GOODWINS THEORY

• 1. the music video demonstrates genre characteristics • 2.there is relationships between the lyrics and the visuals • 3.the demands of the record labels will include the need for lots of close ups • 4there are frequent references of notion looking • 5. there is often intertexual references • Whether the video is primarily performance based, concept based or narrative

based

Haim- If I could change your mind

‘If I could change your mind’ is a song written and sung by three young American girls.

The song was released in 2013 and represents the girls abilities to dance and sing and how they all are capable to play instruments

Each girls within the band can play and instrument with two of them previously being in a pop band called ‘The Valli Girls’

Characteristics• Goodwins theory states that each music video characteristics will fit in with their specific

genre, within Haims ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’ video there are many characteristics that can be seen to show the convections of a typical indie music video

The ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’ video is mainly performance based, throughout the video they put on a type of ‘show’ where throughout you can see them singing and dancing with their instruments

Another convection that can be seen to be going on throughout the music video is the dim lighting and shadows, this is to be seen in many indie videos where they want to create the dark effect to make you feel as to what is going on throughout the performance

Page 5: Media video analysis

Relationship between lyrics and visual ‘Now I won't go I won't run away this time But all I wanna know’

‘If I could change your mind I would hit the ground running It took time to realize And I never saw it coming Forgive my lying eyes Gonna give you all or nothing If I could change your mind I could make you mine, make you mine’

Haims Video is a performance based visual, the lyrics do not have much connection to the visual on screen but, the setting is dark and deep set like the lyrics in which they hold a deep meaning on changing somebodies mind that they may be in love with or had of been in love with.

So in a sense you can say that the video holds a slight indication to the relationship between what meaning the ‘deep’ lyrics hold and what they are seeing on screen

Close ups and motifs Throughout Haims ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’ video there are many different close up but they are shown in a different light, they focus on one face but have the other two silhouettes in the outline of the video, this is challenging common convections of what is known as the ‘typical’ close up The motif that can be seen throughout

their video is their dancing, they dance in a certain uncommon kind of way to create a sense of individuality throughout their video. They seem to have a certain style when singing and dancing which is very serious faces and very relaxed dancing to portray their style

Page 7: Media video analysis

Performance based• Haims video is very performance based, many key indications to this is the

fact that they look into the camera whilst singing and dancing and that their music video doesn’t tell a story along with the lyrics instead they are performing like they are at a show.

• This could be seen to be challenging convections as often many music videos tell a narrative performance story but Haim chose to take a different path in which it is deamed as harder to make a video out of something which hasn’t got a story behind it.

Little Comets- Joanna

The little comets are an English Indie rock band many people have been said to describe them as playing ‘Kitchen sink indie’ music, they focus on their independent sound of their music to make it sound like no other.

The song ‘Joanna’ is about women who they have been with in a one night stand and how they deal with it after and their emotions and feeling towards the woman that sometimes they treat wrong.

Page 9: Media video analysis

Characteristics• The characteristics of Little Coments video ‘Joanna’ indicates the classic

convections that are portrayed within an indie music video

• ‘Joanna’ Is narrative based where the video along with the song tells a story, the story is of different woman and how he has treated the woman when he has taken them home and home they are acting after they have been with him, again through out the video they use very deep colours and dark dingy lighting

Page 10: Media video analysis

Relationship between lyrics and visual

the lyrics hold connection in a classic convection way in which is said in Goodwins theory to have the lyrics and music video connect when in a narrative music video.

Throughout the ‘Joanna’ music video there are many connections that can be made with the lyrics; the fact that throughout there is clips of woman, we can commonly connect this to the lyric Joanna, even though it makes you wonder which one is Joanna it is clear that it has a connection to the lyric which is used throughout

Page 11: Media video analysis

Intertextual references • The ‘Joanna’ video could be related to different tv series in which they hold the

girls as having one night stands and sleeping around, I would say that this could be related to programs such as Skins, where the characters all sleep with each other but don’t let it lead to anything more series at the start, it is all about having the ‘one night stand’ thing which is what could be referred to in the song ‘Joanna’

Page 12: Media video analysis

narrative based• ‘Joanna’ is heavily narrative based on the fact that the lyrics join with the acting

and tell a story in which you can generate in your head, this is a common convection noticed within Goodwins theory of which the two should link to make one whole for the viewer.

• If the two did not link this wouldn’t make it easy for the viewers to understand and they would not be able to generate the kind of story that they were aiming for in their heads, this is why it is very important that the two have a correlation and that the correlation between the two can broadly be seen throughout

The xx- Crystalised

The xx are an English Indie dream pop band formed in 2005, the group released its debut album xx in august 2005

The song crystalised is about keeping someone satisfied in a relationship and how you would aim to do anything to keep them happy without hurting them because they have thinking they are ‘crystalised’

Page 14: Media video analysis

Characteristics• ‘The xx’s video crystalised can be seen to hold many of the same characteristics as

Haims video ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’, it holds the same affect in which all of the music video is performance based in which it is not telling any sort of story instead we are brought to focus on the four individual band members

Page 15: Media video analysis

Relationship between lyrics and visual

• Again the video hold deep dark blue lighting which can be connected to the common convections of a indie performance video in which they have a dark setting for the dark meaning of their lyrics

• This is seen throughout the whole ‘crystalised’ video in which their faces match the vibe of the song which match the lyrics so in a way you can say that what you are visualizing on the face of the band is what is the meaning and common connection that may be made behind the lyrics

Page 16: Media video analysis

motifs • The motif for this band is that they all hold a guitar at some point throughout the

video• The guitar can be seen often throughout the video with close up of the guitar and

its strings and close ups of an individual playing the guitar• It can also be seen in a wide shot of the whole band standing with a microphone in

a stand and playing the guitar whilst singing along to the song. • This is a repeated pattern which you can see happening throughout the whole

video with the guitar in hand

Page 17: Media video analysis

Performance based• The video for ‘Crystalised’ is performance based in which they all stand at some

point in the video playing all together whilst singing and playing a guitar • You could refer to their video as them giving a show to the audience that is viewing

it as they often look into the camera whilst performing to it • You can tell that the video is performance based, because the lyrics and the visuals

share no correlation and the visual fails to tell a story that could be connected together along with the lyrics
