another subject that we examine is one of utmost concern for the present generation – cyber security in the travel industry. Since most travel arrangements now take place over the internet, the incidence of fraud, identity theft, phishing attacks and spam are rising steadily. it has become imperative for travel agents and travel companies to take steps to safeguard their users against potential losses (whether financial or otherwise) and for users to educate themselves about safe practices when it comes to online booking transactions.

Two important sectors that are projected to reach new highs in the coming years are those of renewable energy and water segment. renewable energy has become the need of the hour, not only due to the rising costs of fossil fuels, but also owing to growing environmental concerns. This particular sector has seen reasonable development in india, but the scope for further growth is massive. Similarly, the need and demand for clean, usable water is also increasing with increasing population and requirements. From water supply for industrial, irrigation and residential purposes to water treatment and water purification, the segment is pervaded with investment opportunities.

in the last ten years, the world has wit-nessed unprecedented developments in the field of technology and communica-tion. The internet in particular has trans-formed the way human beings commu-nicate,, shop, work, play, do business, and essentially, live. While social media and search engines are the most browsed websites, e-commerce portals are quickly catching on. and among the e-commerce sites, travel portals are fast garnering more traffic and business. These travel sites may offer everything from infor-mation on tourist destinations, sugges-tions based on preferences and budgets, reviews and rankings of different hotels and destinations, and most importantly, airline, train, hotel and taxi booking facili-ties, among other things.

Statistics indicate that travel sites have seen a 10% hike in traffic in the last year alone. 57% of all travel reservations are made online, with the numbers being

much higher in developed countries. ac-cording to rezdy, on average, any travel agency that took their business online saw a 73% hike in revenue. by 2016, online travel sales are expected to grow to $523 billion. This data makes apparent the increasing number of online trans-actions being made for travel bookings. but what is not so apparent is the risk consumers are exposed to when trans-acting online.

Stealing of personal information and identity theftExperts state that sharing of information on travel websites has not only given cy-ber criminals access to a person’s finan-cial records and credit card numbers, but has also allowed identity theft criminals and data thieves to discern people’s PaN card, social security and other identity card numbers based on their zip codes, dates of birth and genders. Moreover, user data is hacked and used by third

parties posing as reputable organization for phishing attacks, and soliciting personal information such as passwords and bank account details.according to reports, in 2013, a total of 550 million identities were breached; a 62% increase from 2012.

www.hitex.co.in 07

HackingThere have also been cases of hacking wherein cyber criminals have gained unautho-rized access to the databases of these sites and stolen information. This reveals the deep cracks in the websites’ security measures. While many sites claim that they are hosted on secure server connections, users have now discovered that this is something that they must opt for. Even a small breakdown of the firewalls or the secure connec-tions that users commonly see as “https”, would mean that the information can be infiltrated.

Current Scenarioall these factors reveal the lack of security in several travel and tourism sites. With the integrity of the system being compromised every day, and information of sensitive na-ture being disclosed to unwanted parties. Travel sites are now adopting more stringent measures to prevent instances of hacking such as strong infrastructures and securing networks through the implementation of layers/ policies. Such countermeasures can greatly improve the security of user information stored on website databases and re-duce instances of hacking. However, despite the efforts being made to keep information shared online confidential, and to improve security on websites, there is still a long way to go to ensure all transactions are 100% protected.

india is the second largest water consuming nation in the world. This combined with the growing population, urbanization, and the rising need for water for purposes ranging from drinking to cleaning establishes that demand for water will only keep increasing in the coming years. The demand for water in india stood at 710 trillion litres in 2010. This number is expected to rise to 843 trillion litres by 2025, and a whopping 1180 trillion li-tres by 2050. On the other hand, in 1951, with a population of 361 million, the per capita water availability was 5177 cubic metres, which became 1816 m3 in 2001 and 1544 m3 in 2011. Thus, there is ample scope for investment in the water segment in india in the domestic, agricultural as well as industrial sector.

Factors contributing to increasing water usage and demand There are several factors that contribute to increasing demand for water in india and which are proving to be strong drivers of increased water usage.

Population increase and urbanization The most significant cause of water usage increase is the rise in population and in per capita requirement of water. The anticipated growth of population from 1.2 billion in 2010 to an estimated 1.6 billion in 2030 will lead to direct increase in water usage.

Large scale urbanization will also contribute to this. increased urbanization from 30% to 50% will create demand aggregation in several regions of india.

Per Capita Income Increase Over the next few decades, indian GdP is expected to grow at solid pace. This will cause per capita income to rise from $468 to $1,73,66 by 2050, thereby resulting in lifestyle

changes and an increased per capita need for water. For instance, the average water consumption in the US is 582 litres/day/person, whereas it is only 90 litres/day/per-son in india, indicating that the higher the income, the higher the water usage will be.

