If Wishes Were Hospitals...

Ever thought "I wish we had that in medicine?" Want to be the "Apple" of healthcare?  Why would hospitals pay tens of thousands of dollars to implement the Disney Be Our Guest Program? Would you?

Why Blog About Cross-Pollination?

1. Open lines of communication.  2. Inexpensive. You do have the internet, right?  3. Encourage new stem cell lines for innovation.

4. Spread the gospel.

5. Give/get link love.

6. Piggyback Effect - gain credibility.

If You Want It, Come and Get It...

"In some ways, we have the problem that it looks like innovation is

flourishing, but too much of it is short-term, incremental innovation."

Judy Estrin, entrepreneur, former CTO of Cisco Systems

Best Practices = ?

1. WHERE/HOW: Exchanged, like instructional capital, by any means, though Internet-related information is most commonly exchanged this way. 2. WHAT: Most efficient (least amount of effort) and effective (best results) way of accomplishing a task. 3. WHEN/WHO: Based on repeatable procedures that have proven themselves over time for large numbers of people.

What Value Can You Add?

2,170,000 for best practices for hospitals. (0.17seconds; 9.3.08)

 +100 million websites.

Proliferation of blogs, tweets, pages, and images actually

inhibits problem solving.

Too much noise.

You become the filter.

Sales – 10.80.10 Rule of Health Consumerism

• “the middle 80”•  • healthcare search/research and consumption (even online)

still largely circumstantial - vast majority of us fall into the “middle 80”

•  • problem is, as 'massclusivity' 24-7 consumers, we'll look for

healthcare information to be available when/where we need it, as in other consumer industries, online and offline

•  • and it's not there yet (Health 2.0)

Gaming - Guitar Hero Healthcare

Most widely read blog entry ever.  Used extended metaphor.  Discussed succession planning, intergenerational conflict/collaboration – importance of listening to younger patients.

Bonus Slide - Helps Prevent Blog Burnout

Continually ask (at least once a quarter): • Why am I doing this? (job offer, catharsis, connect with

others, show it like it is/show it like it could be, 'change the world')

• Do I enjoy it? (a bit of brain/ego stroking involved in blogging, no doubt – so be generous with that warm and fuzzy feeling – can you invite colleagues? Who has good thoughts and would be a good guest blogger? What introvert needs a little push?)

• For whom does it provide value (myself, others, etc)? • Is it changing my view of healthcare? •
