Introduction UniversityofWisconsin-StevensPointundergraduatestudentsCourtneyAdair,ChristineKuhn,RyanMiller,PatrickOtero,andChrisRadadevelopedthisplanasapartoftheirInterpretiveMediacourse.ThisplanisbeingdevelopedfortheUpperMidwestEnvironmentalServicesCenter,orUMESC,locatedinLacrosse,WI.TheUMESCisaresearchcenterfortheUnitedStatesGeologicSurvey,orUSGS.TheUMESCsiteislocatedonthebackwatersoftheMississippiRiver.Thesitehasavarietyofnaturalhabitats,includingprairies,riverbackwaters,anoaksavanna,andforests.Onthesite,thereisatrailsystemandanoutdoorlearningcenter.Thetrailsystemandoutdoorlearningcenterhavesomeinterpretivemediaonthem,butcanbedevelopedmuchfurther.ThisplanisbeingdevelopedtoupdatesomeexistinginterpretivemediaonthesiteandtodevelopnewmediatoenhancetheeducationalopportunitiesattheUMESC.

Ourmediaplansarebasedoffofanorganizedtrianglethatasks3questionsthatwillunifyourconceptualplanforoursite:TheWhy?(ourmissionforthesite),theWho?(whoarethevisitors,whatdotheyhopetogain),andtheWhat?(thesiteanditsaspirations).Thesethreecomponentswillallowourteamtodevelopamediaplanthatwillstimulateourvisitor’semotionally,intellectuallyandbehaviorallytoactivelyengageintheexperiencethattheUpperMidwestEnvironmentalScienceCenterwantstoprovideforthepublic.WehopetocatalyzetheinvolvementofthevisitorusingtheUpperMidwestEnvironmentalCentercombinedwiththedevelopedmediaasachannelforrealizationthattheenvironmentisanintricatepartofthepublic’slife.

Planning Triangle continuedWhy? Mission: Weareusingthispartofthetriangletodiscovertheintentionsofourchosenorganization,andthereasonthatitexists.Questionssuchas:Whoarewe?(referringtoourteamandtheorganization),whatdowedo?,whodowedoitfor?,andwhydowedoit?,areallquestionsthatthissectionofthetrianglerepresent.MeetingwiththeUSGScenteranddiscoveringthequalitiesandcomponentsofthemwillhelpformthesequestions.

Who? Visitor:

Next,isthesectionforwhichthefacilityworkswith,thepublic.Understandingthevisitor’sneedsandwantswhenvisitingtheUMESCandwhattheyhopetoexperienceoraccomplishwillhelpthefacilitytogainaccesstohowwecanconformtotheiranticipatedoutcomes.Thevisitorisavitalcomponentinthetriangleaswellasforthewell-beingandstabilityforthefacility.

What? The Site:

TheUMESCisthemediumbywhichthevisitorcanmaketheiremotional,intellectualandbehavioralconnectionstotheirenvironment.Withtherightcomponentstoaidthemintheownpersonalenlightenmentwiththemselvesandtheirsurroundings,thevarioussitesatthefacilitywillfacilitatetheseconnectionswiththeuseofmediaandconnectedness.Wewillintegrateourownknowledgeintothesesitestoaccomplishthisgoal.

Thesethreecomponents,thewhy,whoandwhatwillformaconceptualplanthatwillhopefullybeusedattheenvironmentalcentertobestowtheknowledgeofthenaturalworldtothepublic,andstimulatemore people to act in regards to it.

USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center (UMESC) Mission Oursciencecommunicationphilosophyistobetterinformthelocalandregionalpublicof USGSscienceprograms,toprovidehands-onscienceopportunitiesforadiversityofyouth, andtoengagetheCenterasastrongpartnerinthecommunity

Purpose Thepurposeofthismediaprojectistocreateaseriesofvisualmediathatwillenhancethe educationalresourcesalreadyinplaceatthefacilities.TheUMESCalreadyhasinexistenceafront lobbyvisitorcenterarea,atrailsystem,OutdoorClassroom,andaseriesofpre-settoursforstudent andcivicgroups.OurmaingoalsaretoenhancethetrailsystemandOutdoorClassroombycreating aseriesofunifiedtrailsignsandtrailheadkiosksforeachecosystemthatthetrailpassesthroughas wellasbyimplementingmorehands-onactivitiesatthesesites.

