Medical Spanish Workshop Topic: Triage January 21, points (Academic/Workshop) Who are we? Welcome to Medical Spanish Bienvenidos a Medicina en Espaol. Welcome to Medical Spanish. Espaol es el segundo lengua ms popular del mundo y 54 millones de hispanos quienes pronto sern tus pacientes. Spanish is the second most popular language in the world and almost 54 million hispanics that can be your patients soon. Its not that Scary! Doubts and fears can easily come and dissuade you from continuing in learning medical spanish. Don't be demotivated by this, no one is born speaking spanish. It is all about practice, repetition, and your dedication to the language. Spoiler: You wont learn everything here. This workshop is a great tool to help you learn the principles of medical spanish, but there is no way that the workshop, by itself, can supplement all the necessary information. You will NOT be fluent when you leave. We recommend that you commit time to self study outside of the workshop, or even enroll in a Medical Spanish Class, here at Baylor. SPA Dr. Irom & Dr. Hardin Charla in the Languages Department Workshop Goals 1. Show you how to interact with Spanish-speaking patients 2. Understand basics of Hispanic culture 3. Learn basic medical spanish terminology and grammar 4. Play fun games to solidify the information Brainstorm: Hispanic Culture What do you think of? Stereotypes The most common Stereotypes 1. All hispanics are Mexican. 2. All hispanics are tan." 3. Hispanics are on the lower socioeconomic scale. 4. All Hispanics are illegal immigrants. 5. Hispanics are less educated. Informal vs. Formal Language In spanish, and in most latin based languages, there exists both an informal and formal method of speech. Informal speech is used when talking with your friends, people you are close with, and relatives of the same age group. Formal speech is used when addressing someone older than you, someone you are unfamiliar with, or to simply express respect and be polite. T vs. Usted The most common example of formal vs. informal speech is Usted formal speech when talking to someone older or in a position of respect/authority Tiene usted hambre? Are you hungry? T informal speech, when talking to a younger person, friend, etc. T quieres ir a la playa? Do you want to go to the beach? It is difficult to translate into English because English simply uses you for both formal and informal speech. It might help comparing formal speech in Spanish (Usted) as referring to an individual as Sir, or Mrs./Ms., in English.
