Get to know about the National Disability Insur-
ance Scheme
Thomas Banks has grown up with cerebral palsy and is a per-
former, writer and disability advocate. At this free event at the
Yarram Recreation Reserve from 4.30pm to 6.00pm on Mon-
day, 14 August, Thomas will be telling his story of the suc-
cesses and challenges of the NDIS so far.
The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age
of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasona-
ble and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life and
is the new way of providing support for people with a disability,
their families and carers in Australia.
Wellington Shire Council General Manager Community & Culture
Glenys Butler says, “The roll out of the NDIS began on 1 July
2016 and is being introduced in stages around the country over
the next three years to ensure it is successful and sustainable.
“It is due to be rolled out across Wellington Shire in January 2019
and we need to start thinking about what it means for people with
a disability, for services and for our communities and how we can
start getting ready. This forum will give people the opportunity to
find out more about it and ask questions.”
Existing Commonwealth and state-based services and support
will continue until eligible people start to receive support from the
NDIS.
Thomas is a great inspiration and a must see, so get in quick to
secure your seat. To book call Leanne Wishart on 1300 366 244
or email [email protected]. Bookings close 5pm
Thursday 10 August 2017.

Yarram Carers Monthly Lunch
Taking a short break from looking after someone to do the things you want or need to do is really important. If you are helping to care for a friend or family member who has a mental illness, long-term illness or who is frail and elderly, you may be eligible for support through the Latrobe Community Health Service Carer Programs.
“Many carers often put their own needs on hold while looking after someone else. We want to remind people that help and support is available locally, including respite,” said Alison Caldwell, Carer Support Coordinator at Latrobe Community Health Service.
“We can offer carers a chance to take a short break from their role by taking on caring duties and providing carers with an opportunity to rest, socialise and recharge their batteries,” continued Alison.
Registration is easy and there is no cost for any of the services provided through Latrobe Community Health Service carer programs.
“We have a number of events coming up that will give carers an opportunity to get out of the house and be sociable among people who understand what they’re going through, too.”
Events include a Christmas in July lunch in Sale, A theatre matinee in August in Warragul and a day trip to Walhalla in September.
For more information or to register for support from the Carer Programs’ team, contact Latrobe Community Health Service on 1800 242 696 and ask to speak to Alison or Elaine.