Industrial growth With massive industrial expansion, the need and usage of water will also invariably increase. This is especially true for power, steel, and other heavy industries.

Increasing agricultural and irrigation needs a growing population and increased spending capacity has consistently raised the need for food and produce in the country. This will lead to an augmented demand for water resources for agricultural and irrigation purposes.

all these factors point to not only the reason behind the growing water demand in india, but also the opportunities in the water segment.

Opportunities in the Water Sector

The above graph demonstrates the water requirement in india over the years, segre-gated according to sectors. The requirements, as is apparent, will continue to rise.

The opportunity sectors in the indian water industry can be divided as follows:

Municipal o Water supply and sanitation o Treatment and purification o Pumping and water transportation o Waste water treatment and recycling

www.hitex.co.in 09

Page 10: MEET IN INDIAapart from being a vacation spot, the education tourism industry in Vikarabad is fast growing. There are several Engineering, Polytechnic, iTi, business, Medical and dental

Industrial/Building/Institutional o Hospitals, hotels, malls o Process water treatment o Waste water treatment and recycling

Residential o Home purifiers o bottled water

Water supply There are several opportunities in the sector of water supply. Water supply and efficient use and reuse of water particularly in industrial processes for high pollut-ing sectors, such as cement, pulp, paper and equipment for water saving and water recycling is one of them. another avenue for participation is the provision of better design, manufacture and installation of various types of rainwater harvesting systems to cater to the inherent and growing needs of the population to conserve and reuse rain water.

The water supply investment requirement for the period of 2012-31 is pegged at $8.67 trillion, of which a lion’s share belongs to water supply and treatment, particularly in the irrigation sector. The government’s spending on irrigation in india is US$17.5 bn in FY2012. india has planned a major thrust in irrigation in its Xii five year plan. Surface water i.e. water received from dams and canals is typically priced at a fixed rate per hectare. The flow of this water depends on timelines set by the water authorities. However, the timing or quantum of release may or may not be suitable for all crops and hence farmers end up tapping groundwater also in addition. This creates opportu-nities for those looking to address this needs-gap.

Water and Waste Water Treatment Segment The indian water and waste water market is valued at 9 billion Euros, of which the wa-ter treatment industry is valued at 1 billion Euros. While there are several companies engaged in the industry, there is scope for new and emerging players, particularly for high-tech water treatment plants design and technology. Opportunities in the sector include:

• installation/commissioningandservicingofwatertreatmentplants • hugeunbrandedwaterpurifiermarketoffilters,UVandROsystems • Designandengineeringconsultingforwaterprojects

Bottled Water and Water Purifiers More than 100 million people in india live in areas of poor water quality. Many peo-ple in india do not have access to clean, potable water, making it necessary for them

to purchase bottled water or water purifiers. increased health consciousness, more requirement for high quality water, increased disposable income, and easy availability of bottled water has made india into one of the fastest growing market for bottled water. The sale of bottled water grew from $189 million in 2003 to $599 million in 2008. The market was valued at$60 billion in 2013, and business Standard estimates that the market will grow at a CaGr of 22 percent, to reach rs.160 billion in 2018. There are several domestic and international players in the market including Coca-Co-la, Pepsi, Nestle, Mount Everest, Manikchand, kingfisher, and Himalayan. Neverthe-less, research suggests that there is still space for local players to enter the market, considering the steadily rising demand.

The water purifier segment has seen similar growth, although not quite as much as bottled water. The market is poised to grow at a CaGr rate of 23%, and there is ample scope for new companies and suppliers in the market. The competition among the vendors in the market is centered on the quality, durability, type of purifier, price sensitivity and the after sales services offered. The top 5 vendors in the market are Eureka Forbes, Hindustan Unilever, ion Exchange, kent rO, and TaTa Chemical; other prominent vendors include 3M, adhunik, apex, aqua fresh, Expert, Godrej, Panasonic, and Whirlpool.

Current and Future Scenario The Euro-india research Centre has stated that by the year 2024, demand for water in the country will be so high that the supply would need to increase considerably as well. This therefore creates opportunities for companies in this sector. The indian water industry is worth over $30 billion industry. Understanding this grave needs gap in the water industry, several local and international companies have already invested

here. There is $107 million worth of private equity invested in the segment, which almost doubled from $57 million within a period of one year. Some of the companies that have recognized these opportunities and have become key players in the mar-ket include acciona agua, befesa-acqua, Cascal, Hydro-comp, Manila water, iL&FS Water, ion Exchange, iVrCL Ltd., Jain irrigation, L&T Ltd., Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd, and ramky infrastructure.

