It is not necessary that every one should give a large donation, but if a small sum-- say ten or even five shillings-were given by every reador of these pages, the committee would at once be relieved of all anxiety respecting the result of their appeal. We shall! be glad to know that-our advocacy of this project has been successful. Subscriptions may be sent to Sir G. INSURAffCE IN BURIAL AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

THERE are few more important subjects for investigation than the rates ofmortality among infants and children insured in Friendly Societies; andwe cannot but agree with the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies, whoin his last Annual Report dwelt upon the desirability of the Registrar.General publishing returns of the number of certificates issued by regis-trars for the payment of money on Friendly Society policies. Although areturn of the number of deaths of insured lives would afford but a slightclue to the rate of mortality, unless the numbers of the insured wereknown, it would be a decided advantage to have returns showing theextent of insurance in Friendly Societies in different parts of the country,Dr. J. B. Russell, the indefatigable medical officer of health and sta.tistician of Glasgow, has, in a Quarterly Report just issued, suppliedsome valuable figures, showing the numbers and proportions of deaths inGlasgow among persons insured in Friendly Societies. In noticing thedecline in the proportion of uncertified deaths of children in Glasgow,Dr Russell suggests that the Friendly Societies Act, by placing difficultiesin the way of issuing a certificate for the payment of money unless thecause of death has been duly certified, has probably conduced to thedecline of the uncertified cases. Whether this decline in Glasgow be dueto the operation of the Friendly Societies Act, or to the public attentionwhich Dr. Russell directed to this subject rather more than twelve monthsago, no one can doubt the interest of this evidence of the extent to whichthe lives of the people of Glasgow are involved in the operation of theFriendly Societies Act. It appears that 36 per cent. of all the deaths

registered in Glasgow are of persons registered in Friendly Societies;among children and adults aged over five years the proportion is 39 percent., and it follows that the proportion among all infants and childrenunder five years of age was little less, although the actual proportion isnot stated. Among legitimate infants under one year of age the propor-tion of insured to deaths is 21 per cent., while only 4 per cent. of theillegitimate are insured; between one and five years 47 per cent. nf thelegitimate children are insured, and 22 per cent. of those born out ofwedlock. In accordance with the Friendly Societies Act, a childiunderfive years may not be insured for an amount exceeding .E6, nor a childaged between five and ten years for a sum exceeding .610. These sums

Dr. Russell thinks are sufficient, even after deduction of the costs ofburial on the most liberal scale, to give parents a pecuniary interest in thedeaths of their children. In this case it is an important fact to haveascertained that nearly half the children dying in Glasgow between theages of one and five years are insured, and it is to be hoped that somemeasures will be adopted to supply similar information with regard todeaths of insured children in some of our large English towns. Bearingin mind the grave responsibility assumed by Insurance Societies thatunder-take this industrial business, they should be obliged to give the greatestpublicity to carefully prepared statistics showing the number of lives in-sured at different ages, and the number and proportion of deaths occur-ring annually among the insured. The profits on lapsed policies in thisform of insurance is so enormous that the Companies can unfortunatelyafford to suffer from excessive rates of mortality without imperilling theirrevenue. These considerations should not, however, exonerate the Com-panies from giving the most accurate facts relating to the rate of mortalityamong children insured in Societies doing business of this character.

Mr. . de Watteville’sletter on " Induction Coils" shall appear next week.

LICENSED LODGING-ROUSES AT CAMERIDGE.

To the Editor of THE LANCET.SiR,—I see that in your valuable journal attention is directed by a eocre-

spondent to the sanitary condition of the lodging-houses at Cambridge, and, bein personally interested in the uncomfortable condition of one of thesehouses, I venture to ask your permission to corroborate his statements. In my own lodging I find it impossible to make use of the accommodation

supplied, owing to its uncleanness and want of ventilation. From theformer I conclude that there is but one such apartment in the house; whilethe latter is apparent from the noisome vapours which, in warm weather orduring a dearth of rain, float up the stairs, and permeate the atmosphere ofmy sitting-room. I can well recollect that my fellow-student on one occa-sion, driven to desperation, purchased a bottle of Condy’s disinfecting fluid, and poured it upon the stairs, to the slight detriment of the carpet, but thepleasant relief of our oppressed senses.

I remain, Sir, yours obediently,July, 1877. ANOTHER UNDERGRIDU4TIt.

HYPODERMIC INJECTION OF SALICYLIC ACID IN ERYSIPELAS.PROFESSOR FERDINAND PETERSEN, of Kiel, in a communication to theDeutsche Med. Wochen., states that he has thrice arrested the. progress oferysipelas by injecting a concentrated solution of salicylic acid under thehealthy skin surrounding the diseased part. Several such injections woremade simultaneously in each of the cases. He does not, however, positivelyassert that the good effect was simply owing to the operation.

Mr. W. Houghton.-The treatment of phthisis with hypophosphites- hasbeen discussed in these columns.

Dr. Madden.-We cannot insert communications addressed to other journals.
