He must have attended the Medical and Surgical Practice of a recognised hospital for two years, and have held the posts of clinical clerk and surgical dresser for periods of six months each. Candidates will be examined in Medicine, Pathology, Forensic Medicine and Hygiene, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The subjects may be divided into two groups-namely : (1) Medicine, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, and Hygiene ; and (2) Surgery, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology. These groups may be taken either separately or together. The list of candidates who have passed will be published I in two parts-namely, an Honours list and a Pass I list. Bachelors of Medicine of this University who graduated in or before May, 1904, may obtain the B.S. degree by passing the Surgical part of the M.B., B.S. examination. Doctor of Medicine.-The examination for this degree takes place twice in each year, commencing on the first Monday in December and on the first Monday in July. Candidates may present themselves for exami- nation in one of the following branches-namely : (1) Medicine ; (2) Pathology; (3) Psychological Medicine ; (4) Midwifery and Diseases of Women ; (5) State Medicine ; and (6) Tropical Medicine. Any candidate for the degree of M.D. (except in branch 5) may transmit to the Registrar a thesis or published work having definite relation to the branch of Medicine in which he is a candidate, and if the thesis be approved by the examiners the candidate may be exempted from a part or from the whole of the written examina- tion in that subject. Master of Surgery.-The examination for the degree of Master of Surgery takes place twice in each year and commences on the first Monday in December and on the first Monday in July. Candidates may present themselves for examination in one of the following branches: (1) Surgery; (2) Dental Surgery; (3) Ophthalmology ; (4) Laryngology, Otology and Rhinology. A thesis may be submitted as for M.D. Fees.-Matriculation .62 12s. 6d. for each entry. at provincial examinations an additional local fee is charged. First examination for Medical Degrees: ;06 6s. for each entry to the entire examination. For re-examination in one subject the fee is 22 2s. MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON.1 ST. BARTHOLOMEW’S HOSPITAL AND COLLEGE.-The hospital contains 757 beds, of which 687 are for patients in the hospital at Smithfield and 70 for convalescent patients at Swanley. It receives over 9000 in-patients annually and its out-patients and casualties amount to more than 75,000 annually. Special departments have been organised for Diseases of Women and Children, the Eye, Ear, Larynx, and Skin, as well as for Orthopaedic and Dental Surgery, and for Electro-therapeutics and X Ray work. Surgical operations take place every day, except Saturdays, at 1.30 P.M., and Surgical consultations are held on Thursdays at the same hour. Medical con- sultations are held on Thursdays at 3.15 P.M. The physicians and surgeons deliver clinical lectures weekly during both the winter and the summer 1 For Ancillary Metropolitan Medical Schools see p. 435. sessions. Clinical lectures on all special subjects are also given. Wholetime Clinical Units under Professors 3f Medicine and Surgery have been established. Ten house physicians and ten house surgeons are appointed annually, and are provided with rooms and board by the hospital authorities and receive 280 a year as salary. A resident midwifery assistant, an ophthalmic house surgeon, and a house surgeon for diseases of the throat, nose, and ear are appointed every six months, and are provided with rooms and board, and receive a salary of 280 a year. Three resident administrators of anaesthetics are appointed, the senior for one year at a salary of j6150, and two juniors for six months with a salary at the rate of 280 per annum, with board and rooms. An extern midwifery assistant is appointed every three months, and receives a salary of 280 a year. The clinical clerks, the obstetric clerks, the clerks to the medical out-patients, the dressers to the surgical in-patients and to the out-patients, and the dressers in the special departments are chosen from the students. A residential college is attached to the hospital. New Buildings.-The new buildings comprise residential quarters for the resident staff, casualty, medical, surgical, and special out-patient departments, casualty wards, dispensary, and clinical lecture theatre. There is a chemical laboratory attached to the Medical College as well as a laboratory devoted to instruction in Public Health. A block is devoted to Pathology, and contains the post-mortem room as well as extensive laboratories for bacteriology, clinical pathology, pathological histology, and pathological chemistry. The Medical School Buildings include three large lecture theatres, a large dissecting room, laboratories for chemistry, biology, and public health, as well as a spacious library (containing 14,500 volumes), a well-appointed museum of anatomy, physiology, comparative anatomy, materia medica, botany, and pathological anatomy. The patho- logical museum is the most complete in the kingdom. A new block in Giltspur-street has recently been acquired and has been fitted up as lecture theatres and laboratories for physics, chemical physiology, experimental physiology, histology, and pharmaco- logy. Special Classes for the Primary and Final F.R.C.S. are held twice yearly. Instruction in Preliminary Science is given to University of London students in chemistry, biology, and physics throughout the year. Laboratory Instruction for the D.P.H. is provided during the winter and summer sessions. Facilities for research work are afforded in the Clinical Units and the Laboratories of the pathological and other departments. A Vacation Post-graduate Co?tr8e, adapted to the needs of general practitioners, is given annually. The recreation ground of 10 acres is at Winchmore Hill for the use of the members of the Students’ Union, which all students are expected to join. The Students’ Union contains a large reading and smoking room, a committee and writing room, luncheon and dining hall, and a miniature rifle range. Scholarships given in aid of Medical Study.-At this school various Scholarships, prizes, &c., are given. For five of the Scholarships and the Exhibition- namely, (a), (b), two Entrance Scholarships in Science of the respective values of 275 and 2100 (c) Entrance Scholarship in Arts, 2100 (d) Jeaffreson Exhibition, .850 ; and (e) Shuter Scholarship, jS50—a full or University course at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital is required. The awards of (a) and (b) are made after examination in selections from the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Botany, Physiology, and Anatomy ; (c) and (d) are awarded after examination in Latin, Mathematics, and Greek or French or German ; (e) is awarded after competitive examination among Cambridge Graduates in Anatomy and Physio- logy. CEARING CROSS HOSPITAL.-The Hospital, to whichthe School is attached, contains 300 beds. Over 3000cases pass through its wards each year, and some24,000 out-patients and casualties are treated. Thereare special departments for Mental Diseases, Mid-wifery, Diseases of Women, of Children, of the Skin,Ear, Throat, Nose, and Teeth, for Orthopaedic Cases,X Ray work, and for Electrical Examination andTreatment.Appointments.-In the Medical School Demonstra-

