A special thank you to the more than 70 Medic

honorees that were in attendance to the “A

Night of Honor” themed ROSC (Return of

Spontaneous Circulation) events, May 10th and

May 12th. It was truly an emotional, proud and

celebratory event for both the honorees and

their guests.

The event captured the emotional value and

impact our EMTs and Paramedics continue to

make everyday on individuals and families throughout the greater Charlotte metro area. Many

EMTs and Paramedics were in attendance to receive their first pin, while others in the crowd

received new pins for their multiple ROSCs during the year 2009.

In addition to honoring the ROSC efforts of our field employees, the night also recognized

other members of the Medic family. Stars of Life recipients Mike Sherriff, Don Robinson and

Jonathan Wise were featured in a video dedication by their supervisor(s) as to how each

individual embodies Medic Standards of Excellence every day. CMED Assistant Supervisor,

Bryan Hancock was recognized for his outstanding dedication and service to the community as

the 2010 Outstanding Medic for the Burnette/Nobles Safety Award. The night also paid tribute

to Mike Gilmore who will soon retire from the Medic Tactical EMS program (better known as

the Medic SWAT unit). Mike Gilmore has been an original member of the Medic SWAT unit

since its inception more than 16 years ago.

Photos from both ROSC events will soon be available online. A link from Nikkie Perry will be

sent out later this week with all the photos taken during the May 10th and May 12th events.

For now, please turn to page two for a photo highlight of the Monday, May 10th ROSC

celebration! The Medic Dispatch will run a full page photo spread of the Wednesday, May 12th

ROSC celebration in next week’s edition of the Medic Dispatch In addition, a DVD of the ROSC

celebrations will be made for any employee who wishes to view the ROSC celebration from

the comfort of their home.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our two ROSC events including all honorees and

their families, supervisors as well as special guests, Dr. Paul Colavita of Carolinas HealthCare

Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute; Dr. Yele Aluko of MidCarolina Cardiology and Debi Faubion,

current President of Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment (MMAE).

Please be aware that at midnight on Friday, May 21st, Time

Warner Cable will perform telecom initial maintenance.

There be a service interruption from 1 to 10 minutes on

the T-1 that carries out internet and mobile mapping data

traffic due to this maintenance.

Units will not track in CAD, receive call data or routes

(they will still track on the MDT in the unit), nor will they

be able to transmit status changes. Please be aware to

make their status changes for them. The EPCR data

transmitted to unit's tablets will not be available during this

time frame; however it should "catch up" when

connectivity is restored.

Because the service interruption will occur on midnight,

overnight shifts late Thursday night into early Friday

morning will be affected during the service interruption.

Please contact Communications Manager, Todd Sims at

[email protected] or 6173, for any questions about

the upcoming service interruption. Thank you.

The beginning of April was an extremely busy month for both the Medic PR department and the Agency. On April 1st,

Medic’s Lucky Hearts Campaign participated in a press conference in honor of State Representative Becky Carney.

Representative Carney celebrated her “new” birthday on this day, because exactly one year before the press conference

date Carney suffered a cardiac arrest and was saved by a public use AED in the State Legislative Building.

In honor of Carney’s new birthday, several organizations donated toward the purchase of 20 AEDs to be distributed

throughout Mecklenburg County. The Press Conference announced that Medic’s own Lucky Hearts Campaign would be

heading up the efforts to interview nominees, train individuals in CPR/AED awareness and distribute the AEDs.

Also during the first two weeks of April, Medic participated in an MCI Drill with the NC National Guard, as well as other

County first responders. Several news outlets were present and our employees were featured on almost every station.

A huge thank you to Kevin Staley and Brian Smith, who participated in media interviews on behalf of Medic. If you would

like to check out our employees in action, please go to www.medic911.com/video_gallery_news.

Finally, Medic celebrated National Telecommunicator Week by pitching a few stories at our local media. Channel 9

visited CMED during Telecommunicator Week to take a peek at our dispatch center and to get more background

information on our CMED employees, their training and certifications. The PR department would like to thank Todd

Simms for participating in the interview and thank the entire CMED crew! If you would like to check out the interview,

again please visit www.medic911.com/video_gallery_news.

In total, Medic and our employees were mentioned a total of 213 times during the month of April including several

serious calls – from multiple patient MVA’s to several shootings. Below is a chart representing our overall April media

placements:

The Medic PR department invites all employees and their families to check out the several new additions to our news

coverage. The recent clips that have been added include: Telecommunicator Week, two MCI Drill clips, Lucky Hearts/

Becky Carney Press Conference and a STEMI protocol interview. To view the latest Medic news coverage please visit

www.medic911.com/video_gallery_news.

If you have any suggestions for the PR department or if you have a call that you would like to highlight, please contact

Kristin Young in the PR Department at extension 6165 or [email protected].

As we start EMS Week 2010,

please be mindful that the Agency

will be utilizing areas in, around

and near the Bay Area for EMS

Week festivities.

Starting today, the parking area

currently used by motorcyclists

will be closed off in preparation

for the EMS Week Cookout.

Please be sure to make note of the change and plan for

alternate parking accordingly. The coned area will be solely

used for EMS Week setup and activities. All personal vehicle

parking in this area will be restricted.

Please feel free to contact Nikkie Perry at

[email protected] or ext. 6178 or Ted Wise at

[email protected] or 6153 if you have any questions

about the use of the motorcycle parking lot for EMS Week.

Thank you.

There will be no May Inservice. The next Inservice will take

place in June.

However, two Paramedic refresher courses will be offered

during the last week of May:

What: 12-Lead ECG Refresher class at Medic

When: May 25th & 27th, 12:00 pm -16:00 pm

Where: Medic Auditorium

Sign up sheets for the two Paramedic refresher classes are

currently located in the Bay Area.

No May InService

Purpose

To allow employees to cash-out a limited amount of accrued vacation time on an annual basis.

Policy

Employees who have more than 30 days (240 hours) of accrued vacation will be allowed to

“cash-out” a minimum of one (1) day (8 hours) up to a maximum of five (5) days (40 hours) per

year for the amount of days over 30. This “cash-out” will be included in the second pay period of June. Vacation hours accrued thru the first paycheck in June will be used as the vacation “cash-out” eligibility criteria. Vacation hours used,

accrued, or earned during the “cash-out” pay period will not be considered in determining vacation “cash-out” eligibility. All

“cash-outs” must be in increments of 8-hours only. No partial days will be accepted.

Employees who want to take advantage of this benefit must have at least 240-hours remaining in their accrual balance after the “cash-out”.

Vacation “cash-out” requests must be submitted through completion of the “Vacation Cash-Out Form” to the Payroll

department. A copy of the completed form will then be forwarded to Human Resources to be included in the personnel

files.

The Payroll department has the authority to make necessary adjustments in an employee’s “cash-out” request if the “cash-

out” hours have been incorrectly requested (i.e., the number of “cash-out” hours is greater than the number of “cash-out”

hours available). For more information on Medic’s vacation cash out policy, please contact Accounting Coordinator, Darlene

Hicks at [email protected] or ext. 6113. Thank you.
