FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA -
THE GODFATHER OF
HOSPITALITY
Back in early 1970s Hollywood, Coppola
was the toast of the town, praised for
his masterful story telling skills and keen
directorial eye. By 1976, he had more
than half a dozen Academy Awards on his shelf.
Not being one to rest on his laurels, Coppola hea-
ded into the Philippine jungle, his family in tow,
and spent the next few years completing Apoca-
lypse Now.
SUCCESS IS A VERY PERSONAL THING
In the early 1980s, he visited Belize and promptly
fell in love with the beauty of the landscape. After
announcing that he wanted a place in the jungle
where he could write, his wife Eleanor found a re-
mote, run-down lodge on the island, which they
kept as a family home for many years. Blancane-
aux Lodge eventually became Coppola’s first hotel.
Blancaneaux Lodge began accepting guests in
1993. It was followed by four more luxury re-
sorts: the Turtle Inn, also in Belize, La Lancha in
Guatemala, Jardín Escondido in Buenos Aires,
and Palazzo Margherita in Italy.
All five Coppola resorts reflect the man him-
self. Partly because he personally supervised the
building and renovations on all of them. And
partly because all five served as family homes be-
fore opening their doors to the public. Palazzo
Margherita, however, is possibly the one closest to
Coppola’s heart. The 19th-century palazzo is lo-
cated in the small southern Italian town of Ber-
nalda, the birthplace of Coppola’s grandfather.
Coppola wanted a place that his children would
visit again and again. And in keeping with his
commitment to the family business, he invited the
entire Coppola clan to contribute design ideas.
“It has magical gardens,” Coppola says. “The fa-
mily has gathered in the magnificent salon on
many occasions – for celebrations, intimate teas
and film screenings. The rooms are palatial, with
frescos on the ceilings and walls. It has many mo-
dern touches, of course, yet the patina of history
is preserved.”
SUCCESS IS A VERY PERSONAL THING
The restaurant serves local delicacies, and the ho-
tel runs cooking classes focusing on the region’s
culinary traditions. But, Coppola says, what ma-
kes the difference is the charm and attitude of the
people who work there, most of whom are locals.
“They make such a huge effort and are excel-
lent. Their natural qualities are something that
cannot be taught. They have something real, and
that is quite beautiful.”

SUSANNE KAUFMANN’S
FAVOURITE ESCAPES
ON HER HOME
‚Growing up in Bregenzerwald, there were plenty
of opportunities to do all kinds of sports. I really
like to combine skiing with eating good food and
time to chill out. I regularly run in the forest, and
go ice-skating and mountain-biking, depending
on the season. We have exquisite restaurants here
such as the Adler Schwarzenberg and Schwanen
Bizau, where I love the Marillenknödel, dump-
lings made of curd and filled with apricot jam;
they are gorgeous.‘
ON HER HOTEL
‚I base Post Bezau on what makes me feel good.
This applies to everything from the espresso at
our bar to the sheets on the beds, the towels, the
food and overall service. It is a very personal ap-
proach. In the beginning the skincare and spa
were only available to hotel guests. When I met
Ingo Metzler, the cosmetics producer who lived
in the next village, it was the starting point for
the launch of my own collection in 2003. My in-
terest in traditional Chinese medicine also began
at that time.‘
ON DESIGN
‚Our minimal approach to the spa was a reaction
to the overload of Alpine knick-knaks that seem
to be the main attraction in places across the re-
gion. That concept has worked for decades, but it
didn‘t work for me anymore. I wanted to get
back to basics and nature. My brother Oskar Leo
is an architect and he designed my products,
along with Johannes Norlander. We recommend
our guests visit the Werkraum Bregenzerwald
building; it was built by Peter Zumthor and is
very impressive.‘
ON SKIING
‚Baumgarten, which is in Bezau - where I‘m from
- is really small and old-school. Close to Bezau
there‘s a lovely ski area called Mellau Damüls
with wonderful slopes and views of the western
Austrian Alps. Lech is very cool but I sometimes
prefer going with my family to the easy pistes in
Seiser Alm, Italy. Plus it has great restaurants. I
like Haglöfs and Peak Perfomance for ski clot-
hing, HEAD for skis and Fischer for ice skates.
You can find all these brands in the shops around
the slopes. Buy it where you use it is my advice.‘
ON TRAVEL
‚The safari lodges I‘ve visited in South Africa with
my husband were superb, such as Belmond Savute
Elephant Lodge in Botswana. It was a big adven-
ture. But my favourite places are Ellerman House
in Cape Town, Lizard Island on the Great Barrier
Reef, Das Stue in Berlin, Chiltern Firehouse in
London and Grand Hotel Timeo in Sicily. They
are all truly authentic and have outstanding ser-
vice. Next on my list is a trip to Copenhagen.‘
ON WHAT‘S NEW
‚We are about to launch a haircare range based on
the Alpine hop plant, which we have been wor-
king on with hairdresser Christoph Thoma. He
has also opened an avant-garde salon at the hotel.‘

Foto: Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
Das Fünf-Sterne-Luxusresort in Bad Ragaz ist ein
Ort der Inspiration, vielseitig und aufregend. Es ist
vor allem die unbändige Herzlichkeit jedes einzel-
nen Mitarbeiters, die neben ganzheitlichem Well-

In-
hier während seines Aufenthalts erwartet: Er findet hier Palmen, türkisblaues Was-
Maldives Maamunagau Resorts“ speisen Sie par excellence: „The Lighthouse“
ven. Idealerweise One-Way.

No news, no shoesDas Konzept des „Slow Life“ steht im Mittel-punkt von Sonevas Philosophie.

Hier will man einfach mit sei-ner Umwelt verschmelzen. ➨
Vorbildwirkung Unglaublich, aber
wahr: Als erste Republik weltweit

S P A S S I M S C H N E E
„ S A V O Y E R “ - V I V R E

Mix and MatchIm Haubenlokal „Le Cèpe“ in
