OFFICIAL NOTICES

Ninety (90) days notice of the time and place of each Annual Meeting of the Academy shall be given to all Fellows and Members by publication in an official publication of the Academy or by another method that the Board of Directors may designate. Any item of business may be transacted at an Annual Business Meeting of the Fellows and Members of the Academy if the item of business is referred to in the notice of the Annu;ll Meeting. An item of business not referred to in the notice of the Annual Business Meeting shall not be considered or acted upon at the meeting unless it may be considered in accordance with Section 8.01 of the Academy Bylaws or is proposed by a Voting Fellow or Member upon at least thirty (0) days notice to the Executive Vice President or proposed by the Board of Directors. Not less than thirty (0) days notice shall be given of the time, place, and purpose of any special meeting of the Academy. No business may be transacted at a special business meeting of the Fellows and Members of the Academy other than that specified in the notice of the meeting.

Open Meeting: Medicare, HMOs, PPOS, IPAs: Reim-bursement and How It Works

Tuesday, October 1, 12:30-1:45 pm Ballroom F--Moscone Center

All Academy members are strongly encouraged to attend a discussion about Medicare, HMO, PPO and IPA reimbursement and how it works. Members of the Secre­tariat for Governmental Relations Committee on Health Plans will provide their perspectives on the current and future challenges of physician reimbursement. In keeping . with the format of an open meeting, sufficient time will be allowed for questions and answers.

The meeting will examine how pressures from business and government are reshaping the environment in which ophthalmology is practiced. Changes in the Medicare program are affecting how and where surgery is performed, as well as how ophthalmologists are paid for their services. Discussion will include how the private sector is exploring alternatives to fee-for-service and conventional health insurance programs, encouraging preferred provider organi­zations, health maintenance organizations and other forms of packaging health care.

Residents' Forum: Practice Options: How to Find the Right One for You

Wednesday, October 2, 12:30-1:45 pm Ballroom F-Moscone Center

Residents and fellows are urged to attend this panel discussion, designed to provide important information about selecting a practice option among the increasing variety of practice opportunities available to ophthalmologists. The discussion will center on assisting residents and fellows in determining the best practice option for them.

ANNUAL MEETING PROGRAM

Scientific Program

The Annual Meeting's opening session will feature the Jackson Memorial Lecture, to be delivered by Bruce E. Spivey, MD, as well as the symposium, "Socioeconomic Impact on Our Profession: Where Is Ophthalmology Headed?"

Approximately 250 papers, 155 posters and 14 scientific exhibits will be offered during the scientific program at Moscone Center. Highlights of the program include symposia on the following topics:

Instruction Course Program and Tickets

More than 500 courses, exploring a wide range of clinical and socio-economic subjects will be offered at Civic Auditorium. A three-hour course covering the highlights of the Academy's Regional Update Program will be presented again this year. Other courses will focus on the latest proven surgical techniques and technology, including lasers and computers. Courses will range in length from one to six hours, and in educational level from basic to advanced.

Tickets are required for admission to instruction courses. Although advance registration for courses closed on August 23, tickets for courses not sold out during the advance order period may be purchased on-site in San Francisco for a fee of $12 per course hour. The Instruction Course Ticket Sales Area will be located in Room 200 on the Moscone Center East Mezzanine. In addition, a Same-Day Ticket Sales Area will be maintained in the Civic Audi­torium first floor arena. Since course capacities are limited, attendees are urged to purchase tickets on-site as soon as possible. Bulletin boards located in the sales areas will provide information on course ticket availability.

