Recreational Sports Users Group
10:00 – 12:25 PM
1) Group introductions
a) On-Campus Rec Sports includes many organized events. Event management is therefore important.
2) Room-by-Room Specifics
a) Fieldhouse
i) Approximately 750 – 800 Tilt-n-roll seats are desirable (for NIRSA events, etc.)(close to courts)
ii) Pole Vault is shown too tight to the Jogging Track
iii) Four Basketball Courts, desired. 50’ x 84’ is necessary. One w/ 6 Goals. Three with 2 Goals.
iv) Four Tennis Courts, desired. 9’ spacing between courts. This was subsequently reduced to three.
v) Don’t need Triple / Long Jump on the infield, for recreation.
vi) Four Volleyball Courts, desirable. 9M x 18M configurations.
vii) Eight Badminton Courts, overall. Review existing striping configuration at existing Rec (2 per BB Court).
viii) Overhead netting, prefer it be located suitably outside of the Basketball Court Baselines (say 6’ min)
ix) Two baseball batting tunnels are desired
x) Ceiling-retractable Basketball Goals are desired
xi) Ceiling-retractable Volleyball Courts are desired
xii) Archery venue. Assume approximately six (6) targets w/ 70-meter shots.
xiii) No floor striping required for the following Club Sports / Acuities.
(1) Rugby
(2) Lacrosse
(3) Kickball.
(4) Floor Hockey.
(5) Whiffle Ball
(6) Indoor Flag Football
(7) Soccer. Possibly some tick-marks.

a) Surfaces should be multi-purpose for activities of recreation, whenever possible.
4) Athletic Training
a) Yes, used by Recreation.
b) Private Exam room, with overhead curtain, yes. No need for a toilet room.
c) 3 Treatment tables, and 3 Taping tables
d) Ice Machine
5) Multi-Purpose Room
a) Yes, used by Rec Sports
i) Instruction (priority), Coaches, Club Sports, Martial Arts, Group Ex Classes (mirrors, etc.)
ii) 900 SF okay
iii) Desire resilient flooring in at least one of the two rooms
6) Timing & Control not used by Rec Sports
7) Ops Offices
a) One Facility Director (for the building), is assumed.
b) Rec might use one office
i) Assume, one Department-based Office for each of three Departments (R, A, E).

c) Can this be aligned with a Laundry Space?

14) Main Lobby
a) Would like this space to be neutral in its brand for all roommates? It is a shared space.
b) Convey movement, motion, wellness, and human form. All of which is very different than just athletics.
15) Critique of two Planning & Design Options
a) Option 1
i) Move Athletic Training to the main level
ii) Like the contemporary aesthetic
iii) Like the overhead garage doors
iv) Like having toilet rooms both north and south
v) Like having the office arranged in a Suite.
vi) Want only one entry point, concern about people getting in from the north through toilets

Athletic Users Group
1:00 – 3:15 PM
1) Room-by-Room Specifics
a) Fieldhouse
i) Committee recommended evaluating an option with all spectator seating placed outside the track?
ii) Sand pits inside track. It was noted that Illinois Wesleyan has a nice system.
iii) Pole vault. Two required. Three desired.
(1) Seek two that do not overlap the track in any way.
(2) Consider Competition Pole Vault and Long / Triple Jump on the infield of the Track
iv) Need durable interior surfaces for baseball / softball
v) Consider placing one Sand Pit on the infield, for good spectator viewing.
b) Eliminate overlap between track lanes and long / triple jump lanes, if possible.
c) Committee noted 2 long/triple jump pits and 2 pole vault pits were acceptable (1 practice and 1 competition each)
d) High Jump. Prefer this to be a spike-able surface.
e) Track Radius. Need not be 21m. Review / consider a radius of between 19 and 21m.
i) Share with Athletics the radii measures known at other Fieldhouses
f) Track Lane Width
i) 42” in Radius. 42” on straightway
g) Throws cage.
i) Prefer the Porter-style overhead systems
h) Extra lanes desired (two or more), for practice. In addition to the 8-lane straightway
i) Overhead Divider Curtains
i) It is unacceptable if the curtain nets extend onto Lanes 1 & 2
ii) Four (4) retractable overhead Baseball Hitting Nets
(1) 14’ x 14’ x 70’. Preferer 20’ or 25’ tall, if possible. Minimum 12’ wide.
(2) Would like a double-wide configuration for throwing, if possible. Center net is retractable.
j) Timing Equipment
i) Consider an overhead timing arm, dropping from the ceiling (Nebraska has this)
k) Athletic Training Space
i) TBD. The AD will follow up on this following review with others.
l) Multi-Purpose Meeting Room
i) Yes, can use this space.
ii) Like the movable wall.
iii) Need not be larger than 30 – 40 persons (900 SF is okay)
m) Team Meeting Rooms
i) Used for films, so technology is needed
ii) Multi-purpose rooms are best. Flexibility it good.

i) Don’t run the Triple / Long Jump Pit across the main entry.
ii) Concern about spectator traffic patterns and access to seating areas

a) Track geometries are very important! Must meet NCAA requirements.

i) Primary purpose: Walking, and Fitness Walking Classes
ii) Space for training exercise physiologists
iii) Equipment needs (10 – 15 pieces)
(1) Stationary Bicycles are a necessity
(2) Elliptical Equipment
(3) Other equipment
iv) Blood pressure tests, as well
v) Pre-test and post-test individuals for a one-mile run / walk
vi) Required a small station set up close to walking track and exercise equipment space for checking in, storing
blood pressure testing equipment, etc..

a) Instructional Rooms. Yes, will use these at 900 SF, each.
