Serious complications, such as febrile seizures and febrile seizure epilepticus, can arise from primary infection with HHV-6B. In our studies of HHV-6B entry, we have identified its entry receptor, CD134, and the viral ligand, glycoprotein (g)H/gL/gQ1/gQ2. We also have defined the detailed binding process and elucidated the binding domains of a novel receptor/ligand pair. We hope our findings will contribute to the elucidation of HHV-6B pathogenesis (Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2013; J Virol. 2014). The Kusunoki Campus-based Faculty of Medicine emerged from the re-organization of the Prefectural Technical College of Medicine established in 1944, which subsequently became the Hyogo Prefectural College of Medicine (1946), and the Kobe Prefectural College of Medicine (1952). It provides students with opportunities to acquire knowledge of medical ethics as well as basic clinical and medical techniques, while encouraging them to be competent, conscientious medical doctors. The Myodani Campus-based Faculty of Health Sciences was born from the School of Nursing attached to the Hyogo Prefectural College of Medicine, which was originally established in 1959. The Department has 4 major courses: Nursing, Medical Technology, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. The Graduate School of Medicine aims to drive advanced and creative interdisciplinary research and train the future leaders of biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, and medical administration. It focuses on training specialists who can identify the cause of medical problems out of complex factors and manage them for the health and welfare of humanity. The Department of Biomedical Sciences offers an opportunity for students who have majored in various fields other than medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine to acquire the core aspects of genome science and its applications. Ultimately such individuals will become researchers or teachers who will contribute to yet further advancement in these fields. Infectious diseases being studied here include herpesvirus, viral hepatitis, influenza, and norovirus.Also, the project, “Collaborative Research on Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases in Indonesia” will carry out cooperative activities with Airlangga University, Indonesia starting in April 2015, supported by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
Established in 2014, the Center for Advancement of Community Medicine (CACM) aims to train health-care professionals who can provide regional medical services within Hyogo Prefecture. Through collaboration with Hyogo Prefecture, the Center offers coherent educational training to medical doctors and staff members before and after graduating from the Kobe University School of Medicine. The Center also collaborates closely with the Hyogo Regional Medical Support Center (HRMSC), which has its office adjacent to the CACM. For health-care specialists and prospective specialists receiving scholarships from Hyogo Prefecture (students and graduates of not only Kobe University but also related universities), both centers work together to provide support for research, education and careers in regional medical services within Hyogo Prefecture, including remote area hospitals. The goal for both centers is to improve the uneven distribution of health-care specialists within Hyogo Prefecture.
