1 – MOTORWEEK (ADVENTURE SPORTS OUTDOORS ON 5/27)

Public media seems to be in the spotlight even more lately as President Trump threatens to take away any federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This funding, which is only 0.01% of the federal budget, ensures universal access to our essential services, including in rural and remote areas where commercial broadcast operations are not economically viable.Without this critical seed funding, local stations like WTVP may be forced to go off-air or cut the programs you love and the public services Central Illinois relies on. Central Illinois could lose access to educational content for children, emergency com-munication services, local programming, trusted news and more. This legislation, H.R. 727, was introduced by Representative

Lamborn and would defund the CPB. This legislation mischaracterizes the role of CPB and would have a disas-trous effect on the ability of WTVP to continue to provide the highest quality programming and services to the com-munities we serve. This legislation fails to recognize that nearly 80% of federal funding for CPB goes directly to local stations like WTVP for our work in addressing the unique needs of the communities we serve.WTVP uses this funding to create local programs like At Issue, Consider This, Sound Bites with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, State & Water and local documentaries that no one else is providing our community. These are services that the public values. Time and time again voter surveys have shown that the American public, including majorities of Republicans, Democrats and Independents, support continued federal funding for public broadcasting. A recent poll of Trump voters conducted by Morning Consult covered a broad range of issues, and included the finding that a majority of Trump voters support continued federal funding for public broadcasting at or above current levels. If you feel the same way let your voice be known and contact your legislators to let them know that you oppose this legislation.

WTVP gratefully accepts gifts by will or bequest. For additional information or to notify us of your intentions, please contact Colleen Runkle 309-495-0525.

National Memorial Day ConcertSunday, May 28, 2017, marks the 28th annual broadcast of the NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT, bringing us together as one family of Americans to honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, military families and all those who have given their lives for our country. The concert features acclaimed actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise and an all-star lineup of actors and musicians (to be announced) along with top pops conductor Jack Everly and the National Symphony Orchestra. Show segments include a tribute to the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders, who flew the daring bombing mission that launched the U.S. invasion of Japan after Pearl Harbor; the story of the sacrifices made by Captain Luis Avila and his wife, Claudia, as they courageously face life-changing injuries incurred from an IED bomb blast; and the healing journey of a Gold Star family from the Vietnam era who reach out to support grieving families from recent conflicts. This tribute to our military airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before an audience of hun-dreds of thousands, a broadcast audience of millions and to our troops around the world via American Forces Network. Watch on WTVP at 7:00 – 8:30 PM and an encore performance at 9:00 – 10:30 PM.

Feast It Forward American Masters Series May 2017 on WTVP

Features four documentaries on iconic chefs James Beard, Julia Child, Jacques Pépin and Alice WatersAmerican Masters announced today that Feast it Forward™ has provided major funding for a “chefs flight” of four documentaries on culinary legends James Beard, Julia Child, Jacques Pépin, and Alice Waters, premiering May 2017 on PBS as part of the series’ 31st season. New documentaries American Masters – James Beard: America’s First Foodie and American Masters – Jacques Pépin: The Art of Craft will be paired with encore presentations of American Mas-ters: Julia! America’s Favorite Chef and American Masters: Alice Waters and Her Delicious Revolution, respectively.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the savory stories behind these culinary geniuses to viewers thanks to Feast It Forward’s generous support. Collectively, they set America’s dinner table, and I think people will enjoy seeing the connections between each of these chefs and how we eat today,” said Michael Kantor, executive producer of American Masters.

American Masters – James Beard: America’s First Foodie—Premieres Friday, May 19, 8-9 p.m. on WTVP

Experience a century of food through the life of one man, James Beard (1903-1985). Dubbed the “Dean of American Cookery” by The New York Times, Beard was a Portland, Ore., native who loved and celebrated the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. He spoke of the importance of localism and sustainability long before those terms had entered the vernac-ular. At a time of “all things French,” Beard appreciated what America had to bring to the table, and was the first chef to go on television to teach not only women, but men, how to cook. A cookbook author, journalist, television celebrity and teacher, Beard helped to pioneer and expand the food media industry into the billion-dollar business it is today.

American Masters: Julia! America’s Favorite Chef—Friday, May 19, 9-10 p.m. on WTVP

Celebrate the life and legacy of Julia Child (1912-2004), fondly remembered for introducing French cuisine to American home cooks through her television series – beginning with WGBH’s The French Chef in 1963 – and books. The film tells two love stories: one between Julia and Paul Child, the other between Julia and French food. Originally broadcast in August 2004, the film features previously unseen photos, including several from Paul Child’s personal archive, granted exclusively to the film’s producers. Child was a pioneer in public television’s long tradition of cooking programs, revolutionizing the way America cooks, eats and thinks about food.

American Masters – Jacques Pépin: The Art of Craft—Premieres Friday, May 26, 8-9 p.m. on WTVP

Discover the story of Chef Jacques Pépin (b. December 18, 1935), a young immigrant with movie-star looks, a charm-ing Gallic accent, and a mastery of cooking and teaching so breathtaking he became an early food icon—joining James Beard and Julia Child among the handful of Americans who transformed the way the country views the food world. Not content cooking in French palaces, where he was the personal chef to three French presidents including Charles de Gaulle, Pépin’s American journey took him through the kitchens of Howard Johnson’s, bringing his commitment to great taste, craftsmanship and technique to American popular food. With his landmark cookbooks and television shows, he ushered in a new era in American food culture – a story that continues to unfold.