torships and Assistant Demonstratorships are open tostudents of the School. Medical, Surgical, andObstetric Registrars to the Hospital are appointedannually. Six House Physicians, six House Surgeons,and two Resident Obstetric Officers are appointedeach year after competitive examination.Primary and Intermediate Studies.-By an agree-

ment with the University of London the School sendsits Primary and Intermediate Students to receivetheir lectures and practical work at King’s College,which is situated within four minutes’ walk.Final Studies.-These are taken in the school and

hospital, where systematic lectures, demonstrations,and tutorial classes are arranged to cover all thesubjects necessary for qualifying examinations.Departments are also available for other final subjectsof Materia Medica, Toxicology, and Operative Surgery.An Institute of Pathology with a whole-time staff

of scientific workers and fully equipped Laboratorieshas been established in the School. Students receivetheir training in Preventive Medicine, Pathology, andBacteriology here, and are encouraged to undertakeResearch. Special facilities are available for Post-graduate Research and Study.The course in Ophthalmology is given in the Royal

Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital adjoining. Speciallectures and demonstrations are arranged for Post-graduates.The Museum contains over 4000 specimens,

including a notable collection of over 800 gynaeco-logical specimens, " The Cuthbert Lockyer Collection."Students’ Club.-The social comfort and con-

venience of students are met by library, reading, andsmoking-rooms, refreshment-room, &c. The Club,which is under the control of a Committee of Students,provides needful athletic recreation, and includes theMedical Society. An athletic ground, comprising sixacres, has recently been acquired and is now in use. ,

Women Students.-Women students are admittedto the School and Hospital upon the same terms andconditions as men, and after qualification are eligiblefor resident Hospital appointments.Fees.-Entrance: Primary and Intermediate, 10

guineas ; Final, 8 guineas ; Annual, 242. :Further information may be obtained on application

ST. GEORGE’B HOSPITAL.-This hospital has a service ’of 436 beds, of which 180 are allotted to surgical, 150 :to medical cases, and 100 are at the Convalescent ]

Hospital at Wimbledon. One ward is set apart forDiseases Peculiar to Women, and a Maternity Ward 4of 11 beds has been instituted recently. Children’s 4

beds are placed in the women’s wards. Two wardsare allotted to ophthalmic cases.I

Entrance Scholarships and Endowed Prizes of atotal value of JB700 are awarded annually ; a detailed

list is placed below. The entire teaching and labora-tories are now devoted to purely clinical subjects, andarrangements have been made with the authorities ofKing’s College for students who enter the first, second,or third year of the curriculum as students of St.George’s to carry out the necessary courses of instruc-tion at that College. Students then complete theircourse, without payment of any entrance fee, in aschool entirely devoted to clinical work.