Film/Video Program

Presentations on cataracts, plastic surgery and vi treous comprise this year's film/video program. The presentations on current clinical approaches are designed to make optimum use of film and video as educational media. The objective of the American Academy of Ophthal­mology, in sponsoring annual and other periodic scientific sessions, distributing recordings of portions of those sessions, and publishing its journal, Ophthalmology, is to provide opportunities for the free expression and inter­change of ideas and information. The Academy accepts no responsibility for any opinions, positions, or statements contained or expressed in material which is presented at scientific sessions sponsored by the Academy, reproduced in recordings made and distributed by the Academy, or published in Ophthalmology. Those opinions, positions, and statements are to be attributed solely to their authors and are not, by the fact of their presentation at a session sponsored by the Academy, or their inclusion in recordings made and distributed by the Academy, or their publication in Ophthalmology or ownership of copyright, necessarily those of the Academy or Ophthalmology or indicative of Academy views or policy or editorial concurrence.

• PROGRAM SUPPLEMENT

CME Credits

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians. A maximum of 39 credits can be earned through participation in 1985 Annual Meeting activities. One credit is awarded for each hour of partici­pation, as follows:

Attendance verification cards (in preregistrants' packets) and on-site registration forms (given to on-site registrants) serve as verification of meeting attendance for the purpose of reporting Category [ CME credits to the appropriate agencies. Instruction course attendees will also receive a credit verification form at the end of each course. Academy members will receive a 1985 Annual Meeting CME Credit Reporting Form with their registration materials, which they should complete and return to the Academy if they wish to participate in the Academy's CME Credit Reporting Service.

Please note that each physician is responsible for keeping a record of the number of credits earned, and submitting attendance verification to the appropriate agencies. Further information regarding CME credit report­ing, and information about other Academy-sponsored programs bearing CME credit, will be available at the Resource Center's Education exhibit, located in Exhibit Hall Cat Moscone Center.

Informational Posters and Exhibits

Approximately 25 informational posters and exhibits, presented by organizations that serve the visually impaired, and allied health and ophthalmological societies, will be displayed at Civic Auditorium. Attendees may view the posters and exhibits and meet representatives of the organizations and societies beginning at 1:30 pm on Monday, September 30, and ending at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 3. Consult the informational exhibits and posters section for further details.

Technical exhibits featuring products and services from approximately 300 U.S. and foreign companies can be viewed during the following hours in Exhibit Halls A and C of Moscone Center:

Companies will display instruments, diagnostic equipment, surgical equipment and educational materials. Other exhibits will include lasers, contact lenses and accessories, IOLs, computer technology and practice management services.

Technical exhibitors assume full responsibility for operating all lasers or other hazardous optical sources in their exhibits, in compliance with applicable health and safety codes, so that no safety hazard is presented to meeting exhibitors or attendees. Exhibitors are required to comply with the "Safety Guidelines for Lasers and Other Hazardous Optical Sources," prepared by the Academy Laser Safety Committee, and exhibits are inspected for com­plicance upon installation.

Preregistration

Preregistration closed August 23, and confirmation of preregistration will be mailed before the meeting. Regis­tration materials will not be mailed. Packets containing an attendance verification form, badge, exhibitor inquiry card and instruction course tickets may be picked up at the Preregistration Area.

On-Site Registration

If you did not preregister, you may register at the On­Site Registration Area. Please have your Academy JD number, if known, with you when you register. (Your ID number can be found following your name on any Academy mailing label, on your monthly Statement of Account or in your 1985-86 Academy Membership Directory.)

Membership

As a benefit of Academy membership, Fellows, Mem­bers and International Members who have paid their 1985 dues can attend the Annual Meeting free of charge. For information about membership or to request an application, call the Membership Services Department at the Academy.

Medical students, technicians, office staff or other allied health personnel may register each day at the Moscone Center On-Site Registration Area for one-day admission to the Academy exhibit halls at Moscone Center and Civic Auditorium. Proof of status (business card or letter) will be requested when registering.

Be sure to refer to the Facilities Schedule on page 6 for this year's exhibit hall days, hours and locations.

Cancellations

The deadline for preregistration cancellation was August 23. No refunds can be granted for cancellation requests received after that date.

ON-SITE FEE PAYMENTS

All payments at the meeting must be made in U.S. dollars, and may be made by personal check, bank draft, traveler's check, cash, VISA or Master Charge. No other credit cards can be accepted.

