The convention stating a demand of close ups of the main vocalist is directly adhered to in this shot. This also occurs just before the chorus, where the atmosphere begins to change, highlighted by the colour of the sky behind him, again referencing the style convention.

At this point, the lyrics begin. We clearly see the main vocalist as his is in the foreground, whereas the guitarist is situated slightly behind. This orchestrates a hierarchy in the video suggesting these are the two most recognisable of the group.

Here we can see a direct relationship between the music and visuals, as the sky turns darker, the music becomes more sinister and dark itself. The convention stating certain genres of music having certain video styles is adhered to here as we see a shot of almost the entire band in a live stage performance-esque manner.

There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals due to the words “youth” being sung, there is a shot of two youths playing with insects. This shot is challenged by the nature of the music video as it is not expected to feature the innocence of children in this style of video.

During the solo, we see the happy family being sucked into the black hole. There is a correlation between the mood of this procedure and music, as it is very frantic and dark. This is also a reference to previous lyrics stating “wash away the rain” referring to the family as the rain.

A correlation between music, lyrics and visuals is displayed as the chorus “black hole sun” is sung in a dark impending manner, accompanied by the presence of what appears to be a black hole sun, behaving in a dark and sinister fashion.

This is one of the final shots of the music video and continues to express the apocalyptic nature of it. The atmosphere of the audio towards the end is especially dark, represented visually by a series of shots of the black hole itself, truly solidifying the dark nature of this video.

After the hectic solo, the atmosphere is calmed and returns to the verse. For this, we see the main vocalist at the centre as the camera zooms. This is complying with the main vocalist attracting the most screen time as well as close ups.
