Our customers love the boosters, because they look special and give them the feeling that they are receiving an exclusive bonus. Therefore sunbeds that have the boosters are best-sellers in our studios and thus can be sold at a higher price.

The boosters’ design already offers something new and special that the customers find attracting. They enjoy the pleasant warmth which is much nicer when using the sunbeds that have the boosters than when using those without. The customers give positive feedback on the way their skin feels after the tanning session.

The sun rarely shines on

the island, which is what

inspired Frank Taylor

in 1993 to view the tanning

market as a future business opportunity.

At the time, people were secretly tanning in the

back room of one of his video rental shops after

officially having rented a movie. This trend lasted

several years until he opened his first Indigo Sun

shop in 1998 which was purely a sun tanning

studio. Today you can find over 50 of his shops in

Great Britain and the successful concept of modern

and stylish studios continues to expand.

Strong muscles need a sufficient supply of vitamin D, which

was proven by a current medical study carried out by the

Institute for Performance Diagnosis and Sports Traumato-

logy in Koblenz. The study focused on the following question: Does

an improved level of vitamin D serum have a positive effect on the

metabolism and the physical performance?

For the study, the team led by Prof. Dr. Peter Billigmann examined a group of

participants consisting of around 30 ambitious recreational sportsmen and professional

athletes between the ages of 18 and 60. The study had a three-month duration

during which the participants carried on with their normal training programme.

At the beginning and at the end of the study the metabolic parameter “total

creatine kinase” and “myoglobin”, as well as various physiological performance

parameters were measured.

In addition, the participants of the study were divided into three groups accor-

ding to their vitamin D serum level – ideal range, vitamin D deficiency and serious

vitamin D deficiency. Thereafter they were allotted varying amounts of sun tanning

time in the mon amie Collarium® based on the vitamin D serum level, skin type and

subjective perception.

First of all, the result of this study proves that the vitamin D serum levels were

verifiably increased by an individual sun tanning session in the mon amie

Collarium®. Secondly, the catabolic metabolic state was enhanced and can

thus be seen as a direct indication of improved regeneration and viewed as an

indirect indication for improved physical performance.

industry and, most of all, using it. As

for our studio in Fléron: It was opened

five years ago. Thanks to our rigour and

our demands regarding the quality of

customer support and service, as well

as cleanliness, we were able to build

up a very good reputation in the Liege

region. Our customer base continues to

grow every year.”

in France is € 9.64 an

hour and € 1,457.55

gross for a 35-hour

week. We employ two

people for the studio.

A young man works

from 6 pm to 8 pm and all day on Saturdays. We

also employ a receptionist who works all day

from Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 6 pm. In

the end, we actually pay the receptionist at our

studio more than the minimum wage: € 1,520.27

gross.”

Sonnenstudio No. 1 in Hanau:

“The many documentation obliga-

tions are more trouble for us than

paying € 8.50 an hour. For years

we have mainly been employing

part-time and full-time employees at

a higher hourly rate and wish to hire

even more part-time employees.

This allows us to considerably extend

the period of employment, which is a great benefit with

regard to the UV Protection Directive (UVSV) and the high

costs of training. We were able to offset the additional costs

incurred by employing those who only work on a € 450-

basis by shortening our hours of operation. We have not

received any noteworthy reactions from our customers.”

payDay For the first time in Germany since

January 1st, 2015 all employees

are to be paid a statutory mini-

mum wage of € 8.50 an hour.

This has a significant effect on tanning salon

operators, whose employee structure is often

characterized by a larger proportion of „mini-

jobbers“ and temporary employees as opposed to

permanent employees.

We gathered the opinions in Germany for you and

questioned studio owners in Europe who having

been dealing with the topic of minimum wage for

much longer.

Peter Lischka, studio operator SpeedSun in Pohlheim:

“In the end the customer will end up paying for the politicians’ decision: Of course we had to

raise our prices. We no longer stay open as long on the weekend. We will continue to increase

the number of permanent employees and hire fewer temporary employees. However, this

is a trend we have been witnessing for years now. There were no changes to the wages of

permanent employees, as they were already being paid at least € 8.50 an hour before taxes.

I definitely think that cutting down on staff is the wrong approach, since the

employees are salespeople first and foremost and those who feel under pressure

definitely sell less. The opportunities to save money on electricity are almost exhausted,

with net electricity prices at 4 - 4.5 cents per kWh. Our customers accept the higher prices,

because they know that minimum wage is a compulsory measure that we can’t avoid. Since the beginning of the year

we have received noticeably more applications, both for temporary positions as well and for permanent positions.

Coincidence? I have no idea.”

“The monthly minimum wage

for an employee without pre-

vious experience working in

a sun tanning studio is

€ 1,557.00 (circa € 1,100 net).

For an employee with 10 years of experience the gross

wage lies at € 1,966.00. We apply this regulation to

our employees. We have the possibility of receiving

employment aid for employing staff, whose training is

not as highly qualified, but for our studio in Fléron we

prefer proper training and minimal staff turnover.”

was to increase our

prices by a total of

20 % this year. By

buying energy-saving

sunbeds we were

able to significantly lower our energy costs in

the long term. We plan to continue replacing

cost-intensive sunbeds with more energy-

efficient ones.”

“I can’t tell you today exactly

what consequences the in-

troduction of the minimum

wage will have. I let my tax

advisor advise me to be sure

that I implement everything

correctly, particularly since

improvements have been

announced on the part of the lawmakers and the

record keeping requirement for my employees’

working times is an important topic. As a precautionary

measure I already increased the prices for my sunbeds

and am also thinking about adjusting my flat rate. I

have already introduced shorter opening hours.”

Bernd Holderberg, studio operator Sun-Planet in Neukirchen-Vluyn:

“My studios are doing very well despite the introduction of the minimum wage. I already employ 15 staff

members although shortages can occur because someone is ill or might exceed the € 450 limit. Cutting

staff is still not an option for me. I can’t understand how other studios can make do with only 5 employees

and then remain under the € 450 limit. I suspect that the employees there are still only paid € 5 an hour

and I ask myself why that is not checked. In that respect, I see a strong need for action on the part of the

authorities. I increased my prices by € 1 and can justify that with acquisition of new sunbeds, namely three

6700 and one 6800 hurricane.”