HOUSING

Housing forms were mailed in April with preregis­tration forms. Additional forms, if needed, may be duplicated or obtained from the Academy Meetings Depart­ment.

Housing is available. If you still need a hotel room, complete the housing form and return it to the housing bureau before September 20, or telephone the bureau beginning September 13. The housing bureau telephone number is (415) 974-6900.

Changes and Cancellations

Any changes such as arrival or departure dates, room type, etc., should be made directly with the hotel. Reserva­tions can be canceled until September 13 by writing to the housing bureau. After September 13, cancel directly with the hotel. In order to receive a refund, cancellation must be received by the assigned hotel at least 72 hours prior to arrival date.

MEETING FACILITIES

The beautiful Moscone Center is built mostly under­ground and covers an lI-acre area. Registration, all scientific sessions, technical and scientific exhibits, posters, the Academy Resource Center, museum exhibit and Academy offices will be located in this facility. Instruction courses, the film/video program, informational exhibits and posters, and an auxiliary education sales area, will be located at Civic Auditorium, a short distance from Moscone Center. Shuttle service will be provided between the two facilities. Please refer to to Facilities Schedule on page 6 for further information.

MEETING SERVICES

Meeting Information

On-site and telephone inqUIries about the meeting should be directed to the Meeting Information Booth in the Moscone Center Lobby. Attendees' hotel addresses will be available, and tickets for some alumni events will be on sale. The Meeting Information telephone number, (415) 896-2010, will be in operation beginning Sunday, September 29.

Argus

The Argus will publish two special Annual Meeting editions Monday, September 30, and Wednesday, October I. They will include up-to-the-minute information on sold-out courses, late entry poster abstracts, reports on Academy meetings, and updates on Academy and related events, meeting facilities and services. Copies will be available on­si te at Moscone Center and Civic Auditorium.

Tapes

Tapes of all scientific sessions and 34 instruction courses can be purchased or ordered on-site, at the tape sales desks located in the lobbies at Moscone Center and Civic Auditorium. Consult the instruction course section of this program for a listing of the courses to be taped.

Message Center

Messages for attendees will be taken during registra­tion hours at the computerized Message Center, located in the Registration Area, adjacent to the west entrance of Moscone Center. Video display terminals will be located at Moscone Center and Civic Auditorium to alert attendees who have messages awaiting them at the Message Center.

Remember that there will be no paging service at the meeting; you must check the Message Center daily for your messages. We encourage you to leave your complete meeting schedule with your office staff and family. The Message Center telephone number is (415) 896-2000.

• PROGRAM SUPPLEMENT

Notice Board

Announcements and flyers, 8Y.z x 11" maximum size, may be placed only on the notice board in the Moscone Center Lobby. Any material placed elsewhere will be removed.

Lost and Found

The Lost and Found will be located at the Meeting Information Booth in the Registration Area, Moscone Center Lobby.

First Aid

First aid stations will be located outside of Room Eon the west side of the Moscone Center exhibit hall level and in Room 107 at Civic Auditorium.

Coat and Luggage Check

Depending upon the weather, a coat check will be open daily in the Ballroom Lobby on the exhibit hall level of Moscone Center. Luggage may be stored there on Thursday, October 3.

Shuttle Bus Service

Shuttle bus service will be provided between the official Academy hotels and Moscone Center. Beginning Monday through Thursday, September 30-0ctober 3, shuttle buses will also operate between Moscone Center and Civic Auditorium, location of all Academy instruction courses, informational posters and exhibits and the film/video program. A detailed route and schedule are printed on page 22. Information will also be available at the Registration Area in the Moscone Center Lobby and in hotel lobbies.

Restaurants

Snack bars are conveniently located in Exhibit Halls A and C and other locations in Moscone Center. Restaurant facili ties will be available Monday through Thursday, September 30-0ctober 3, in the Civic Auditorium arena.

