Riders sprint through downtown in last year's Edwardsville Criterium.
Bike racing is coming back
By ANN NICCUM
Bicycle riders will take over downtown on
Aug. 6 and 7 when the Edwardsville Rotary
Club hosts its second Edwardsville Criterium
event.A criterium is a bicycle race on a short
course, often in a city setting and determined
by a number of laps.
SJ Morrison, a Rotarian and director of the
Criterium, said the organization started the
event last year as a fundraiser and as some-
thing all in the community could enjoy.
The events will be similar to those of last
year. The race track will follow the same
course through downtown, a 0.7-mile figure
8 along Main, St. Louis, East Vandalia, South
Benton, Ramey and Coventry streets.
All races start and finish on Main Street near
the courthouse.
The schedule is similar, too. The weekend
will begin with a kickoff event on Saturday
night, followed by races on Sunday.
The Saturday party will feature live music
by bands including the Well Hungarians, a
carb-loaded dinner and beer and wine sales
from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday at City
Park. Then, the races will then begin on Sunday.
There will be eight races, each accommodat-
ing a different level of cyclist, from the kids to
the professionals. Races will run from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m.
Morrison said the club hopes the event will
draw even more people this year. He said there
are opportunities for everyone to support the
event, including participating, volunteering,
sponsoring or spectating.
Last year, attendance estimates were 200
cyclists, 100 children in four kid’s races, 50
business sponsors, 1,000 spectators at the con-
cert and race and 200 volunteers. Racers came
from Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana and
West Virginia.
Morrison said the goal is to double the num-
ber of racers. He said to increase participation,
the club sent out more flyers than last year, to
5,000 racers in eight states. It increased adver-
tising and moved the date within the normal
race season.

Metro East Lutheran and Father
McGivney introduce new leaders
Mike Palmer wants to get new
Catholic school up and running
By BILL TUCKER
Mike Palmer has been on board with the
Father McGivney Catholic High School
project since day one.
Now, it's official.
The FMCHS Board of Directors
announced Monday that Palmer, who has
spent 32 years in Catholic education, has
been hired as the school's new principal.
The announcement comes almost two
months after the school decided to forge
ahead with its development and use
St. John Neumann Catholic School in
Maryville as its starting point.
Palmer is currently the principal at
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in
Collinsville. From 1996 to 2003, he was a
teacher and dean of students at Gibault
Catholic High School in Waterloo.
Board President Doug Villhard said in a
press release that Palmer's local ties make
him the perfect choice for the position.
"It is fantastic to have
someone who already
knows the community,
lives here and knows
all the area Catholic
grade school princi-
pals," Villhard said.
"When we announced
this exciting project
several years ago, Mike
was the first person to
call me. We talked for
over an hour about how much the area
needs this school, and he volunteered to
chair our curriculum committee."
Palmer received a bachelor's degree
in political science and history from
McKendree College and a master's degree
in historical studies from SIUE. He holds
Illinois teaching and administrative cer-
tificates.

Curtis Wudtke takes over as
building project continues
Palmer
By JULIA BIGGS
Metro East Lutheran High School has
new leadership. Curtis Wudtke began as
the new executive director and principal
on July 1.
Wudtke, pronounced “wood-key,” is
replacing Dan Kostencki, who retired in
May after serving 10 years as principal.
“Actually this is a homecoming for me,"
Wudtke said. "I grew up in Collinsville
and am an alumni of Metro East Lutheran
High School.”
Wudtke returns to lead the school with
14 years of administrative experience. He
spent six years teaching at Lutheran High
School in Sheboygan, Wis. During his
last year in Wisconsin, he also served as
interim administrator.
He served for four years at Orlando
Lutheran Academy in Orlando, Fla., before
leaving to take the lead role in starting
a new Lutheran High
School in Centralia,
where he served eight
years.“God has a sense of
humor," he said. "He
moves me around a lit-
tle bit every now and
then."Having known
Kostencki for several
years, Wudtke said he was honored to fol-
low him in leading Metro East Lutheran.
“It’s an exciting time for us," he said.
"We have a lot of positive things hap-
pening. I’ve been really pleased to meet
the excellent team of educators and staff
members we have in place.”
The school is currently in the midst of
a major building project which should be
completed in October or November.

Daylilies and waterfalls
result in awards for six
By BILL TUCKER
The daylilies, the waterfalls and
the hanging baskets all played roles
in helping six individuals earn
G.L.E.N. Awards.
Glen Carbon's Gardening,
Landscaping and Enhancing Nature
(G.L.E.N.) Committee announced
the class of 2011 at Tuesday's village
board meeting.
Committee member Cathy Hicks
discussed how the award winners
are selected and gave brief descrip-
tions of each property.
"Every year, we ask for nomina-
tions from the community so the
homeowners are nominated. From
these nominations, we plan a day,
usually the end of June, and we go
around to all of these homes and
we take pictures and we judge them
with a numerical judging scale and
then meet and make our determina-
tion," Hicks said.
Wendi Maertz, 126 East Willow
Bend, was the first award-winner
recognized at the meeting.
