MEDIA TECHNIQUES – RADIO (ET283)

IntroductionThis comprehensive course offers participants the opportunity to

gain the key practical skills and experience needed to work in the

radio and wider media sector. It’s the only full-time radio course in

Ireland to have won 4 PPI National Radio awards. Participants will

receive a comprehensive grounding in: media background studies,

researching and recording information, radio journalism techniques,

radio studio production, commercial radio production and radio

station operations. They will learn how to research, plan and pitch

programme ideas for particular target audiences and bring those

ideas to fruition. The learning outcomes are firmly focused on

enabling participants to secure sustainable employment in the radio

broadcast sector.

What you’ll study – Course Modules:• Induction - the planned outcomes and conditions attached to attendance

on the course; good safety, health and hygiene practices; the basic principles

involved in environmental issues; and the meaning of equal opportunities.

• Media Industry Organisation, Regulation and Practice* - investigate

the organisation, regulation and working practices within the media sector

in order to gain an understanding of their modus operandi, main legal

constraints, professional practices and health and safety practices.

• Researching, Recording and Presenting Information* - use a variety

of research methods to gather information from primary and secondary

sources and present the information using suitable formats.

• Radio Journalism Techniques* - plan, research, organise and produce

news bulletins, packages and journalistic items for radio.

• Radio Studio Production* - produce radio items using appropriate

equipment and standard procedures. Display a broad understanding

of how the media industry operates, with particular reference to radio

broadcasting roles, radio production roles, how to pitch ideas and how to

apply for various broadcasting funding schemes.

• Commercial Radio Production* - plan, record, edit and produce a

variety of commercial radio items; research, devise and agree a design

brief for a radio item; and draft a production budget and produce the

documentation to accompany an item.

• Freelance Employment Techniques* - research the job roles

and freelance opportunities available locally and nationally, gain an

understanding of what personal and business skills are required to be a

successful freelance media professional, and create personal business

strategies to gain freelance employment.

• Understanding Broadcast Audiences* - describe the major role that

audiences play in determining the scheduling of programmes in various

media, carry out research into audience classifications, and research data

bodies in order to gain an insight into the scheduling of programmes.

• Career planning and job seeking skills - plan and achieve realistic

employment and career goals.

• In Company - work independently, while under general supervision, in an organisation or specific vocational context related to radio broadcasting and carry out vocationally related radio broadcasting tasks over a period of time.

Certification. • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Media Techniques (Radio Studio

Production). To achieve this award the participants must successfully complete assessments in each of the 7 assessed modules.

Course Delivery Methods.A combination of training methods is used to deliver this course. These include instructions, presentations, demonstrations, supervised practice, practical work training, discussion groups, role plays, and giving and receiving feedback. Participants are required to actively participate in the learning process and to engage in course work outside of normal course hours. They must complete a number of written exercises and practical assignments throughout the course and keep up-to-date records of their progress. A number of methods are used to assess the participants’ progress and for certification purposes. These include practical assignments, theory exams, practical exams, project work, portfolios, learner records and skills demonstrations.

Entry Requirements. Do you meet the following Criteria?• Reached the statutory school leaving age.• Leaving Certificate standard of education or equivalent. • A proven aptitude and interest in written and spoken English.• Knowledge and interest in media, radio, news, current affairs, music,

etc.• Ability to work effectively within a team.• Aptitude for and an interest in the science of sound and audio

technology.• An appreciation of the demands and work patterns of a busy radio

station newsroom and programme production unit.• A clear speaking voice is desirable. • Previous experience in the media industries is an advantage but not

essential.• Competence in Irish or another European language is desirable.

Typical Employment Opportunities.Graduates from the course pursue jobs in radio stations, independent production companies, print journalism, online media and related industries. There are a wide variety of jobs open to them. These include Broadcast Assistant, Researcher, News Journalist, Sports Journalist, Commercial Producer, Sound Engineer, Commercial Voice-over, Programme Producer and Programme Presenter. Typically, course graduates seek internship and junior positions to build on their experience and further their careers. Former graduates of this course work at the BBC, RTE, Communicorp, ITV Radio, Independent News and Media, Thomas Crosbie Holdings, the Independent Local Radio sector, and a host of other on-line and media production companies.
