Suffering for Their Faith

Christians living in the Middle East have survived severe persecution over the past century — most recently ISIS’campaign of genocide. Thenumber of Christians in Iraqhas dropped from 1.5 millionbefore 2003 to around200,000 today. The SyrianChristian population hasalso declined sharply.

ISIS forced Christiansthroughout Iraq and Syriato flee their homes, andeven now many have beenunable to return and rebuildtheir lives.

Pope Francis has said: “We must not resign ourselves to

thinking of a Middle Eastwithout Christians, who for 2,000 years have confessed the name of Jesus.”

For Christianity in the Middle East to have a future, our brothers and sisters in the region need our help.

Christians in the Middle East:A 2,000 Year History

For the first thousand years after Christ, Christianitywas primarily a Middle Eastern religion. Until around1000 AD, there were more Christians in the MiddleEast than in Europe.

Christians have been present in the Middle East sincethe time of Christ and the Apostles. In fact, St. Paul didnot bring Christianity to Syria, it was Syrian Christianswho baptized him.

Often targets of persecution, the number of Christians has fallen dramatically in the past century. However, many Catholic,Orthodox and other Christians still live in the Middle East today. Some of these communities still pray in the language of Jesus.

Knights of Columbus Aids Suffering Christians

“Without the help of the Knights of Columbus, theChristians of Iraq would have disappeared. Thank youfor standing with us.” —Archbishop Bashar Warda of Erbil

Rebuilding

The K of C is committed to rebuilding thepredominantly Christian town of Karamles. About $2,000 can move a family displaced by ISISback into their home.

AdvocacyThe K of C’s efforts —including the submission ofa nearly 300-page report —were key in the U.S. StateDepartment's declaration ofISIS’ genocide againstChristians. This advocacycontinues across multiplefronts.
