Royal Perth Hospital – who are we?In 2020, Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) remains a vibrant 450 bed teaching hospital. The hospital continues to build on its strong tradition of excellence, not only in the provision of high-quality clinical care, education and research, but also in fostering the unique RPH culture – a culture that encourages students to not only work hard and be dedicated learners, but to always support each other. This is evident in RPH’s current Medical Educators, who have developed the State’s first and best JMO wellbeing program which has been embraced by junior medical staff.RPH is home to quaternary level trauma services (comprising the State Major Trauma Centre) and retains a substantial tertiary workload across most medical and surgical specialities within the Perth metropolitan area. There are prospects of exposure to almost all facets of medicine and surgery, including paediatrics and obstetrics/gynaecology. Several country rotations are also available at sites such as Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital, Bunbury Regional Hospital and Hedland Health Campus.

Royal Perth Hospital – what can we offer?• Work at a Hospital with the longest established tertiary

teaching program in Western Australia.• A site of active research engagement.• A place where senior clinicians love to teach and bring

out the best in their Junior Medical Officers (JMOs).• A place where junior doctor wellbeing is high on

the agenda.

How about some specifics:Formal education programsCareer streaming, including Basic Physician Training and Basic Surgical ProgramOpportunities for research and audit, including prospective rotations in Service ImprovementA robust junior doctor wellbeing programMentoring programsActive junior doctor engagement with senior staff and ExecutiveWork not only at Royal Perth and Bentley hospitals, but also at many other metropolitan and country sitesInnovative ICT initiatives providing a platform for education, teaching, rostering etc.

Formal education programsEducation at RPH is driven by the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Department. Our programs are robust and ever evolving, constantly being modified and improved to suit junior doctor needs in response to direct feedback from our JMOs. There is weekly quarantined time for intern teaching.Resident Medical Officer teaching is led by a busy workshop series, where practical clinical skills can be obtained and consolidated. Those who are on the cusp of transitioning to registrar status are also supported by Step Up programs conducted throughout the year, which provide guidance about how to take that next step in your career and training. The hospital continues to hold weekly Grand Rounds, where hospital departments take turns in presenting cutting edge clinical developments and research.

RPH is also highly regarded for its expertise in training the physicians and surgeons of the future. The Basic Physician Training Program has consistently seen high success rates in professional examinations, with candidates invariably being amongst the best in the State and country.RPH is the first hospital in WA to introduce a Basic Surgical Program, in which JMOs who wish to pursue a surgical career have a formalised teaching and training path. This program has been well received and is already highly regarded and extremely popular.

Research and auditRPH has been the home of Nobel Prize winning research and maintains an active research community. This comprises of both clinical research and basic science research, with the RPH Research Foundation located onsite. Junior doctors are actively encouraged to participate in audit activities. During rotations every intern and RMO rotation may be given an opportunity to present their audit/research to a larger hospital community. From PGY2 onwards, junior doctors can apply for Service Improvement rotations, where a full term is spent identifying areas within the hospital in which clinical care, research or otherwise can be streamlined or improved. This can offer excellent opportunities for developing sophisticated skills, as well as making a genuine difference to our health system at a level beyond the individual patient.

Page 5: Medical Student Information Package 2021 Internship

Junior doctor wellbeing/junior doctor engagementRPH has the first, well established, and arguably most robust Wellbeing Program in the State. Our program (led by Rich Read) is based on the recognition that whilst doctors are great at looking after other people, they are not always so good at looking after themselves. Our Wellbeing Program provides an environment in which junior doctors can seek help, guidance or simply just a friendly chat from someone who recognises the stresses and uncertainties that can go along with being a new doctor. The JMO Liaison Committee meets regularly and is a forum in which JMOs can sit in the same room as senior clinicians, as well as Hospital Executive, and discuss everyday issues which affect their work and welfare. This Committee has been a great success and substantial changes have been driven by actions from our JMOs. The hospital wants to hear from you about how it can keep building and improving. The RPH Mentoring Program has been very well received and is another useful mechanism by which interns can discuss difficult circumstances or simply seek advice about how to tackle a problem.

Royal Perth Hospital – lifestyle and transportWherever you choose to work as an intern, you will likely have rotations which are busy or challenging. At RPH, you will know that you are being supported. You may be busy, but you will be actively learning and becoming a better and more experienced doctor, in an institution that has become renowned for its expertise in training the best.Although, it’s not all about work. The RMO Society at RPH is active and promotes a busy social schedule. You may have already been to the famous Milligan’s Bar for a catch up after work on Fridays. But wait – there’s more:

An annual RMO BallA comfortable JMO common room, with regular snacks/morning teas (and coffee), as well as Foxtel, computers and newspapersA host of other social activities coordinated by your RMO Society representatives.

For those who want even more, the RPH Staff Amenities Fund will provide access to a well-equipped gym, including fitness classes, a pool, tennis and squash courts, and showers and changing facilities.

Page 6: Medical Student Information Package 2021 Internship

What about getting to and from work?RPH is conveniently located at the eastern end of the Perth CBD. It is adjacent to the McIver train station and is on the regular (and free) CAT bus route. For those who prefer to drive to work, parking is made available to all JMOs in an undercover multistorey carpark. Facilities are also available for those who wish to cycle to work. carpark. Facilities are also available for those who wish to cycle to work.