Eight house physicians and eight house surgeons areappointed annually. Special attention is directed tothe following paid appointments, among others, whichare open to students after they have held houseoffice :-Resident Assistant Physician and ResidentAssistant Surgeon, at ,e350 per annum each ; MedicalRegistrarship at J6200 per annum ; Surgical Registrar-ship at :S200 ; Assistant Curatorship of the Museum atB100 ; Obstetric Assistantship (Resident) at j650;the post of Resident Anaesthetist at £ 100 ; the posts(2), of Junior Anaesthetists, each at .830. The St.George’s Hospital Club, with smoking- and luncheon-rooms on the hospital premises, and an athleticground at Wimbledon, is an amalgamation of theHunterian Society, the Gazette, and the Rugby foot-ball, cricket, lawn tennis, boxing, rifle, and golf clubs.Students have the advantage of a library of medicaland scientific books which is kept up to date.

Scholarships and Prizes.-At this school threeentrance scholarships are given, the money value andthe subjects of examination being as follows : (a) and(b) two University Entrance Scholarships, 90 guineasand 270 respectively; (c) Devitt-Pendlebury Scholar-ship, .650, Anatomy and Physiology. This year,in addition to these Scholarships, Exhibitions,each of the value of JB40 and up to eight innumber, will be awarded to candidates of approvedmerit in the Entrance Scholarships Examination.The others are as follows : (d) William Brown Exhibi-tion, tenable for two years and open to perpetualpupils having registrable qualifications, B150 perannum, Practice of Medicine, Midwifery, andSurgery ; (e) William Brown Exhibition, tenable forthree years and open to perpetual pupils qualified notmore than three years previously, 249 per annum,Essay and Original Work ; (f) Allingham Scholarshipin Surgery for Students qualified not more thanthree years, 285 ; (g) and (h) two BrackenburyPrizes, one in Medicine and one in Surgery, 33 each,open to students of not more than five years’ stand-ing ; (i) H. C. Johnson Memorial Prize, jS19, PracticalAnatomy ; (j) Pollock Prize, .823, Physiology, Physio-logical Chemistry, and Histology ; (k) Clarke Prize,.85 ; ; (1) Thompson Medal, :89, Clinical Reports ;(m) Brodie Prize, .88, Clinical Reports ; (;?) WebbPrize, open to perpetual pupils, ;E;)4, Bacteriology ;(o) Sir Francis Laking Memorial Prize, ;E65, open tostudents having registrable qualifications.

Guy’s HOSPITAL.-This hospital, founded byThomas Guy in 1724 for the reception of 400 patients,and enlarged through the aid of a large bequest fromthe late William Hunt, contains at the present time626 beds. The whole of the medical school has beenrebuilt during the last 27 years. It provides ampleaccommodation, with modern equipment, for all thenon-clinical subjects of the medical curriculum.Within the grounds of the hospital are situated theresidential college, with accommodation for 35 students,the students’ club, with reading, smoking, luncheon,and dining-rooms, a fives court, and swimming bath.The athletic ground and club house is situated atHonor Oak Park, and can be reached in 20 minutesfrom the hospital.House physicians, house surgeons, out-patient

officers and assistant house surgeons, obstetricresidents, house surgeons in the departments of

ophthalmology and genito-urinary diseases, housephysician, department for diseases of children,clinical assistants, clerks to anaesthetists, surgeons’dressers, medical clinical clerks, post-mortem clerks,extern obstetric dressers, and dressers and clerks inthe special departments are appointed from amongthe students upon the recommendation of the MedicalCouncil according to merit. There is a Venereal’Clinic, in accordance with the Scheme of the LocalGovernment Board and London County Council.Lectures and clinical instruction are given, to whichMedical Students and Practitioners are admittedwithout fee.

The following special departments are attached tothe hospital: Departments of ophthalmology, laryn-gology, gynaecology, diseases of children, diseases ofthe nervous system, dermatology, otology, actino-- therapeutics, anaesthetics, dentistry, orthopadics,vaccine, tuberculosis, genito-urinary and venerealdiseases, Salomon’s Welfare Centre (for Maternity.and Children).

Scholarships. - Six entrance scholarships are

awarded annually as follows :-(a) one War Memorialscholarship, providing a free Medical Education for I,five years of the value of 2200, to be awardedalternately in Arts and Science (next award, July,1.934) ; (b) one Arts scholarship of 2100 for Istudents under 21 years of age, Latin, English,Greek, or French or German, Arithmetic, Euclid, andAlgebra; (c) one Science scholarship for studentsunder 21 years, 2100 ; subjects, any two of thefollowing: Inorganic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology;d) a Junior Science scholarship of the value of .6100is offered for competition, annually in July, tocandidates who have attended Preliminary ScienceClasses at this School ; (e) two open Science scholar-ships : (1) a War Memorial scholarship of the valueof B80, awarded annually in September; (2) an openscholarship of the value of 280, awarded annually inSeptember, for students under 25 years of age whohave completed the curriculum for, or passed theexamination in, Anatomy and Physiology for a

medical degree in any University of the BritishEmpire, and have not entered as students in anyMetropolitan Medical School; subjects, any two ofthe following : Anatomy, Physiology, OrganicChemistry, Pharmacology, General Pathology.