Audience Thecurrentaudiencethatattendsthissiteincludesawidediversityofvisitors,fromKindergartento99yearolds,includingfamilies,politicians,andprofessionals.Peakvisitationisspringthroughfall.TheprimarysourceofinterestatthissiteislearningabouttheenvironmentandtheMississippiRiver.Theclienthasexpressedinterestintargetingteachers,students,andfamiliesfortheoutdoorclassroomandtrailnetworkalreadyestablishedontheproperty(Hines,2012).Thisfacilityusesavarietyofsciencetechniquestoconductandimplementresearchpracticestorestoreandprotectecosystemswhichwillultimatelyimprovehumanqualityoflife(UMESC,2012).

Asof2010thepopulationofLaCrosseCountywas114,638.Amajorityofthispopulation(62%)arefamilyhouseholdswithchildrenbeingunder18yearsold(30%).Theaveragefamilysizeisthree.Themajorityofthispopulation(32%)hasahighschooldegreeorhassomecollegeexperiencewithnodegree(22%).Thepopulationenrolledinschoolhasthehighestdensitiesincollegeorgraduatestudents(38%),elementarystudentsgrades1-8(35%),andhighschoolstudents(18%).Kindergartenandpreschoolarethelowestdemographic(4%)(2012,Census).

Asof2000thepopulationforthecityofLaCrossewas51,638,ofthistherewere10,787children.Thecitycensushadmanysimilaritieswiththecountycensuswhichincludedamajorityofthispopulationhavingahighschooldegree(32%)orsomecollegeexperiencewithoutattainingadegree(23%).SimilartothecountycensusthecityofLaCrossepopulationhasahighdegreeofcollegeorgraduatestudents(56%),elementarystudents(23%),andhighschoolstudents(13%).Asmallpercentageofthepopulation(16%)isunder18yearsold(2012,Census).

PotentialaudiencesincludecollegestudentsatthelocalUniversityofWisconsin-LaCrosseandhighschoolstudentsattheCentralHighSchoolwhichmakeupalargedemographicinthecountyandcityofLaCrosse(2012,Census).Thissitecouldprovidethesedemographicswithclassroomapplicationsaswellasdemonstratefuturejobpossibilitiesinthefieldofscienceandresearch.

ResourcesSite Resources - Natural

Sand Prairie Thissectionofsandprairiehabitatislocatedinfrontofthebuildingandincludes:awalkingtrail(0.10Mile),kiosk,andsomeplantidentificationsignage.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacementplantidentificationonthetrailandthereplacementofcurrentsignageonthekiosk.Thisareaistheprimarypointformanygroupsvisitingandcouldpotentiallybeusedasthestartingpointforatheme/puzzlethroughoutthetrails.

Savanna Prairie Thesectionofsavannaprairiehabitatislocatedbehindthemainbuildingandincludes:awalkingtrail(0.10Mile)andsomeexistingplantidentificationsignage.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacementplantidentificationonthetrail.Itwasindicatedthatthisareaneededsomeformofadditionalsignagetoencouragemovementthroughtheareaandpotentiallyatrailheader.

Oak Savanna Thesectionofoaksavannahabitatislocatedbehindthemainbuildingandincludes:awalkingtrail(0.13Mile)andsomeexistingplantidentificationsignage.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacementplantidentificationonthetrail.Itwasindicatedthatthisareaneededsomeformofadditionalsignagetoencouragemovementthroughtheareaandpotentiallyatrailheaderaswell.

Floodplain Forest Thesectionoffloodplainforesthabitatislocateddirectlybehindthemainbuildingandincludes:awalkingtrail(0.15Mile),kiosk,andsomeexistingplantsignage.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacementplantidentificationsignsonthetrailandkiosksignage replacement.

