647 in acute forms of the disorder; as affecting the periosteum connecting the tooth with the alveolus; and lastly, as affecting the neurilemma of nerves-rheumatic neuralgia. Gout was described as giving rise to a spbcific form of tooth- ache. Into this description the lecturer entered minutely, giving illustra tions to show that a severe and peculiar tooth- ache is often the first indication of acute gout in persons in whom the gouty diathesis is present, and that it is very incorrect practice to connect gout as a disease with no other symptom than the swollen great toe. The last part of the lecture was taken up with the considera- tion of treatment; and in this part many interesting subjects were brought forward, especially in regard to the dietetic management of infantile dyspepsia, and the treatment of that form of dyspeptic toothache which is dependent on acid secre- tions. In these latter instances, Dr. Richardson advocated the treatment first advocated by Mr. Gaskoin, and supported by Dr. Rigby-of using the alkalies as remedies, both locally and medicinally. The attendance of members was well sustained. Medical News. CAMBRIDGE.-MEDICAL DEGREES.-A Congregation was held on Tuesday last for confirming by graces of the Senate the resolutions of the Council respect ing medical degrees. The Council think it necessary to remark that as, by the provisions of the Medical Act (21 and 22 Victoria, c. 90), Bachelors of Medicine will hereafter have the right of registration as quali- fied to practise medicine, and it will no longer be necessary for such persons to obtain a licence to practise, it has not been thought necessary to prescribe any course of study or examina- tions for the licence to practise; but it is proposed to alter the course of study and examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, so as to ensure in all who take it the possession of the requisite amount of knowledge. They recommend that five years of medical study be required of candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, with the exception of students who have graduated as Bachelors of Arts, in whose case four years of medical study shall be deemed sufficient; and that of the time required to be spent in medical study, six terms be so spent in the University, commencing not earlier than after the expiration of the first three terms of residence, provided that three terms so spent shall suffice in the case of any B. A. who shall have taken an honour in the Mathematical, Classical Natural Sciences, or Moral Sciences Tripos. These resolutions were withdrawn on the 14th inst., as a large majority of the Board of Medical Studies is opposed to them, and they are to undergo further consideration. The Professor of Chemistry will commence his Course of Lectures on Tuesday, Feb. 22nd, 1859, at the Laboratory, in the Botanic Garden, at twelve o’clock, Those gentlemen who wish to attend them are re- quested to leave their names at Messrs. Deighton, Bell, and Co.’s. The Dublin Court of Exchequer and a special jury were occu-pied five days during last week with an action for damages, inwhich the sum of £500 was claimed, The plaintiff was Mr.Arthur St. George, a young officer in the army; the defendant,Mr. Jerome O’Flahertv, surgeon and apothecary, resident atKingstown. Mr. O’Flaherty denied that the powders hadbeen purchased at his shop, and his counsel openly alleged thatthe action was the result of a conspiracy to extort money fromhim. Dr. Baikie,R.N., and the Government members of the expedition, werein exce’lent health after their twelve months’ encampment onthe banks of the Niger. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11TH.-Though the mortality of Londonis still high, the returns are gradually resuming a more favour-able aspect. In the week ending Nov. 27th the deaths rose to1802, in the following week they declined to 1738, and in thelast week ending Saturday the llth, they were 1531. Themean temperature of these three weeks has been respectively37 4°, 46.3°, and 36.5°. In the ten years 1848-57, the averagenumber of deaths in the weeks corresponding with last weekwas 1183; but as the deaths in the present return occurred iuan increased population, they should be compared with theaverage when it is raised in proportion to the increase, a cor.rection which will make it 1301. The comparison shows that230 persons died last week in excess of the number whosedeaths would have been recorded if the rate of mortality hadnot been higher than the average. The deaths arising fromdiseases of the organs of respiration (exclusive of hooping-cough and phthisis) were last week 441, having been in thetwo preceding weeks 524 and 516. The corrected average forlast week is 296. Bronchitis was fatal in 310, 298, and 250cases in the last three weeks; phthisis in 190, 176, and 166;pneumonia decreased from 171 to 142. Measles was fatal in46 cases last week, which is 16 above the average. The deathsreferred to small-pox are 13; to scarlatina 137. Six occurredfrom the latter disease in Somers-town, and 5 in St. Leonards,Shoreditch. At 5, Harding’s-terrace, St. Mary, Newington, six children in a family have been attacked by scarlatina, andone has died. The nonagenarians whose deaths are recordedare five, and are all widows; their respective ages are 90, 94,95, 95, and 98 years. A labourer, aged thirty-five years, diedon the 10th inst., at 54, Phoenix-street, Spitalfields, from desti-tution.

Last week the births of 955 boys and 850 girls, in all 1805children, were registered in London. In the ten correspondingweeks of the years 1848-57 the average number was 1541.