In agreement with the practice of the Universities,an allowance will be made (1) for Military Serviceperformed by candidates, the term " military service "meaning service in the Naval or Military Forces ofHis Majesty or of His Majesty’s Allies during thewar ; or (2) in respect of other approved duties inconnexion with national defence.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON : KING’S COLLEGE.-Themedical department (Faculty of Medical Science).at this College only deals with Preliminary andIntermediate subjects, and instruction in thesesubjects is given in the College laboratories byuniversity professors and their assistants to studentsentering the College directly and also to students ofthe following four hospital schools which prepareonly for the final examinations-viz., King’s CollegeHospital, Westminster Hospital, St. George’s Hospital,and Charing Cross Hospital. The department is opento both men and women.

Scholarships.-(a) Two Warneford Entrance Scholar-ships of 230 each for four years. Examination inJuly, subjects selected from Divinity, Classics,Science. LONDON HOSPITAL.-The hospital, with its MedicalCollege and Dental School, is situated in the MileEnd-road, E. The hospital contains 948 beds, whichare in constant use, and is the only general hospitalfor East London. During last year 17,977 in-patientsand 119,749 out-patients received treatment, while7543 major operations were performed. 39,092out-patients attended the special departments fordiseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, Skin,Teeth, &c., and the Pediatric, Orthopasdic, Venereal,Radiological, Electro- and Physico-Therapeutical andInoculation Departments. The hospital presents,therefore, a large field for clinical instruction, and in itsWards and Out-patient Departments exceptionalopportunities are afforded for acquiring an extensiveand practical experience in all phases of disease.A Clinical Unit in Medicine, under the charge of

a whole-time director, provides for the more elaboratemethods of diagnosis and treatment, and takes aleading part in the initiation and coordination ofmedical research.To each medical and surgical firm throughout the

hospital there is attached a First Assistant, who isresponsible for instructing the clerks or dressers ofthe firm in elementary medicine and surgery, andwho assists the honorary members of the firm inthe preparation of their demonstrations. Specialcourses of lectures and demonstrations are arrangedin Medicine and Surgery and their ancillary subjects.Opportunities for research are provided under thesupervision of the staff.Owing to the large number of patients more appoint-

ments are open to students before and after qualifica-tion than at any other hospital. Holders of residentappointments have free board. Special classes areheld for the examinations of the University of London,for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons,for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians,and for other higher examinations. Special entries formedical and surgical practice can be made. A resi-dential Hostel on hospital grounds is provided for theconvenience of students. The Clubs Union AthleticGround of over 13 acres is within easy reach of thehospital.

ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL MEDICAL SCHOOL.-TheHospital and Medical School are situated close toPaddington station (G.W.R.) having on one side apoor district of 500,000 persons, and on the other sidethe residential district of Kensington and Bayswater.The hospital contains 305 beds and, by a scheme ofaffiliation, for teaching purposes, of certain neighbour-ing hospitals, the teaching facilities extend over 1000beds. The Athletic ground (10 acres) is situated atWembley and can be reached in 20 minutes by aconstant service of trains. A large pavilion has.recently been added.

Clinical Facilities.—Clinical Units in Medicine andSurgery were established in 1920, and have now been.formally recognised by the University Grants Com-mittee, St. Mary’s being one of the six MedicalSchools in London which enjoy this privilege. Lying-in beds have recently been added, and, in addition tothis, arrangements have been made by which allstudents take out a short course of instruction inPractical Midwifery at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital.without additional fee.

Institute of Pathology and Research.-Students-specially interested in Pathology and Bacteriology have.singular advantages at St. Mary’s. The institute com-prises seven special departments, the whole being underthe personal direction of Sir Almroth Wright, F.R.S.

Appointments.—Research Scholarships of £200each are awarded annually to students workingin the departments of the institute ; and preparationis being made to open 13 research beds. Clerkshipsin Pathology, Bacteriology, and Chemical Pathology,lasting for a period of three months, are open tostudents of the fifth year, and enable them to carryout the Pathological and Bacteriological investigationsof the wards, and learn the necessary technique undersupervision. Seventy-two of these posts are availableannually.