Backwater River Thesectionofbackwaterriverhabitatislocatedbehindthemainbuilding.IthasanOutdoorClassroomonalong,woodendock.TheOutdoorClassroomcontains:learningstationsconsistingofboxesfilledwitheducationalmaterialsandafloatingareautilizedinwatersamplingforeducationalpurposes.Theareasharesakioskwiththefloodplainforestarea.Thereissomeexistingsignageintheareaaroundthedock.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludenewsignagefortheinsidelidoftheeducationalboxes,replacementofexistingsignagearoundthearea,andalso a kiosk signage replacement.

Site Resources - Main BuildingFoyer Displays Afoyerislocatedimmediatelyuponenteringthebuildingandcontainsmanydisplaysthatshowtheinteractionbetweenscientificresearchandunderstandingthenaturalworld.Thesedisplayscontainvastamountsofinterpretivemediainvaryingformsincluding,butnotlimitedto:posters,stickers,pamphlets,paintings,handouts,anddisplays.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacingcurrentsignageanddisplaysandnewsignage.

Amphibians/Reptiles Themainbuildingcontainsamphibiansandreptilesyearround,includingtheUpperMidwestEnvironmentalSciencesCentermascot.Nosignagewaspresentatthetimeofthevisit.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludenewsignage.

Rearing Area Thisrearingareaisusedtoraiseandstorefreshwaterfish.ItcontainsmanynativefishtotheMidwest,fishagesvaryfromroeto17yearoldlakesturgeon.Primarysignageconsistsofwarningstovisitorsaboutconductandcontamination,alsofishidentificationsignage.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacingcurrentsignageandnewsignage.

Project Resources continuedInvasive and Exotic Species Area Thisarea,sealedofffromtherestofthewatersupply,isusedforexperimentsandtestingoninvasiveandexoticspecies.Theareacontainscarpandotherinvasivespecies.Primarysignageconsistsofconductandcontaminationwarnings.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludereplacing current signage and new signage.

Conference Room Thisareaislocatedinthemainbuilding.Itiscurrentlyutilizedforvaryingactivitiesincludingmeetings,speakers,andlargepresentations.Thismainentryareacontainsalargeemptyalcove.Potentialneworreplacementinterpretivemediaforthisareawouldincludenewsignageforthealcove.

TheUSGSUpperMidwestEnvironmentalScienceCenterutilizesitsresearchintoecologicaldiversehabitatstoshowpeopletheimportanceofthenaturalenvironmenttoMidwesternsociety.

Prairiesprovideavarietyofimportantecologicalcharacteristicswhichincludefoodfor manyspeciesofbirdsandsmallmammalsaswellasfoodandmedicineforhumans.

2. Oak Savanna

Theoaksavannaisahighlydiminishedecosystemthatconnectsprairieandforest environmentsprovidingbountifulopportunitiesforfoodandshelterforanimals,anda uniquemixtureofdifferentplantspecies.

3.FloodplainForest

Thefloodplainsshelterandembracemanyspeciesthatdependonitsaquaticand terrestrialvegetation,andprovidesprotectionagainstthethreatoffloodsandwater table contamination.

4.OutdoorClassroom/Dock

Theoutdoorclassroom/dockoffersaglimpseintotheaquaticworld;backwaterareas containmanydifferentaquatic,amphibious,andterrestrialspeciesduetotheshelter andforageprovided.

Conceptual Media Designs Environmental Interpretive Trails (Created by Ryan Miller) Purpose: Thispamphletwillinformvisitorsaboutthetrailsystemonsite.Itwillprovide assistancewithnavigationandhelpprovideatake-homemessage.Thepamphletwill alsoprovideafunscavengerhuntactivityforchildren.

Description: Thispamphletistheprimaryunifyingpiecethattiestheindividualtrailsintoone completesystem.Theintendeddistributionsitesforthispamphletiswherevisitorsare greetedoratthesandprairiekiosk.Thepamphletcontainsa“USGSJuniorScientist” scavengerhuntareathatisusedforacquiringrubbingsfromtrailsignsoneachtrail. Thefrontpagewillcontainamodifiedlogofortheeducationalseries,andfonts usedthroughoutthesystem.Thetwofoldoutswiththefrontpagewillcontainanup datedmapofthesiteandtrailsalongwithinfo,hours,andacknowledgments. Theinteriorofthepamphletwillcontaintheloopthatwillbeusedtotrackprogress throughthetrailsystem.This“loop”willbedividedinto5sections(onepertrail) usedfortherubbings.Thecolorationofeachareawillmatchthenewcolorsofthe trailmapandwillbeusedthroughouttocontinueunity.Eachofthetrailswillhavetwo locationswhererubbingsareprovided,thesearetoberaisedcirclesapproximately2 inchesindiameterwithafittingimageforthetrailcutintothem.