Air Travel Arrangements

Conference Air Services, the Academy's official air travel coordinator, will staff a booth opening Monday, September 30, in the Registration Area, Moscone Center Lobby. Their staff can assist with travel arrangements and changes.

Travel Arrangements-XXV International Congress of Ophthalmology, Rome 1986

Conference Air Services (CAS) has developed a travel and housing package exclusively tailored for U.S. attendees of the Congress. CAS staff will have an informational booth at the meeting, where staff will be available to provide materials or answer questions regarding travel arrangements to Rome.

Airport Transportation

Bus: Convenient bus service between San Francisco International Airport and a downtown terminal (Taylor and Ellis) is offered at 15-minute intervals. Fare (subject to change) is $6 one-way.

Taxi: Taxis from San Francisco International Airport to downtown San Francisco are available at a fare of about $20, with a travel time of 20 to 30 minutes.

Visitor Information

City Information: Maps and information about San Francisco, its shopping, and other attractions can be found at the City Information Booth located in the Registration Area, Moscone Center Lobby.

Restaurants: The Restaurant Reservation Booth located on the exhibit hall level of Moscone Center will provide restaurant information and reservation assistance. Menus will be displayed, and booth staff can make reservations for meeting attendees at one of San Francisco's 4,200 eating establishments.

Academy offices will be located on the east and west mezzanines at Moscone Center and the first floor at Civic Auditorium.

The News Room provides a place for representatives of newspapers, magazines, television, radio and wire services to meet with authors of Annual Meeting papers and other presenters.

When media representatives ask to interview ophthal­mologists, News Room staff will contact the physicians to arrange interviews in the News Room. Only presenters requested for interviews should come to the News Room. The news media will be asked not to solicit interviews outside this area. Questions about the propriety of giving interviews or the operation of the News Room in general should be directed to the Media Information Manage"r, to the Associate Secretary for Media Information, H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, or Media Information Committee member Ben Ho, MD.

Special Note: Messages for presenters sought for interviews will be left at the Message Center and partici­pants are urged to check daily for messages.

Scientific Session Presenters' Audiovisual Room Room 236--East Mezzanine Moscone Center

The Audiovisual Room will be staffed Sunday, September 29, through Thursday, October 3, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, to assist scientific session presenters with their audiovisual needs. Presenters must submit slides and other materials to this room no later than four working hours prior to their presentations. Presenters of 9:00 am papers should submit their materials by 4:00 pm the preceding day. Slides may be viewed and edited in the audiovisual room. Please note that course instructors are required to use the audio­visual room at Civic Auditorium.

Instructors may review their audiovisual materials Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm daily. Staff will be available to assist instructors with any audiovisual needs.

Presenters of Scientific Papers

All scientific papers presented at the Annual Meeting are copyrighted for possible publication in Ophthalmology, the Academy journal. It is mandatory that the original manuscript and three copies, as well as three sets of each illustration, be submitted with a copyright transfer form and checklist.

Authors are urged to mail their materials as soon as possible to: Ophthalmology, P.O. Box C 1001, Wykagyl Station, New Rochelle, NY 10804. Please do not mail any materials after September 12.

Authors who are unable to send their materials by September 12 must bring them to the Scientific Session Presenters' Audiovisual Room at Moscone Center (Room 236) on the first day of the Annual Meeting, Sunday, September 29. Noncompliance with this requirement may result in disqualification from present or future Academy programs.

ACADEMY RESOURCE CENTER

The Academy Resource Center, located in Exhibit Hall Cat Moscone Center, will be open during the following days and times:

Members and guests are encouraged to visit the Resource Center to gather information about Academy programs and services. Academy staff will be available throughout the Resource Center to answer questions and assist attendees.

Education

All of the Academy's current educational materials, including manuals, modules, slide-script programs, video­tapes and the 1985-86 Basic and Clinical Science Course, will be on display and available for purchase at the newly designed Education exhibit. Information regarding future educational programs and CME credit will also be available.

