respectable .277 in 105 games which earned him a selection on the South Atlantic All-Star team. Tate was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2015 out of Missouri State.

Along with the top prospects, Salem has 14 returners in 2017. Familiar faces for the Blue Crew are Matt Kent who etched his name in the Salem record books as the lefty tossed 156 innings last year which led the Carolina League and also set a new, single-season high. Another familiar hurler Wilmington will see is Yankory Pimentel who posted nine win and a 3.12 ERA in 32 appearances.

With the addition to Buies Creek and Down East, Salem has shifted to the Northern Division after playing in the Southern Division. Last season, the Blue Rocks and Red Sox battled 20 times in inter-division play with Salem taking the head-to-head match up 13-7. This year, the two foes will play within the Northern Division and meet an astounding 27 times.

Pitch Repertoire: Four-Seam Fastball, Two-Seam Fastball, Slider, ChangeupTHE BOOK ON ANDRES MACHADO: The Kansas City Royals signed then 17-year-old Andres Machado as an international free agent out of Venezuela on November 17, 2010. Machado spent his first two professional seasons in the Dominican Summer League before coming to the states for two years in the Appalachian League with the Burlington Royals. His career was progressing at a good pace before an injury slowed his momentum in 2015. Machado underwent Tommy John Surgery, costing him the entire season. He returned in 2016 and made 13 starts for the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League before starting his first year of full-season ball with Wilmington this April. Mach-ado opened the campaign as a reliever, posting a 1-4 mark and a 4.15 ERA in 12 appearances out of the bullpen. The six-foot, 175-pound right-hander has plenty of experience in the rotation however, having started 29 of his 67 professional games. Machado took the rotation spot of 2014 first-round pick Foster Griffin, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on May 29. The Carabobo Venezuela native throws a four-seamer, a two-seamer, slider and changeup.

LAST TIME OUT: Machado’s last outing was one where he had to eat innings because the bullpen was depleted. In turn, Machado worked six innings, allowed eight runs, seven earned on 13 hits in a losing effort on June 12 at Lynchburg.

ROAD WARRIOR: Machado has spent majority of his time on visiting team’s pitching mounds this year. The righty has made 11 appearances, including all three starts this season on the road. The converted started is 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in those 11 appearances away from Frawley Stadium. Tonight will be his first start at home and just fifth appearance of the season in the friendly confines of Frawley. At home, he is 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA.

BULLPEN TENURE: Machado started the season pitching out of the bullpen and even picked up his first professional save in the United States on April 16 against Potomac. It was his first save any-where since he was in the Dominican Summer League in 2012. Machado’s role varied as a reliever. He tossed three or more innings on three occasions, including two outings of 3.1 frames. He also worked one frame or less in four of his 12 appearances.

MACHADO ON DIFFERENCES OF STARTING VS. RELIEVING: “This transition is a little bit difficult because I started in the bullpen but now they moved me to the rotation. In spring training, I was looking to be a starter but they made me a reliever. I feel good though because I pitched as a starter the whole season last year in Idaho Falls. It’s different because we come in relief against just one or two hitters sometimes. Now I need to think of pitching in a very different style. When you start a game, you need to learn what the hitter is looking for. When you come in for relief for one hitter, you can throw a slider or something different and it works. As a starter, you have to face these hitters more than once. So you have to throw strike one, and you have to control your fastball to set other pitches up. It’s more of a process.”

BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON ANDRES: When asked what pitcher had the biggest impact on him, Machado did not hesitate even for a second. “I enjoy watching Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mari-ners,” Machado said. “He has very good stuff and he is a starter. I like him because he throws a lot of strikes, has great stuff and also because his from Venezuela.”

MACHADO ON TOMMY JOHN IN 2015: “It was Tommy John surgery and it is one year that you’re out and that you can’t get back. Last year, I was feeling better and I started, but now I actually feel good again.”

That’s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I’m out...It took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn’t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That’s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I’m out.... I know Brandon Phillips doesn’t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well.”

They said it: “I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements ... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There’s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn’t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There’s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There’s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here.”

2015 Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit .250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate.

They said it: “I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that’s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that’s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn’t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don’t think it would’ve been as successful as a game... I think that’s the reason why I’m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that’s what I pride myself on the most... I don’t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn’t a big stocky dude because I’m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long.”

They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season)“Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren’t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...Just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That’s everyone’s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible.”...“I actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I’m super excited. It’s a great group of guys here...I loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(On transition from catcher to first base.)...I absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body... Absolutely not, I’ve never done that before (on hitting for the cycle). I was just super happy to get the win and happy to contribute. (If cycle was in his mind after the triple) A little bit, but not much. I know (triples) are incredibly hard to get and I’m not a big triples guy. I was just happy to get it done early and didn’t have to worry about it. I’m mostly happy we got the win.”

I love playing baseball and I’m looking to that more than anything else and doing what I can to help the club win...I was lucky enough to go to Australia and play in the Australian Baseball League. I kind of got my lower half going, but I’m still honing it and trying to get more up the middle. It has allowed me to have a little more power than in the past...(On living in Australia) It was awesome. We got to play with big leagu-ers and that’s special just in itself. We got to see how they conduct themselves. Living in a new country was a lifetime experience...(Cultural shocks in Australia) They drive on the wrong side of the road and that took a little while to get used to. Navigating and little things here and there, like stores closing earlier was a little different, but I loved it...Last year really helped (on being in WIL for second season and being comfortable in CF at Frawley Stadium). (.981)-Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270)They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren’t or were going right, just know how to act....I think it’s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That’s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed....Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don’t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that’s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....On being rated #13 prospect “No I don’t think it adds any pressure. I don’t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don’t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team....I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He’s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.” ...I’ve never been this far east. It’s a new part of America I haven’t seen. I’ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven’t been this far east so I’m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer.”

Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity...At first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn’t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don’t get to do that so I took it all in...It goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you’re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There’s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we’ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I’m really looking forward to it.”

I don’t remember the initial impact or five seconds after it happened. The only thing I remember is walk-ing down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospi-tal and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn’t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip.”...(On getting back in the box): “It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it’s fine.”... “Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I’d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.”... “From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it’s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.”... “I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I’m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.”

They said it: “It was a huge, huge jump. The long season and bus rides. In college, our travel was much less, the bus rides weren’t nearly as long and we didn’t play nearly as many games. I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I’m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I’m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year ...On going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band play-ing so that’s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes....It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally...For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself...There’s no one specific player for me personally. I’m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they’re can’t miss TV.

I got two hours of sleep, took a flight to (Wilmington), got in at 12 and they put me in the lineup, which I was kind of surprised by. Everything ended up good. I met the guys, just getting used to the environment. It was a good first game...Pretty bummed I can’t play in (the South Atlantic League All-Star Game). Thorman told me do you want the bad news or the good news. He said, “Bad news you can’t play in the All-Star Game; good news is you are going up to Wilmington.” It’s alright, I guess it’s a three-day break now so I’m fine with it...I’m just trying to help the team win. I’m trying to contribute, do my part. Friday, I saw some better pitching than I saw in Low-A. Trying to get used to the environment and help this team win. It was awesome (that Lexington teammate Walker Sheller also debuted Friday). We were actually talking about it, we both got two hours of sleep. We both were like I wonder if we are going to play (in game the day they arrived). We both ended up playing and both did well. We are definitely pleased with that performance...It is great to have guys to know. Nicky Lopez, Chris DeVito, Nate Esposito, some of my best buddies in the organization. We were all in Burlington together last year, had a really good season so it’s great to come in here, know some guys and mesh with the team.”