Complete Curriculum.-The Medical School provideacomplete courses of instruction, and students can joinat once on passing a Preliminary Examination inArts. Terms begin in October, January, and April

The CancerCharity, containing 92 beds and Special InvestigationLaboratories, offers unrivalled opportunities for thestudy of Cancer, both in its clinical and pathologicalaspects. In the Electro-Therapeutic Department,students obtain instruction in the Treatment of Lupusand Cancer by the X ray method of treatment.

The Medical School, which now includes the Bland-Sutton Institute of Pathology and the Cancer ResearchLaboratories is fully equipped for the theoretical andpractical teaching of all the subjects of the medicalcurriculum, and for the Diplomas in Public Health, forwhich two courses are held yearly, commencing inApril and October. Ample laboratory and class-room accommodation is provided. The teachingstaff includes 6 Professors, 29 recognised Teachers,8 Demonstrators, 4 tutors. The Bland-Sutton Instituteof Pathology is completely equipped for routinehospital investigations, teaching and research work,and contains a new lecture theatre and largepathological, bacteriological, and clinical labora tories, also smaller laboratories for individual researchwork. A well-equipped Anatomical and PathologicalMuseum and Reference Library offer every facilityfor study.

Other features of interest are : the institution of acourse in Medical Radiology and Electrology, underthe direction of the "Joel" Professor of Physics;D.P.H. course, under the direction of Dr. CharlesPorter, M.O.H., St. Marylebone. Primary F.R.C.S.class will resume in July.

Special classes are held to prepare students for theIntermediate Examinations of the Universities.

Hospital Appointments.—All appointments are madewithout fee of any kind, and the following are

appointed at intervals annually : six house physicians,eight house surgeons, two obstetric and gynaeco-logical house surgeons, two casualty medical officers,two casualty surgical officers, one resident anaesthetist,and two resident officers to the special departments.The medical and surgical casualty officers are ap-pointed twice a year. Eight registrars are appointedannually. Non-resident qualified clinical assistantsare appointed to assist in the various out-patientdepartments. Clinical clerks and surgical dressers arealso appointed in every department.

Scholarships, Prizes, &c.-(a), (b). Two EntranceScholarships, value £100 each, and (c) a Uni-versity Scholarship, value £50, are awarded annuallyin September. The successful candidates are

required to become general students of the school.(d) A Freer Lucas Scholarship for Foundationers orCouncil Exhibitioners of Epsom College is awardedannually on the nomination of the Headmaster. Thereare also, (e) and (f), two Broderip Scholarships, value£60 and £40 respectively ; (g) the Lyell Gold Medaland Scholarship, value £55 5s. ; (h) the John MurrayMedal and Scholarship, value £25 (awarded everythird year) ; (i) the Freeman Scholarship, value £30 ;(k) the Hetley Clinical Prize, value £25 ; (l) theLeopold Hudson Prize, value 11 guineas ; and (m) theSecond Year’s Exhibition, value 10 guineas. Thereare also numerous class prize examinations.

Fees.—The fees are arranged on a basis of anannual payment of approximately £42 for the sixyears of the curriculum. After six years, if thestudent is not qualified, the annual fee is £21.The Amalgamated Students’ Club includes the

following : the Medical Society, the Common RoomSociety, Musical Society, the cricket club, the footballclubs, the athletic club, the rowing club, the musicalsociety, the chess club, the lawn tennis club, and thehockey club. There are a restaurant and gymnasiumin the school buildings, and large athletic grounds atWembley, with new pavilion. ST. THOMAS’S HOSPITAL.-This Hospital received itspresent charter from King Edward VI., but as amonastic institution was in existence prior to the year1207. The building occupies a unique position by theriver, opposite the Houses of Parliament, and contains644 beds. The in-patients last year numbered 9930,whilst the number of attendances as out-patients,including the casualty and light departments, was462,287. There are special departments for the treat.ment of women, children, the eye, ear, nose and throat,skin, teeth, and for orthopaedics. The TuberculosisDepartment forms a part of the Lambeth scheme fortreatment of patients and for instruction. TheVenereal Department has been established as part ofthe London County Council scheme. Departments forlight treatment, X rays, and the Physico-therapeuticsare also special features. A speech clinic has beeninaugurated in connexion with the Children’s Depart-ment. Exceptional facilities are offered in the hospitallaboratories for the study of General Pathology, ClinicalPathclogy, Chemical Pathology, and of Treat-ment by Serums and Vaccines. Surgical operationstake place in the main theatres every day, exceptSaturdays, at 2 P.M. Clinical teaching in the wards,out-patients’ and special departments, is availableevery day of the week. Clinical lectures are deliveredevery Wednesday during the sessions. All appoint-ments in the hospital are open to students withoutextra fee. Appointments open to students beforequalification : Clinical clerks and dressers for in- andout-patients are selected from students who havecompleted their third years’ work. Every studentacts as clerk in the post-mortem room and in one of thepathological laboratories, takes his turn on maternityduty under proper supervision in the maternity wardthus obviating any necessity for seeking instructionelsewhere. Students are instructed in the administra.tion of anaesthetics by the hospital anaesthetists.The Students’ Club comprises a spacious restaurantand smoking and reading room. There is no occasionfor students to leave the hospital buildings duringworking hours. The curriculum is arranged to meetthe requirements of all the Examining Bodies. Specialclasses are held for the examinations at the Universityof London and for the First and Final FellowshipExaminations of the Royal College of Surgeons ofEngland. Tutorial classes in all subjects precede thevarious examinations. The hospital is easily accessiblefrom all parts.