Public and Professional Information

The Public and Professional Information exhibit will feature a special National Eye Care Project (NECP) display and a computerized demonstration of the NECP Helpline. News releases and videotapes of national television network interviews with Academy members will highlight the media information display. Patient information brochures on eye care can be purchased, including those on five new topics:

Uveitis, Dry Eye, Myths About Eye Care, Laser Surgery of the Eye, and Floaters and Flashes of Light. Nine slide­script programs for public and professional presentation can also be purchased. Information statements and the Large Print Book Fair Manual will also be available.

Placement Exchange/Fellowship Lis~ngs

The Placement Exchange will provide information for ophthalmologists offering and seeking positions. Meeting attendees who are looking for positions or ophthalmologists seeking to fill openings can register at the Exchange. Placement Exchange registrants can examine new listings, added daily, and reserve private interview areas. Listings of ophthalmology fellowship programs in the U.S. will be available for purchase.

Membership

Membership applications and information will be available. A series of brief practice management guides written by and for ophthalmologists about specific topics in practice management will be available in the membership area. Titles include "A Guide to Contracting With Alterna­tive Delivery Systems (HMOs, PPOs, CMPs)," "A Guideline for Selection of Practice Alternatives," and "Taking on a Partner." Manpower information, including statistical reports on the geographical distribution of ophthalmologists, will also be on display.

Insurance

Information will be provided about the Academy's professional liability program, and other Academy-sponsored insurance programs. Representatives from the Academy's insurance administrators will be available to discuss members' insurance needs.

Office of Governmental Relations

Information about the Academy's national govern­mental relations efforts will be available, including policy statements on issues concerning regulatory agencies, manpower, health plans, Medicare and federal legislation.

State and Subspecialty Relations

Information about state legislation affecting ophthal­mology and resources to assist state and subspecialty societies meet Academy members' needs will be available. Suggestions on ways the Academy can work more closely with state and subspecialty societies will be welcomed.

Ophthalmic Procedures Assessment

The Academy's state-of-the-art papers about the safety and effectiveness of various ophthalmic tests and procedures will be available.

Academy long-range planning materials will be avail­able.

• PROGRAM SUPPLEMENT

FOUNDA nON MUSEUM OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

The Foundation Museum of the American Academy of Ophthalmology will exhibit a variety of artifacts from its permanent collection. The exhibit will focus oil "The History of the Ophthalmoscope," displaying pieces on loan from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Medical Museum in Washington, DC. The Museum Exhibit will be located at booth 858 in Exhibit Hall C at Moscone Center. Museum staff and committee members will be available to answer questions about the artifacts on display and explain how donations can be made.

EVENTS

Spouse Program

An inviting program of San Francisco and surrounding area tours, featuring many historical and cultural attractions, and in-hotel programs has been scheduled for registered spouses during Academy Week. Spouses who did not preregister by the August 23 preregistration deadline can register at the Spouse Registration Area, in the Moscone Center Lobby. The $20 registration fee entitles spouses to visit the technical exhibits, Academy Resource Center, Foundation Museum, attend the scientific program, purchase instruction course tickets, and participate in the spouse program activities. Tickets will be sold on-site for spouse tours and programs still available.

Spouses are invited to visit the Spouse Hospitality Lounge in the Elizabethan Room of the St. Francis Hotel. It will be open from noon to 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 29, and from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, September 30-0ctober 3.

Alumni Functions

Most alumni events will be held Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, October I and 2. For further informa­tion, see the Alumni and Related Group section of the program on page 241. Tickets for some alumni events will be available at the Meeting Information Booth in the Registration Area, Moscone Center Lobby.

President's ReceptiOn

The President's Reception will be held on Monday, September 30, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Continental Ballroom of the San Francisco Hilton and Tower. The reception is open to all registered Members and Fellows of the Academy and their spouses. Tickets, distributed with attendees' registration materials, will be collected at the door. Each participant in the reception is asked to bring an antique article as a donation to the Foundation Museum.
