Adelboden - a childhood home from home The Welsh financier Grant Maunder has known and loved Adelboden since he was a child. His parents and grandparents also spent many holidays there. Today, the village in the Bernese Oberland is his second home - and that of his family and close friends. When he and his brother were offered the chance to purchase the “Grand Hotel Regina” in 2006, they didn’t hesi-tate. As Grant Maunder reflects: “We have close ties with Adelboden. Taking over the renovation-worthy establishment signified a unique opportunity for us.”

Swiss quality and British lifestyleThe two entrepreneurs modernised the historically important building, and entrusted Peter Silling, an architect specialising in interiors, with the interior design. The ageing grand hotel was transformed into the trendy mountain resort “The Cambrian”. Opened in 2007, “The Cambrian” serves up a harmonious blend of British lifestyle and Swiss quality, with the hotel’s interior design providing just one example of this unique fusion. Local materials including crushed shale, wood and stone complement one-off pieces and design elements from the United Kingdom, exuding a timeless, simple elegance and underscoring Grant Maunder & Partner’s distinctive personal touch. As Grant Maunder comments: “We seek to offer our guests an unforgettable stay and an experience which convinces down to the last detail - including the design. We choose much of the furniture, pictures and photographs ourselves.” The Cambrian’s special Welsh-Swiss ambience was developed in collaboration with the Momentum design studio.

Owner-managedAs “non-hoteliers”, Grant Maunder & Partner originally commissioned an American hotel group with the hotel’s management. In 2011, however, they decided to exert more influence over the running of the establishment, and appointed their own management. Says Maunder: “The Cambrian is close to our hearts, and we wanted to take a more active role and truly shape the soul of the hotel.” Today, the 4-star superior hotel is in the capable hands of managing director Anke Lock.

The bathrooms, some of which boast double basins in addition to a separate shower and bathtub, are adorned with elaborate mosaic tiling. Local delicacies at the restaurant - afternoon tea in the winter gardenOur menus feature a wide range of fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs and other valuable sources of natural proteins and wholesome carbohydrates. And fresh fish and healthy meat are a must, of course. We source our ingredients from selected suppliers in the region. But a healthy menu on its own isn’t enough. When it comes to taste, The Cambrian doesn’t make any compromises: it simply has to be excellent! The menu offers a selection of ‘sharing dishes’. This makes it easy to discover and share a wide variety of dishes together with your partner or friends. The wine list is characterised by an exquisite selection of Swiss wines which are frequently rarities abroad. Hotel guests and Adelboden’s residents alike wax lyrical about the breakfast buffet, with its wide selection of freshly-prepared hot and cold dishes. With its trendy furnishings, the light, airy restaurant offers stunning views of the Bernese Oberland alpine world through the ceiling-high French doors. In the summer months, the glass doors are opened, and guests are served in the hotel garden on the terrace. The view from the generously-sized winter garden and adjoining panoramic terrace covering 80 square metres is also bound to take your breath away. Our guests adore the British afternoon tea with scones, sandwiches and confectionary, not to mention the diverse range of appetisers.

The Axe Bar for a post billiard match tippleThe first cocktail in The Axe Bar (located just off the lobby on the ground floor) was poured in 2007. Open daily from midday to 11 p.m. for the hotel’s guests and other visitors, the 40-seat bar with its mix of whimsical Alpine décor and modern light installations is the ideal place to meet for après-ski cocktails, an aperitif or to enjoy a beer or two whilst taking in important sporting events on the wide-screen televisions. And it offers the perfect chance to get to know other guests over a glass of champagne.

For meetings and events of all typesEnjoying a stunning backdrop of Adelboden’s mountain peaks, The Cambrian Club Rooms, with their modern, stylish design, provide space for inspiring workshops, conferences and incentives. The vintage furniture, imported from England, and the numerous amusing decorative elements epitomise the very quintessence of British humour. A cosy “coffee corner” is conducive to stimulating discussions during break times over coffee, fresh fruit or a mouthwatering snack, while the large wooden table in the library adds a certain appeal to group tasks. The Club Rooms also offer an ideal setting for private occasions including weddings and birthday celebrations. Club Room 1 and Club Room 2, the two more intimate meeting spaces, seat between eight and twelve people, while, next door, our 102-square metre events room, Adelboden, accommodates up to 70 people. As well as treating delegates to the unique Alpine panorama of the Bernese Oberland, the large panoramic windows mean the light comes flooding in. Up to 140 people can meet or celebrate here when the spacious adjoining terrace is put into service.