Appointments Open to Students after Quu.liftcation.-A Resident Assistant Physician, a Resident AssistantSurgeon, and a Resident Anaesthetist are appointedannually at a salary of £200 each per annum. TwoHospital Registrars, Medical and Surgical, at an

annual salary of £250 each are appointed yearly. Thetenure of these offices may be renewed for a term notexceeding two years. An Obstetric Tutor andRegistrar, an Ophthalmic Registrar (at an annualsalary of £50 each), and an Orthopaedic Registrar(unpaid) are appointed yearly. Two Senior ResidentCasualty Officers (Medical and Surgical) are appointedyearly. Eight Resident Casualty Offieers and Anæs-thetists are appointed every six months. Seven HousePhysicians (including two Obstetric House Physicians,and one House Physician to the Department of Diseasesof Children), nine House Surgeons (including twoOphthalmic House Surgeons, one Orthopaedic HouseSurgeon, and two House Surgeons to the Ear, Nose andThroat Department) are appointed every six months.Clinical Assistants in the Special Departments are

appointed every three months, and hold office forsix months if recommended for re-election. Thereare three Assistants in the Department of Pathology ;the Senior receives £600 a year, and the two Juniors£450 each.

Fees.-The annual fees are : For each year of study£50. These fees cover all tutorial classes, but do notinclude instruction in infectious fevers, pharmacy, and

vaccination. Qualified practitioners are permitted to

attend the hospital practice on terms which may beascertained from the Medical Secretary.

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.- IUniversity College has been constituted a Univer-sity centre for the teaching of medical sciences.The College Faculty of Medical Sciences comprisesthe Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Botany,and Zoology (the Preliminary Medical Sciences ;also the Departments of Anatomy, Histology, Physio-logy, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology (the Inter-mediate Medical Sciences), and the Department ofHygiene and Public Health. Research work is under-taken in all departments. The completion of theInstitute of Medical Sciences. which the generosityof the Rockefeller Foundation made possible, providesexceptional facilities for research and post-graduatestudy in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. Inparticular might be specified the opportunities forinvestigation in human and comparative embryologyand neurology, in histology, radiology, anthropology,biochemistry, and experimental physiology andexperimental embryology. Arrangements have alsobeen made for the closer correlation of work in theInstitute with that of University College Hospital andits Medical School.

ing Board in England : (i) For the course for thePremedical Examination, 35 guineas, entitling toattendance and to the privileges of the Union Societyfor one session. (ii) For the course for the FirstExamination, 80 guineas, payable in two instalmentsof 40 guineas each. This fee entitles to attendanceduring three years (including one attendance ateach Practical Course in Physiology) in all subjectsexcept Practical Pharmacy. It also entitles to theprivileges of the Union Society for two sessions.

Open tomen and a limited number of women students.Fees for Preliminary and Intermediate Course : Seeunder University College. For the Final M.B., B.S.(London) Course, 112 guineas if paid in one sum, 115guineas if paid in two instalments, as follows-firstyear, 70 guineas ; second year, 45 guineas. This feeentitles to attendance on lectures and hospital Practiceduring three years and to one attendance on PracticalPathology and Practical Surgery. Vaccination andattendance at a Fever Hospital are not included. Thiscourse of instruction is also suitable for the correspond-ing examinations at the Universities of Oxford,Cambridge, Durham, and other British Universities,and for the medical education required by the Examin-ing Board in England and the Society of Apothecaries.There are over 300 beds in the hospital.