American Masters: Alice Waters and Her Delicious Revolution—Friday, May 26, 9-10 p.m. on WTVP

Follow Alice Waters (b. April 28, 1944) through a year of seasonal shopping and cooking, and discover both the recipes and vision of an artist and an advocate. She and her now-famous restaurant Chez Panisse became a major force behind the way Americans eat and think about food, launching the explosion of local farmers’ markets and redesigned super-market produce departments. Distressed by the food she saw in public schools, Waters started an organic garden with an integrated curriculum at the Martin Luther King Middle School near her house, an idea inspired by The Garden Project at the San Francisco county jail. The idea of an Edible Schoolyard has now spread across the U.S. – and inspired similar programs worldwide. She is an activist with a flawless palette who has taken her gift for food and turned it into consciousness about the environment and nutrition, and a device for social change.

VICTORIAN SLUM HOUSE takes viewers back to the British slums of the 1800s, where a group of modern day families, couples and individuals recreate life in London’s East End as their forbearers once lived between 1860-1900. Faced with the virtually impossible task of earning enough money to pay the rent and put food on the table, over five episodes the participants experience first-hand the tough living and working conditions endured by the millions that made up the urban poor in Victorian Britain. It’s an eye-opening experience for the participants as they each confront the harsh realities of the past and together lay the ground-work for welfare reform in the 20th Century.

VICTORIAN SLUM HOUSE airs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in May

Nature Dolphins: Spy in the PodWednesday, May 3, 7 p.m.

Infiltrate the world of dolphins as seen by the Spy Creatures from “superpods” to gang rivalries.

The camera eyes of 13 ingenious Spy Creatures, including Spy Dolphin, Spy Nauti-lus and Spy Turtle, capture the dolphin’s “superpod” behavior never filmed before. Infiltrate the social world of dolphins from strange gatherings to gang rivalries.

Plants Behaving Badly – Murder & MayhemWednesday May 3, 9 p.m.

Examine the extraordinary behavior of carnivorous plants, which have been a feature of many a sci-fi film over the years. The reality turns out to be far strang-er than the fiction. See why.

King Charles III on Masterpiece Sunday, May 14, 8 p.m. The hit Broadway show King Charles III is adapted for television. A 2016 Tony nominee for Best Play, King Charles III imagines Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne following Queen Elizabeth’s death. Lauded by the New York Times as a “flat-out brilliant portrait of a monarch in crisis,” the play was critically acclaimed in London and New York. The 90-minute adaptation stars members of the Broad-way cast and reunites the Tony-nominated creative team behind the play: Writer Mike Bartlett adapts from his own script — daringly written in blank verse—and Rupert Goold directs.

Food—Delicious ScienceWednesday, May 17, 24, 31 at 9 p.m.Examine the physics, chemistry and biology that lie hidden in every bite of food we eat. Understanding the deep evolutionary roots of human reactions and cravings for food offers a new way of thinking about our relationship to the modern diet.

The Illness & The Odyssey

4May 6 & 7—Very Berry This weekend, Create chefs incorporate fresh spring berries into decadent desserts and drinks. Vivian Howard develops a recipe for coconut cornbread strawberry shortcake. Jacques Pepin tops off his cheesecake with an apricot and blueberry sauce. Laura Theodore preps tasty vegan blueberry squares. Ellie Krieger helps a multi-tasking mom with breakfast with blueberry-chia overnight oats. And P. Allen Smith makes a refreshing strawberry lemonade.

4May 13 & 14—Julia & Jacques Two culinary icons, a friendship forged by food, one magnifique marathon! Join Create as we honor Julia and Jacques with original episodes from The French Chef, Jacques Pe-pin’s Heart & Soul and more! Then, join Ming Tsai, Sara Moulton and Maryann Esposito pay tribute to this influential dynamic duo. The marathon concludes with Jacques lovingly preparing dishes once enjoyed by his dear cooking companion.

4May 20 & 21—On Safari Create’s travel pros get up close and personal with the world’s most exotic wildlife. Rudy Maxa and Joseph Rosendo encounter lions, giraffes, elephants while on safari in South Africa. Richard Bangs goes in search of the one-horned rhino in India. Bill Ball spies giant flamingo gatherings explores the wilds of western Kenya on foot and on horseback. Photographer Doug Gardner captures wild horses on North Carolina’s Out-er Banks. And Travel With Kids experience close encounters with cheetahs and elephants in Botswana.

4May 27 & 28—Red, White & BBQ This Memorial Day weekend, Create’s resident grill gurus and smoke masters Steven Raichlen and Aaron Franklin usher in the unofficial start of summer with six hours of mouthwatering barbecue dishes. Im-press your guests with their sure-fire recipes for rotisserie-smoked chicken, brisket on the bone, ribs with vanilla-brown sugar glaze, smoke-braised lamb shanks and much more!

Remembering StaceyOn April 30th we commemorate the one year anniversary of the loss of our great friend and coworker, Stacey Tomczyk. One year has passed since she has shared her infectious smile, fun-loving attitude and delicious homemade cookies. Stacey is no longer roaming the hallways of WTVP, but her memory will always remain strong in our hearts. She was an amazing person and left an indelible mark on our lives and the entire community. We remember Stacey with a smile on our faces because we know that is how she would want it.

If you would like to remember Stacey and her love for local programming and productions, please visit wtvp.org to make a donation to the Stacey Tomczyk Fund for Local Productions or call 309-677-4747.
