Honor Code Pledge: I recognize that attending LNC is a privilege, and as a member of this community, I pledge to uphold and promote the pillars of honesty, integrity, respect and responsibility as outlined in the LNC honor code. Together we learn, lead and serve Superintendent Says I recently had the good fortune to meet with several of Lake Norman Charter’s key founders and leaders to learn about LNC’s humble beginning. As someone who values and respects those who invest in education, I was struck when I learned about the commitment of our staff and families during those early days. From parent volunteers who scrubbed gum and grime off of used desks to teachers who had to pack up their classrooms daily as they shared space with a local church, to the founders who put their own homes up for collateral to help to secure the funding to purchase necessary supplies; the unwavering commitment to the students and the success of the school was evident and admirable. As we begin our celebration of LNC’s 20 years of service, I ask that you join me in embracing the motto of Passion, Pride & Promise. Global Diversity and Inclusion -A LNC Strategic Areas of FocusAs w e enter into a new school year, w e are excited toshare new s about our Global Diversity and Inclusion(GDI) Initiative, one of four strategic areas of focus atLNC:

Lake Norman Charter is committed to an environmentthat respects and values the experiences andstrengths of a diverse and inclusive community ofstudents, parents, staff and Board of Directors. Suchdifferences include abilities/disabilities, race, color, ethnicity, gender identity, gender nonconformity, age, religion, language, sexual orientation, socioeconomicstatus, national origin, political aff iliation, and more. Webelieve that cultivating an inclusive learning environmentthat is free of hostility, intimidation or marginalization ofany groups creates shared understanding, aw arenessand the opportunity to contribute positively to our localand global communities.

To give students the best chance for success in ourcurrent fast-paced and increasingly integrated w orld,w e must expose them to experiences and immersethem in situations that expand their aw areness, appreciation, and understanding of cultures, languages, and traditions other than their ow n. Here’s w hat w e aredoing:

Facilitating teacher programming modules thatcreate alignment and understanding of the LNCvalues of diversity and inclusion. All staffmembers received this training.Continuing to develop and deliver consistent,age-appropriate student programming solutionsthat cultivate an aw areness and understandingof diversity and inclusion.Researching, prioritizing and adopting bestpractices that foster and support a diverseschool-w ide community.

MS Gets New Furniture for StudentsLast fall it became apparent that it w as time for arefresh of our classroom furniture at the MS. Some ofthe MS desks and chairs had been serving our studentssince the school began in 1998 and came to us “used”even then! Know ing that desks and chairs for 800students w ould be a huge f inancial outlay and thefurniture decided upon could be w ith us for another 20years, a pilot made sense. Thanks to the generosity ofparents w ho “Invest in Excellence” w e w ere able toorder several dif ferent types of classroom furniture, from the traditional desk/seat combo to the most modernoptions available, and let our teachers experiment. Theythen selected w hat they felt w ould w ork best for theirstyle of teaching and subject matter. The new furniturearrived over the summer and w as w aiting for ourstudents on the f irst day of school. Although the colorsand styles range the gamut, the one thing it all has incommon is f lexibility. With these f lexible seatingarrangements, students might have the opportunity tobe able to w ork alone or as a group, remain stationary, sit, stand, w iggle and spin! Of course, all of this w ill behappening in a manner that w ill encourage students dotheir best w ork.