The future looks very promising for companies that intent to venture into the water segment in india. apart from external factors such as rising demand, there has also been a thrust at the policy level to encourage private sector participation as a means to improve performance delivered by publicly owned utilities. The Xii 5-Year Plan envisages a deviation from engineering construction centric approach to multidisci-plinary participatory approach and to bridge the gap between potential creation and utilization with prioritize investment in command area development and manage-ment program.

There is great untapped potential in the market, and various avenues that can be explored. Some additional opportunities include, but are not limited to:

• river interlinking schemes which will divert water from “water excess areas’ to ‘dry parts of our country’ • Water Table and rainwater Conservation Projects at district level • desalination projects • Water supply and treatment projects at urban and rural levels • addressing the power shortage needs for water projects through solar pumpbased water supply and treatment schemes • Sewage and industrial waste water recycling projects • Public – Private Partnership Projects through bOOT / bOT route

as the industrial outlook in india witnesses exceptional growth, the need for cheap, easily harvested and accessible sources of en-ergy also increases manifold. india is currently the fourth largest importer of oil and the 15th largest importer of petroleum prod-ucts and LNG globally. To reduce india’s growing reliance on fossil fuels and petroleum products, it is essential to increase the pro-duction and uptake of renewable energy sources in the country.

The Nda government has recognized this necessity and has rolled out several programs and incentives towards ensuring sustain-able growth in india’s renewable energy sector. recently, it re-vised its target of 20,000 MW of renewable energy to 1,00,000 MW by the year 2022. during the Paris Climate Change Convention on intended Nationally determined Contribution (iNdC), india drew an assurance that by 2030, 40% of india’s total power capacity will be generated through renewable resources.

current Scenario Presently, india is operating the largest renewable capacity ex-pansion program in the world. at 37,000 MW, renewable energy accounts for close to 15 per cent of the total power capacity in the country. Since 2010 (when the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission became active), the growth of solar power in india has grown from 2 MW in 2010 to 4,200 MW at present. in wind energy, india is the world’s fifth largest producer at 24,000 MW, which accounts for nearly 70% of the installed capacity.

Renewable Energy in IndIa

Government’s role, Policies and Programs The government is playing an active role in promoting the adoption of renewable energy resources by offering various incentives, such as generation-based in-centives (Gbis), capital and interest subsidies, viability gap funding, concessional finance, fiscal incentives, etc.

the national Solar Mission The Cabinet approved the setting up of 15,000 MW of Grid-connected Solar PV power projects under the National Solar Mission. The implementation will take place through the NTPC/ NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) in three tranches – Tranche-i producing 3000 MW through bundling with Unallocated Coal based thermal power and fixed levellised tarrifs; Tranche-ii producing 5000 MW through support from the government, and Tranche-iii producing 7000 MW with-out any financial support from the government.

The National Solar Mission aims to promote the development and use of solar energy for power generation and other uses, with the ultimate objective of making solar energy compete with fossil-based energy options. it also aims to reduce the cost of solar power generation in the country through long-term policy, large scale deployment goals, aggressive r&d and the domestic production of critical raw materials, components and products.

international Solar alliance Prime Minster Narendra Modi launched the international Solar alliance at the CoP21Climate Conference in Paris, which allows for mutual cooperation among 121 countries that lie between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The prime motive of the iSa is to work together to address the energy needs of emerg-ing markets as well as to increase their solar energy production.

FDi Policies The country would need $200 billion of investment to meet the target, 70 per cent of which is likely to come from foreign investors. Hence, the government has creat-ed several policies to encourage foreign investment in renewable energy projects. Towards this end, the government has set up a dedicated financial institution – the

indian renewable Energy development agency which is responsible for the pro-motion, development and extension of financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency/ conservation projects. Foreign direct investment (Fdi) up to 100% is permitted under the automatic route for renewable energy generation and distribution projects subject to provisions of The Electricity act, 2003.

Guidelines for Green large-area Developments by Mnre The package of incentives (except wind) includes fiscal concessions such as 80% ac-celerated depreciation, concessional custom duty for specific critical components, excise duty exemption, income tax exemption on profits for power generation etc. in wind power projects.

other Measures The enactment of the National offshore Wind Energy Policy is another important step that the government has taken in this direction. Setting up of solar parks, es-tablishment of the Solar Energy Corporation of india, provision of central financial assistance for small/ micro hydro power projects, development of power trans-mission network through Green Energy Corridor project, ascertaining tall buildings for roof-top projects, stipulation for 10% renewable energy as mandatory as per the Mission Statement, provision of tax free solar bonds and long tenure loans are some other measures the government has adopted.

