HOSE CONSTRUCTION
Y o u r V a l u e P a r t n e r
Hoses consist of: • Liner - Manufactured with flexible PVC. Resistance to medium being conveyed. Temperature range is -20° to +60°C. Can be conductive, non-conductive or anti-static. • Reinforcing - Manufactured with high density polyester. Resists pressure. Types of reinforcing include polyester yarn, spiral rigid PVC, nylon, static wire, colour trace, tyre cord, rayon and kevlar. • Cover - Manufactured with flexible PVC. Protects the reinforcing and resists the outer elements. The cover can have the following properties: abrasion resistance, UV resistance, weather resistance coloured, chemical resistance and heat resistance.

MEGAFLEX FRICTION LOSS CHART
Y o u r V a l u e P a r t n e r
Abrasion: The wearing away by friction.Acid resistance: The ability to resist the action of identified acids within specific limits of concentration and temperature.Adhesion: The strength of bond between layers.Ambient temperature: The temperature of the atmosphere or medium surrounding the object under consideration.Bend radius: The radius of a bent section of hose measured to the innermost surface of the curved portion.Bore: The internal diameter of a hose.Braid: A continuous sleeve of interwoven single or multiple strands of yarn or wire.Braided hose: Hose in which the reinforcing material has been applied as interlaced spiral strands.Brand: A mark or symbol identifying or describing the product and/or manufacturer may be embossed, inlaid or printed.Burst: A rupture caused by internal pressure.Carcass: The fabric, cord or rigid PVC reinforcing section of a hose between the liner and cover.Collapsible hose: A soft wall hose used for discharge only.Compound: The mixture of PVC and other materials, which are combined to give the desired properties when used in the manufacture of a product.Corrugated hose: Hose with an appreciable and regular variation in wall thickness in the form of a continuous spiral groove.Cover: The outer material covering the hose.Cut resistant: The characteristic of withstanding the cutting action of sharp objects.Delivery Hose: Hose used for transferring conveyant under pressure.Extruded: Forced through the shaping die of an extruder. May be solid or cross section.Filler: Any compounding material, usually in powder form, added in a substantial volume to improve quality or lower cost.Flexibility: The ability of a hose to be flexed, bent or bowed without loss of serviceability.Hardwall: A hose containing a rigid PVC core to resist suction/vacuum.Hose: A flexible conduit of circular cross section, usually consisting of liner, reinforcement and cover.ID: Abbreviation for inside diameter.Kinking: A temporary or permanent distortion of a product, induced by winding or doubling upon itself.Liner: The innermost continuous PVC element of a hose.Mandrel: A form, generally of elongated round section, used for size and to support hose during fabrication.Minimum bend radius: The minimum radius to which the hose can be used without kinking or damagingthe reinforcement.OD: The abbreviation for outside diameter.Oxidation: The reaction of oxygen on a product, usually evidenced by a change in the appearance or feel of the surface.Ozone resistance: The ability to withstand the deteriorating effects of ozone.Pitch: The distance from one point on a helix to the corresponding point on the next turn of the helix, measured to the axis.Plasticiser: A compound ingredient, which can change the hardness, flexibility or plasticity of an elastomer.Proof pressure test: A non-destructive pressure test applied to a hose to determine its reliability at normal workingpressures by applying pressure which exceeds the manufacturer’s rated working pressure.Recovery: The degree to which a hose returns to its normal dimension or shape after being distorted.Reinforcement: The strength members, consisting of fabric, cord and or metal, rigid PVC of a hose.Safety factor: The ratio used to establish the working pressure based on the average burst strength of the hose.Softwall: A hose containing only PVC and fabric reinforcement with no rigid material present.Static wire: A wire incorporated in a hose to conduct static electricity.Suction hose: A hose used for transferring conveyant under conditions where a partial vacuum is encountered.Tensile strength: The maximum tensile stress applied while stretching a specimen to rupture.Tolerance: The upper and lower limits between which a dimension must be held.Tube: See liner.Weathering: The surface deterioration of a hose cover during outdoor exposure, such as cracking.Working pressure: The maximum pressure to which the hose will be subjected, including momentary surgeincreases in pressure which can occur during service.
