Medilink UK strongly advocates that businesses should have a central role in the industrial strategy and any associated processes for innovation, given they invest heavily in research and development, have important applicable skill sets, and have unique specialist market knowledge.

Medilink UK believes that the core principles in its formal response to the Accelerated Access Review (AAR) are equally applicable within this response to the Industrial Strategy Green Paper. The main areas from the ten pillars within the Green Paper considered key for the continued success of the Life Sciences Sector are:

• Business growth and innovation commercialisation;• Skills;• Internationalisation;• Cultivating Digital Health as a world leading sector;• Supporting the best structures to bring sectors together.

Business growth and innovation commercialisationThe Life Sciences sector in the UK is extremely diverse, with SMEs making up 78%1 of the Industry across many different market segments; from orthopaedics, diagnostics, and assistive technologies in the Med Tech sector, and small molecule drugs through to cell therapies in the Biopharmaceutical sector. Furthermore, each of these market segments has different underpinning science and technology, as well asdifferent routes to market, regulation

our members / Industry, we are pleased to announce Medilink UK's formal response to the Government’s Industrial Strategy, a plan to shape the future via a strategy fit for the modern economy and post-Brexit Britain.

Following the comments and views that we gathered from

• Create a more holistic systems infrastructure framework to fast track innovation, whilst recognising and respecting the goals and aspirations of key stakeholders;• Provide an evaluation and adoption system that can accommodate the wide scope of Medical Technologies, whilst avoiding having to re-prove product efficacy & safety in every Trust;• Expand NICE’s medical technology evaluation to include a process for accelerating the adoption of recommendations and ensuring it is more integrated into the broader innovation landscape;• Ensure appropriate infrastructure

is in place to support the Life Sciences eco-system to avoidwasteful competition for resources - existing organisationsshould be fully utilised and aninclusive part of initiatives to stimulate and convert innovationsinto practice;

• Ensure wealth creation remainsa core remit of the AHSN’s andthe Innovation Exchangesreferred to in the AAR are collaborative entities, managedlocally with industry led associations;

• Incentivise contracts with SMEsby introducing mandatory quotawhere public funding is beingcommitted – to resolve theongoing conflict between reducing the number of suppliersinto the NHS, which favours large corporates, and the need tosupport SMEs and drive economic growth;

• Ensure NHS adoption and procurement are closely linkedthrough shared risk and acommitment to purchase at theend of any adoption process -AHSN’s should be refocused onthe wealth agenda and targetedwith instigating procurementsuccesses and given the teeth toachieve this.

and reimbursement. Consequently, the achievement of business growth will depend on many factors that cut across at least three of the pillars in the green paper (Pillars 1: Investing in science, research and innovation, 4: Supporting businesses to start and grow, and 9: Driving growth across the whole country).

Too often in the past valuable resources have been wasted re-creating activity rather thanstrengthening those institutions with the experience and capabilities, which in turn has created a cluttered innovation infrastructure. Furthermore, it is critical to ensure that initiatives encompassing innovation within the NHS are not separate from those involving industry; they are unequivocally part of the same eco-system and reap greater and faster reward collaboratively than they do separately.

relationships with a wide range of manufacturers in the medical sector and have built up an experienced team of specialist medical translators to support them on global projects in more than 200 languages.

It’s an area that my team and I are seeing a lot of interest in and growth, and therefore Med-Tech Innovation Expo was a logical fit for us. We plan to further develop our medical translation services this year, so where better place to do this?

We are also members of Medilink and they provided the catalyst for getting us involved: we will be sharing Stand 50 with them and other members.

For me, MTI Expo, is a great opportunity to get a finger on the pulse of the med-tech sector – sorry for the medical pun! I’m interested in finding out more about the challengesmanufacturers face when exporting and growing their businesses overseas, and these insights will help us ensure our services are closely aligned with the sector.

Translations are often viewed as ‘another thing to do’ on the endless ‘to do’ list for a company launching a product into an international market; but success, or failure, could rest on the quality of their translations. There are key quality, compliance and patient safety considerations, but also user experience factors to bear in mind. Our clients report increased acceptance of products when user information and marketing material is translated into native languages.

Given the stringent regulations around medical product information, when choosing a translation partner it is essential to find a specialist provider. My advice would be to expect at the minimum specialist medical translators; access to local in-market experts to capture specialist knowledge; quality standard procedures in place; and the use of Translation Memory to ensure accuracy and consistency.

I think it’s an exciting time to be expanding into international markets, especially For the UK and Irish med-tech sectors. Although Brexit will have an impact - no doubt many at MTI Expo will have opinions on this - there are great opportunities to be had.

but there are still some challenges which need to be faced, says yinka Makinde, Programme Director at DigitalHealth.London.

“It’s no surprise that the demand for healthcare is outstripping our ability to supply services, forcing us to look at new models of care and ways to deliver them,” says Makinde. “We need technology to help improve the way we communicate, whether that’s healthcare professional to patient, patient to patient, or healthcare professional to healthcare professional.

“There’s a big push now in the NHS around ‘channel shifting’. With a large demand on A&E and GP practices, we’re running out of doctors and we are not going to be producing enough GPs over the next 10 years to be able to support the system.

“So, there’s a huge drive to channel shift to other healthcare professionals, like community-based nurses, pharmacists, etc. What this means is that some of the ongoing monitoring

"However, while the ability for organisations to innovate in today’s digital healthcare space is vital, implementing new ideas can be challenging.

“There are hundreds of ideas, technologies and apps out there,” says Makinde, “but many aren’t addressing the real needs in the system. Part of our role at DigitalHealth.London is to help that process, to scout for or sign post to digital solutions that the health and care system, patients and the public can benefit from.

“We’ve interacted with over 250 companies over the last year. Many have great ideas, some have developed compelling propositions, but few have managed to scale their innovations across the NHS. They also struggle to figure out the best business models, and how they’ll

make money or sustain themselves. Access to funding continues to be a challenge not just for the innovators, but also on the healthcare providers’ side. You might have the most engaged clinician who likes your product, but they may struggle to access the support they need to back fill them to get involved in the project and sustain it across the trust, beyond the one ward or department.

“We’re committed to helping overcome some of these hurdles, through raising buyers’ awareness about the digital market and supporting transformation, and through our one-year accelerator programme for suppliers, helping them to scale and find the right opportunities. We do this both directly and by working with our national bodies, such as NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), Office for Life Sciences, NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) and NHS England.”

Makinde adds: “Digital success relies on people – we need to invest in people in the NHS, not only giving them capability and confidence, but also giving them permission to actually take calculated risks, because inevitably digital innovation is risky. We need to invest in individuals who are desperate to transform the system, because they are the future and the ones who will drive the digital transformation in the NHS."