Page 17: MEET IN INDIAapart from being a vacation spot, the education tourism industry in Vikarabad is fast growing. There are several Engineering, Polytechnic, iTi, business, Medical and dental

Future Prospects Economic growth, increasing prosperity, a growing rate of urbanization and rising per capita energy consumption has widened access to energy in the country. it is estimated that india’s annual Solar installations will increase by more than four times before 2017 and 10.86 GW of utility-scale solar and grid connected rooftop solar capacity will be added by 2016-17.

The Government of india is aiming to take the total renewable capacity to almost 175 GW by the end of 2022. This includes 60 GW from wind power, 100 GW from solar power, 10 GW from biomass power and 5 GW from small hydro power.

Several private corporations have also ventured into the renewable energy sector. Softbank, bharti Enterprises and Foxconn have announced a joint venture which would invest $20 billion to set up solar power parks in india. The JV aims to pro-duce 20 GW of the 100-GW solar (and 60-GW wind) generation target set by the Prime Minister by 2022. Several other companies in the solar and wind energy sectors have committed 2.95 MW of capacity addition by 2022 which was declared at rE-invest 2015 - the government’s first investment congregation for the clean energy sector.

PashupathyGopalan, President of SunEdison asia Pacific stated that, “Solar is going to get big in this country. There is definitely huge demand for power and the next major step is growth in this sector. We have to see who has the long-term vision to cater to this demand. if incentivized, solar stands to benefit the most from govern-ment’s ‘Make in india’ program”

Various states are also gearing up to meet increased renewable energy goals. Punjab plans to harness its canal network for generation of an estimated 1,000 MW of solar power. Punjab Minister of New and renewable Energy bikramjit Singh Majithiatold business Standard the state has been allocated 20 MW of solar power generation by the government under the pilot project, for which a grant of rs 3 crore per MW would be provided. The cost of canal top solar power generation is rs 10 crore per megawatt. Projects worth 5 MW under the tendering process would be allocated under a build-operate-own (bOO) basis.

While the state has a huge potential for bio mass based power generation due to agrarian economy there is an ample scope for bio mass based power generation. The GOi, according to Majithia, should provide better incentives as farmers burn the bio mass (wheat straw and paddy husk) that is an economical wastage and adds to global warming. The State Electricity regulatory Commissions in andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, kerala, Punjab, Orissa and West bengal have announced preferential tariffs for purchase of power from wind power projects. Furthermore, various states including andhra Pradesh, Telangana, karnataka, and rajasthan have introduced new Solar Policy documents which will be implemented soon. the Flip Side india’s growth prospects in the renewable energy sector look rather promising. Solar power may have got greater policy impetus from the Nda, but the targets set by the government seem to be drawing a lot of criticism for being completely un-attainable.Currently, on an average, the country is adding 1,000 MW of solar power annually. at this rate, 1,00,000 MW in six years will be an amazing feat. “The target trajectory for renewables is stunning and could lead to a complete transformation of the energy sector in the country. Clearly, in the near term, we need to focus on the financials of the distribution companies, transmission constraints, the ability to pass on the true cost, and consumer affordability,” says rupesh agarwal, advisory partner and leader (energy), bdO india LLP.

Page 19: MEET IN INDIAapart from being a vacation spot, the education tourism industry in Vikarabad is fast growing. There are several Engineering, Polytechnic, iTi, business, Medical and dental

For these ambitious goals to be achieved, india will have the assistance of the supporters of “Make in india” campaign.

the road ahead renewable energy is becoming a necessity not only to reduce india’s dependence on foreign oil exports and non-renewable energy as well as to combat rising pollu-tion levels which are a direct result of fossil fuels.

as far as financial viability is concerned, renewable energy is becoming increasingly cost-competitive compared to fossil fuel-based generation. Wind energy equip-ment prices have fallen dramatically due to technological innovation, increasing manufacturing scale and experience curve gains. Prices for solar modules have declined by almost 80% since 2008 and wind turbine prices have declined by more than 25% during the same period.

Clearer policies particularly with regard to Fdis, provision of better financing options, and a more streamlined approach by the government will ensure greater financial feasibility. Enhanced infrastructure and creation of more efficient grid networks as well as intra-state networks can go a long way in making india’s re-newable energy targets a reality.

The Meeting incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MiCE) industry or simply the Meetings industry has seen incredible growth across the globe. Several corporations, manufacturers, distributors and service providers from different sectors are now willing to shell out extra bucks in order to expand their business beyond their domestic terri-tories. This allows them to not only gain access to new markets, but also to gain new experiences, know-how and technologies.

india has quickly caught up with this segment and has started to develop the infra-structure required to cater to it. as per the international Congress and Convention association (iCCa), india holds the 27th position in global ranking and 9th position in the asia Pacific region. it hosted over 142 international meetings in 2013. The industry has grown at over 20% over the last year and growth rate is expected to increase rapidly.