Clinical Units in Medicine and Surgery are now inoperation. The whole-time Directors of the Units areconcerned with the organisation of the teachinggenerally, but the honorary staff are responsible for thelargest share of the teaching in the wards and Out-patient Department of the hospital. A Unit inObstetric Medicine will be established as soon as thenew Obstetric Hospital now in course of constructionis finished.The new buildings of the Obstetric Hospital of 60

beds (rendered possible by the Rockefeller Benefac-tion), the new Residents’ House (with accommodationfor 30 residents and students), the extension to theNurses’ Home, and the new research laboratories forthe Medical School, are well under way, and thesebuildings should be ready for occupation by the springof 1925.

Special Departments, Clinical and LaboratoryFacilities.-Those who are desirous of carrying outoriginal research in Pathology, including MorbidAnatomy, Bacteriology, Experimental Pathology, andChemical Pathology, are admitted to work in thelaboratories of the school by the Professor of Pathology,and under certain conditions can receive grants fromthe Charles Graham Medical Research Fund. Aspecial course of instruction is given in conjunctionwith University College for preparation for the exa-minations for Diplomas in Public Health of the variousuniversities and examining bodies. In the DentalSchool in Great Portland-street, formerly knownas the National Dental Hospital, there is affordedthe opportunity for attending lectures and practicalinstruction in diseases of the mouth and teeth.

Appointments tenable by Students.—Clerkships anddresserships to the physicians, surgeons, anaesthetist,and pathologist are allotted amongst the students ofthe hospital. Maternity students are appointed eachmonth and reside in the Students’ House connectedwith the Medical School and Hospital. Twelve housephysicians, eight house surgeons, four senior and fourjunior obstetric assistants (of the total number ofresident officers not more than three may be held bywomen students at any one time) are selected annuallyby examination from among the senior students whohave a medical qualification. The house physiciansand house surgeons reside free in the hospital for sixmonths, and the senior obstetric assistants for threemonths. In addition to these posts there are certainspecial appointments which are vacant from time totime and are filled by senior students of the hospital:Resident Medical Officer, Surgical Registrar, ObstetricRegistrar, Harker-Smith Cancer Registrar, Casualty

Museum of Pathological Anatomy.—The Museum isopen for study from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Microscopicsections of most of the specimens in the Museum havebeen prepared and are available for the use ofstudents on application to the Curator. The Museumcontains 1100 admirable paintings by Sir RobertCarswell and Sir Charles Bell and a collection ofold surgical instruments formerly belonging to RobertListon.The Anatomical Museum of the University of

London, University College, is open to all students ofUniversity College Hospital and Medical School onthe recommendation of the School Committee.The Medical Library is open daily for the purposes

of study to every student of the Medical School from9 A.M. to 5 P.M., Saturdays 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. It containsabout 13,500 works on medical subjects, includingall the current text-books and works of referencerequired for study or research.The Medical Society of University College Hospital

Medical School exists for the dual purpose (1) ofpromoting the study of medical and surgical science,and (2) of promoting social intercourse among itsmembers. All male students of the Medical School arerequired to become members. Meetings are held oncea fortnight for the purpose of discussing subjectsconnected with the study of medicine. In its socialaspect the society includes various athletic clubs andsuperintends the gymnasium and squash racquetcourt in the Medical School. The Athletic Ground,which is used in conjunction with the Union’Society of the University of London UniversityCollege, is situated near the G.W.R. station atPerivale.

WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL.—The hospital contains236 beds and affords relief to upwards of 2500 in-patients and 25,000 out-patients annually. Thereare separate departments for Diseases of the Eye, ISkin, Teeth, Ear, Nose, and Throat, for Orthopaedic

practice, for Diseases of Women, for Diseases ofChildren, for Radiography, for Venereal Diseases,and for Massage, Electrical and Light Treatment. TheAnatomical, Pathological, and Materia MedicaMuseums are open to all students of the school.The usual registrarships and house appointments

are open to male and female students.By a scheme for the concentration of the teaching

of the preliminary and intermediate subjects of thecurriculum, which has the support of the LondonUniversity, an arrangement has been made by theWestminster School for the teaching of these subjectsat King’s College. Students, however, may join theWestminster Medical School as formerly and maycompete for Entrance Scholarships as heretofore.