Objectives: Intellectual:Visitorswillenjoyanincreasedawarenessofallthelocationsoftrails. Emotional:Visitorswillfeelsecureinlocationanddirectionwhichwillincrease enjoyment. Behavioral:Visitorswillcontinueandfinishallofthetrails.

Sand Prairie Panels (Created by Christine Kuhn) Sand Prairies: An Abundance of Life Purpose: Thispanelwilldrawthevisitor’sattentiontothevarietyoflifethatexistswithin asandprairieandgenerallygoesoverlooked.Itwillshowasmallsampleofthe differenttypesofplantsandanimalscommonlyseen.

Description: Thispanelwillbeapproximately4’X3’(whichistheprintingsizethatcan beaccommodatedatthefacilities)andwilltakeupthespaceononesideofthekiosk panelalreadyinexistenceonthesite.ThePanelwillshowascenefromasandprairie withmagnifiedplantsandanimalsthatcanpossiblybeseenintheprairie.Eachplant oranimalwillhaveasmalltextboxthatgivessomeinformationaboutthespecies. Alargertextboxbeneaththetitlewillgivemoregeneralinformationaboutsandprairie floraandfaunaingeneralaswellasageneraldescriptionofthehabitat.Eachtextbox fortheimagepopoutswillbeslightlyopaquewiththeplantoranimalpartiallyover theboxsothatthetextwrapsaroundthepicture.Therubbingwillbelocatedinthe bottomrightcorner.

Objectives: Intellectual:Visitorswilllearnthatthereisanabundanceoflifethatcanbefound withinaprairie. Emotional:Visitorswillbefascinatedbytheamountofanimalsthatcanbefoundin suchasimplelookinghabitat. Fire! Fire! Fire! Purpose: Thispanelwillshowvisitorstheimportanceofdisturbancetoprairiehabitats andtheconnectionbetweendisturbanceanddiversity.

Description: Thispanelwillbe2’X1’insizeandwillbelocatedontheoppositesideofthe kioskalongsideotherpre-existingpanels.Thepanelwilldiscusstheimportance offireasadisturbancethathelpsmaintainahealthyprairiehabitat.The backgroundimagewillbeofaprairieonfire.Threelargepictureswillbeplaced overthebackground,theywillcontainasequenceofeventsshowingaprescribed burnandhowitlooksbeforeandaftertheburn.Therewillbeatextboxgrouped withthepicturelocatedjustbeloweachone.Thepicturesandtextboxeswill haveaunifiedstroke thatframesthembothtoconnectthemvisuallytogether. Thetextboxitselfwillbefilledwithaslightlyopaquecolortobedetermined. Beneaththetitlewillbeatextboxwithnofillthatbrieflydiscussesthe importanceofdisturbance.Inthewhitespacebetweentheotherpictureswillbe othersmall,non-filledtextboxesthataddlittlebits ofinformationaboutthetopicaswell.Therubbingwillbeplacedinthebottom rightcorneraswell.

Description: Thepanelwillhaveaunifiedheaderalongwithalloftheotherpanelsbeing puttogetherforthisproject.ThispanelwillhaveapictureofaBurrOakinthe background.Itwillhavetextboxesabouthowoaksavannaswereformed,whattheir importanceis,andwhythereismuchlessofthem.Itwillalsohaveabeforeandafter pictureofareasintheMidwestthathadpreviouslybeenoaksavannahabitatversus currentoaksavannahabitat.Itwillbelocatedasanindependantsignonthetrail.

Objectives: Intellectual:Visitorswilllearnthatcurrentlytheamountofoaksavannaacreageinthe upperMidwestregionisaminisculefractionfromwhatitwasinpre-settlement times,andwhythelossofoaksavannashasoccurred.
