Thank God the editor-in-chief does not have to be funny. At least not right away and by herself. It is sufficient if she manages to find the right people. That is why I pulled Miram Šedá from the sticky darkness of the crucial Prague clubs to the light of the day. And because the energy drinks are already in the cooler, she agreed. I have to admit, though, she probably won’t be over the moon with the final make-up of the editorial team. The thing is, even the gyms have been hit by the gender quotas.To keep the incorrect entertainment flowing, we even drafted postgrad Pavol Seriš to work with us (although he hesitated a little). His snappy antique-vase-like stories will always fill the last page. Con-sidering the fact that Miriam will also find her place in the back section of our magazine, I recommend reading it from the back. You will start with the fun, move to the academic dullness and end up with the completely technical editorials.The next level of fun comes when the emanation of superior carelessness penetrates all the other parts and organizers, and the vision started in the omega editorial is fulfilled much faster than you could have imagined. Long live self-fulfilling prophecies!Magnificently planned interviews are lost much sooner than they could be lost in translation. The gradual re-discovery of them thus causes a considerable feeling of euphoria, but they also take away the chance to enjoy the endless series of photos from readers that would fill otherwise empty pages. But the strongest flare has arri-ved from Warsaw, Poland, where they decided, under the influence of Dionysius, to rearrange their work into even more exclusive form. So there will be a totally di-fferent fairy to frighten you, or groom to infatuate you from the seabed, than those you would expect after rea-ding the bulletin. And we are more than pleased that the theater is alive, breathing, transforming.I am sure that similar joys will liven up the next few days of the festival as well. I also hope – and you pro-bably hope with me as well – that these will be more inspirational. After all, even the limping and unsight-ly Hefaistos made jewelry of heavenly splendor. Since I have already chosen him in the title of this section (as I have generously appointed all the more popular creatures to be patrons of the larger spheres), I should live up to his legacy and let the good work speak for me. With his blessing, it might touch at least the in-verse mist...

Encounter

An Encounter. A meeting point.A dictionary and the mood of the organizers and hosts as they try to seem friendly. As if there were no problems, as if the only thing that has to be done is to enjoy oneself.The ancient Dionysia used to be a big celebration of the theatre but that was not its sole purpose. It also served as a grand celebration of human values and as a ritual of their self-confirmation, nevertheless a ritual which always invited people to start a dialogue. Through the interpretation of myths, the Dionysia en-couraged the whole society (since the whole city used to attend the theatre and not just a random sample of people) to vindicate their truths and rules, or have them undergo revision.This remains a part of contemporary theatre.It is a place in time and space dedicated to the meet-ing of people, who must witness a retelling of myths or various attempts at reviving them, be it ancient or modern ones. Those myths are often disturbing (even a laugh may be disturbing or at least uneasy) so the creators stand against the audience. They meet through dialogue, equipped with opinions and argu-ments, their own experience and feelings.However, this dialogue, in order to be constructive, needs attention and participation from both sides.Such communication may not always be amicable.Construction is also possible through destruction.And this should be a part of this year’s festival as well: not to forget that theatre is a discourse enabling a con-versation about problems which transcend the indi-vidual, not to be afraid to enter the communication zone and recreate stories in such a way they may affect the audience.No to be idle, not to fall asleep in a pub or a club. Let’s not pretend that while the festival is happening there is no war in Ukraine. Let’s not pretend that this week problems are non-existent and there is only festivity and friendliness.Because as Webster’s dictionary from 1913 states, Encounter means:“(adv.) to come against face to face; to meet; to con-front, either by chance, suddenly, or deliberately; es-pecially to meet in opposition or with hostile intent; to engage in conflict with; to oppose; to struggle with; as, to encounter a friend in traveling; two armies en-counter each other; to encounter obstacles or difficul-ties, to encounter strong evidence of a truth.”

S Ares on the first attack

Rarely can a person who has nothing to do with the theater – not even a fan – attend a festival several times and work directly with the local print reporter. Two years ago, when I was fished from Prague’s murky wa-ters by then editor-in-chief Matěj Randár for Meeting Point, I took it as practice, as a kind of “pleasant forced labor”. Then last year I was also picked by Macháček and this year comes the shove. For several reasons:

1) This is my third Encounter.

2) To my surprise, this year’s Meeting Point is led by a woman. It’s logical, at least because the compa-ny opens a Pandora’s Box of new quotas for gender balance. And therefore I expect that if Randár and Macháček surrounded themselves with women – I’ve hardly seen so many together – my colleague Hof-manová will pick from Brno’s gyms the perfect male specimens. We’ll see.

3) I am not unknown in Brno.

4) After all the experience from theater festivals, I re- cognized that I could go to the theater. All the artists and critics were always trying to explain to me that “perfor-mance” is not a “staging” and going to the theater alone or accompanied by two or more people is not the same as “going with school” because classmates generally have a lower intellectual level than friends . After ten minutes of monologues saying that the theater attracts charis-matic people, but with venereal diseases, I was left with one question: “What if classmates are also friends?”

5) I look forward to kebab.

And finally… I’ve always been an autonomous unit – hanging out around town, going to the office, having a Red Bull (©) or two; writing about the current inspira-tion from the streets, bars and sweaty armpits of police officers at the dysfunctional traffic lights. The new ed-itor in chief, however, gave me a task: Ares on the first attack. Here the lascivious glances and smiles at editors – not even jokes about the finiteness of our existence – won’t really do anything. I have to work hard. The first thing I think of when it comes to the ancient world is endless orgies. In the end, what else should an interna-tional, student theater festival be about than a kind of bacchanale.

And so I am sending a message from Prague:„BRNO BEWARE - HERE COMES YOUR WEEKLY