Wellness overlooking the WildstrubelThe 800-square metre spa area extends over two floors. The view of the Wildstrubel from the heated outdoor swimming pool (32 °C) is unique, while the mountains appear close enough to touch from the whirlpool loungers. A waterfall splashes in the indoor pool, where guests can relax in pleasant temperatures of 28 °C. The sauna facility, which includes a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, a rain shower and Kneipp footbaths, is embellished with Bisazza mosaics. Couples are welcome to use the private spa. Beauty specialists give massages and treatments in five treatment rooms. They use products which satisfy the most discerning of requirements: the masseurs rely on natural products from Alpienne, while the beauticians recommend treatments by Dermalogica. Free weights and endurance training on cardio machines by Technogym are both possible in our well-equipped gym. Thanks to its stunning view of the Alps, “The Times” included The Cambrian in its top 10 list of the world’s most beautiful outdoor pools. The Swiss newspaper “Sonntagszeitung” ranks The Cambrian among Switzerland’s premium wellness hotels.

Tradition and modernity, culture and nature The Cambrian is situated at the heart of the renowned tourist resort Adelboden, which lies at 1,350 metres above sea level. A year-round destination, the village epitomises the typical Bernese Oberland lifestyle. All restaurants, bars, shops and a cinema can be conveniently reached on foot from The Cambrian. The mild climate guarantees pleasantly warm summers and clear autumn and winter days. Each year, around 200,000 tourists visit the municipality, which numbers 3,500 residents. Here, particular importance is attached to the connection between tradition and modernity. This is demonstrated, for example, by the lovingly restored 600 year-old village church with frescoes by Augusto Giacometti, the “Alte Taverne” cultural centre, Adelboden’s local heritage museum or a traditional woodcarver’s workshop. The British connection with Adelboden dates back to 1903, when Sir Henry Lunn travelled to the Bernese Oberland with a British ski group. Several of the hotel names bear witness to the British influence, and Adelboden even housed an English-speaking church for many years. Guests from the United Kingdom remain important to Adelboden’s tourist industry to this day. At The Cambrian, which is owned by the Welsh Maunder brothers, they occupy second place in the nation rankings, behind Switzerland and before guests from Germany, the USA, Asia and Saudi Arabia.

Winter fun on 210 kilometres of slopes Thanks to its altitude, the long tradition of winter sports and the diverse ski slopes, the Adelboden-Frutigen holiday destination is one of Switzerland’s top 3 ski resorts. 210 kilometres of slopes and 40 kilometres of cross-country trails guarantee skiing and cross-country pleasure, while the skiing areas of Tschentenalp, Engstligenalp and Chuenisbärgli are connected by a system of 72 lifts. Besides skiing, other very popular winter activities include snowboarding, ice skating, sledging, Nordic walking and snow hiking. Younger guests can enjoy a varied programme offered by the ski school’s “Kiddieland”.

Adelboden has made a name for itself as the host of the annual International Ski Federation World Cup race. The giant slalom and slalom runs on the Chuenisbärgli are considered the most challenging in the world. Each January, the two-day skiing spectacle attracts up to 40,000 visitors. For guests of The Cambrian, all winter activities are just a stone’s throw away. The nearest ski lift is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Regular free shuttle buses

transport sun- and snow-seekers to other lifts. To avoid long waiting times, the reception team issues ski passes directly at the hotel.

Wide variety of summer activitiesIn July 2005, Adelboden was declared Switzerland’s first Alpine wellness holiday destination by the Alpine Wellness International GmbH. Adelboden also has much to offer those in search of tranquillity, wellness fans, sporting enthusiasts and families. Over 300 kilometres of hiking trails, numerous mountain bike and climbing routes, GPS tours, Nordic walking trails, the “Climbing Tower Silleren” and the “Scooterland” with seven different marked slopes are just a few examples. Mountain railways transport visitors to alpine paths, mountain restaurants, huts and cheese dairies. The 600 metre-high Engstligen waterfalls are also well worth a visit. The power of the water can be experienced up close and personal from the Choleren gorge, the Pochtenkessel or Adelboden’s mineral and medicinal spring. The protected flood plains are rightly prized as the natural jewel in the region’s crown: the Engstligenalp, an alpine alluvial plain, the Hornbrügg plain at the end of the Gilbach valley and the Lochweid flood plain at the far end of the Tschenten valley.