LONDON (ROYAL FREE HOSPITAL) SCHOOL OF

MEDICINE FOR WOMEN, 8, Hunter-street, Brunswick-square, W.C.-The fee for the medical course for thedegrees of the University of London and for thediplomas of the Royal Colleges of England and forother qualifications is £240 in five instalments. Thissum includes library and laboratory fees. Arrange-ments are made for pre-medical courses in Chemistryand Physics, which are included in these fees.The Royal Free Hospital contains 240 beds. The

Hospital also has large Casualty and Out-patientDepartments, and Departments for Special Diseases.A new and specially equipped block contains theObstetrical and Gynaecological Unit which, with theMarlborough Maternity Department, controls 68beds. A Maternity District is attached to the Unit.Students also attend the in-patient and out-patientpractice of the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital,Cancer Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children, GreatOrmond-street, National Hospital for Paralysed andEpileptic, South London Hospital, and Royal LondonOphthalmic Hospital.

Courses are arranged for the Primary FellowshipExamination of the College of Surgeons; also fordental students in conjunction with the Royal LondonDental Hospital, Leicester-square.

Many other resident posts in London andelsewhere are also open to them.The School buildings have been entirely rebuilt in

recent years, and there are spacious, well-equippedlaboratories, which afford every facility for efficiencyof teaching and practical work in all departments.

There are residential chambers at 8, Hunter-street,25, Gordon-square, 16, Brunswick-square, 5, Mecklen-burgh-square, and 36, Tavistock-square, and theWarden can be consulted on the subject of otherresidences for students. UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM.

To return to the curriculums of the Universities, ;there are six English provincial universities providinga full course for the medical student.Two Diplomas, one Licence, and nine degrees are

conferred-viz., the Diploma in Public Health,Diploma in Psychiatry, the Licence in Dental Surgery,and the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor ofSurgery, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery,Doctor of Surgery, Bachelor of Hygiene, Doctor ofHygiene, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, and Master ofDental Surgery.

For the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelorof Surgery there are four professional examinations.The subjects of the First Examination are-Elemen-tary Biology and Organic Chemistry. The subjectsof the Second Examination are-Anatomy andPhysiology. The subjects for the Third Examinationare-Materia Medica and Pharmacy, Pharmacology,Medical Jurisprudence, Public Health, and Pathologyand Elementary Bacteriology. The subjects of theFourth Examination are-Medicine, Clinical Medi-cine, Surgery and Clinical Surgery, Operative Surgery,Midwifery and Gynaecology, Therapeutics, Psycho-logical Medicine, and Diseases of the Skin, of theThroat, Nose, and Ear, and of Children, and Ophthal-mology. It is required that at least one of the fiveyears of professional education shall be spent inattendance at the University College of Medicine,Newcastle-upon-Tyne.For the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master of

Surgery a candidate must not be less than 24 yearsof age. He must also have obtained the degrees ofBachelor of Medicine and Surgery of the Universityof Durham and must have been engaged for at leasttwo years subsequently to the date of admission tothese degrees in research work, or in attendance onthe practice of a recognised hospital, or in the navalor military services, or in medical or surgical practice.The candidate for the M.D. degree may present anessay or undergo a special examination in the Theoryand Practice of Medicine. The subjects of examina-tion for the M.S. are :-Principles and Practice ofSurgery, Surgical Pathology, Surgical Anatomy,Surgical Operations, Clinical Surgery.

Doctor of Medicine (without residence).-The Uni-versity of Durham has instituted a special examina.tion whereby the degree of Doctor of Medicine may beobtained without residence. Candidates shall not beunder 40 years of age and shall have been in activepractice for 15 years as registered medical prac-titioners. They shall produce certificates of moralcharacter from three registered members of themedical profession. The fee will be 50 guineas, ofwhich 20 guineas will be retained if the candidate failsto satisfy the examiners.

Doctor of Surgery.-The University of Durhamgrants the Degree of Doctor of Surgery. Candidatesfor this degree must be registered medical prac-titioners, and not less than 24 years of age. Theymust devote three years, subsequently to obtaininga registrable qualification, to the study of Surgeryand ancillary subjects. One at least of the threeyears must be spent in the University. The candi-date must submit to the Professor of Surgery thecourse of study he proposes to follow, and this course-must be approved by the Board of the Faculty ofMedicine. One year shall be devoted mainly to workin the departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Patho-logy and Bacteriology, and the candidate mustsubmit evidence of having so worked. Not less thansix months of another year must be spent as resident.surgeon in a recognised teaching hospital, and therest of the year in the study of surgery in a recog-nised medical centre. Not less than six months ofone of the three years must be spent in surgical studyabroad. The fee for the examination is £20, and thefee for the degree is £10.

Candidates for any of the above degrees, diplomas,or licence, must give at least 28 days’ notice to"Professor Howden, Registrar, College of Medicine,-Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In the case of the M.D.(essay) examination candidates must send in theiressays before the lst of April.
