For 2013 Leeds Young Film Festival is very proud to support the Child Friendly Leeds initiative which aims to make Leeds a place where children are valued, supported, enjoy growing up, and look forward to a bright future. We’ve always believed that children and young people should enjoy the amazing culture that Leeds has to offer and that the Film Festival delivers something special and unique. For our 14th edition we have once again scoured the planet to bring you the best new and unseen films, including some magical movies that you’ll never see at the multiplex or at home.For those of you who want to do more than just watch films, the Film Academy programme is back bigger than ever with lots of exciting workshops and masterclasses aimed at giving you the chance to go behind the scenes and learn more about the moving image industry (see pages 28-33).The festival now hosts three young filmmaking competitions celebrating young filmmaking talent (including the brand new Leeds Young Music Video Awards with East Leeds FM) so it has never been a better time to be a young filmmaker in the city.

ArtForms, Leeds Young Film Festival and Logistik are delighted to present the 2013 Golden Owl Awards, celebrating the work of Leeds schools, community groups and individual filmmakers.This ‘Oscars’ style red carpet, black tie extravaganza will showcase the best new films from the emerging talent across the city in the splendour of Leeds Town Hall with awards being handed out by local dignitaries and celebrities. Expect to see some famous faces from film and TV and the sounds of Leeds Youth Jazz and Training Orchestras filling the auditorium as well as one or two other surprises throughout the night! You can follow the action as it unfolds as Young Bloggers working with North East Leeds City Centre will be documenting the day to share online.

Next morning, following a terrible storm, a young boy appears, although Timothy Green is not all that he seems...

The Odd Life of Timothy Green is directed by Peter Hedges who rose to success with the adaptation of his own novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? which earned Leonardo di Caprio an Academy Award® nomination. His adaptation of Nick Hornby’s About A Boy was also Oscar nominated in 2002.

Jennifer Garner (Juno, Electra) and Joel Edgerton (Star Wars Ep.II Attack of the Clones) play Timothy’s parents but it is newcomer CJ Adams who steals the film with his portrayal of Timothy, a boy looking for a home and a place to belong. With a supporting cast including such great stars as Dianne Wiest, M Emmett Walsh, David Morse and introducing rapper Common as Coach Cal, the latest offering from Disney is sure to be a huge hit on release, so come and be the first to see it at this special preview.

Young Filmmakers’ DayLeeds Young Film Festival celebrates films made BY young people as well as FOR them, and the Young Filmmakers’ Day is a showcase of some of the best up and coming talent in the UK and the world.

The 2013 INDIs young filmmakers’ competition showcases the best UK short films made by young people who are making films without professional support or schools’ involvement. The competition is about innovation, a raw talent in filmmaking and clever or engaging storytelling with a DIY approach.

The BFI Film Academy offer opportunities for talented and committed young people aged 16-19 from all backgrounds to undertake an intensive programme of film activities led by industry professionals. The programme is being supported by the Department for Education in England who have committed £1m funding. Beta Filmworks (of which Leeds Young Film is a partner) is running one of only two programmes in Yorkshire & Humber and this showcase is an opportunity for the 2013 cohort to exhibit their work and celebrate their success.
