LUXFER GROUP

MEL Chemicals has been manufacturing from our Manchester site in the UK for over 75 years. It is the headquarters for business administration and research and development of MEL. We have an on-site team committed to scale up of new processes, taking us from laboratory to full scale production rapidly.

We continue to manufacture zirconium chemicals and oxide grades directly from the mineral ore. We manufacture a comprehensive range of zirconium oxides and hydroxides; with a variety of physical and chemical characteristics. We also offer a full range of doped materials and can tailor requirements to customers’ specifications.

MEL Chemicals’ management systems in the UK meet the requirements of ISO9001:2008 and ISO14001:2004.

The USA’s most experienced manufacturer and supplier of quality zirconium chemicals and zirconium oxides, servicing the Americas and the world since 1974.

MEL Chemicals Inc has identical facilities to the plant in the UK. They produce zirconia, doped zirconias and reactive chemicals in large quantities on multipurpose plants.

Besides zirconia, MEL Chemicals Inc. is the exclusive distributor in the USA and Mexico for Keeling & Walker Ltd., a global leader in tin oxide expertise for ceramic and advanced applications.

MEL Chemicals Inc management system in the USA meets the requirements of ISO/TS 16949:2009 and 14001:2004.

Environmental

MEL chemicals is committed to the care and protection of the environment. Our materials have been developed for use in cleaning up exhaust emissions, removing harmful contaminants from water and gas streams, alternative energy production and providing alternative materials to environmentally harmful process components.

AUTOMOTIVE & DIESEL

MEL has pioneered a range of zirconia based materials for use in three-way and diesel catalysts. MEL Chemicals continues to work to produce successively more effective technology to meet the ever increasing demands for automotive emissions.

OXYGEN SENSORS

MELox™ yttria doped zirconia is currently used in the manufacture of automotive oxygen sensors. Stationary Emissions Abatement MEL manufacture a range of materials that help control NOx emissions, in both mobile and stationary engines.

CO2 CAPTURE

At MEL we have developed 2 different technologies for CO2 capture. Our MELsorb®

range includes our modified lithium zirconates and we have developed modified Mg/Al hydrotalcites where some of the octahedral layer cations are replaced with zirconium.

WATER TREATMENT

Our MELsorb® range includes an environmentally safe, highly efficient inorganic adsorption system for Industrial applications, specially designed to provide removal of Arsenic III and V. As an adsorption system, it may be used for the removal of additional contaminants but this will be application dependent.

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

As traditional, non-renewable, fuel sources diminish, MEL is helping to develop alternative, less environmentally damaging, energy sources. Several of our materials have found use in renewable and alternative energy applications. Please contact us to discuss your particular requirements.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE CHEMICAL ALTERNATIVES

MEL manufactures alternatives to formaldehyde for use in paper production.

HealthcareZirconium chemicals are generally regarded to being of very low environmental risk due to their inertness; several of these properties can be exploited in the Healthcare area.

BIOIMPLANTS

Zirconia based materials have demonstrated the necessary strength, biocompatibility and low toxicity to make them useful as bioimplants.

ISOLUX®

ISOLUX® Media is MEL Chemicals’ patented free-flowing amorphous powder designed specifically to provide high performance Arsenic III and V reduction within the drinking water industry. The media is NSF Standard 61 Certified. As an adsorption media, it may be used for the removal of additional contaminants but this will be application dependent.

All commercial and development materials comply with relevant REACH and TSCA regulations; any development materials that are not on the TSCA list are supplied for R&D use only under the TSCA regulations.

ProtectionBesides being chemically inert

and environmentally safe, zirconia can be manufactured

to resist high temperatures, pressures and wear. These

characteristics make it ideal for applications in conflict and

emergency situations.

SpecialityMEL Chemicals have been manufacturing and developing zirconium chemicals for over 60 years. We are the only zirconia manufacture in the Western hemisphere who maintains the ability to derive zirconia directly from the zircon ore.

CHEMICAL CATALYSISZirconium based catalysts can be used in hydrogenation, oxidation, amination, isomerisation and other catalytic reactions. They often demonstrate excellent stability, reducing the economic impact of catalyst change out.

WEAR PARTSMEL manufactures several grades of doped and undoped zirconium oxide for use as engineering ceramics.

NANOMATERIALSWe can offer aqueous suspensions of nano zirconia and nano stabilised zirconia materials with a particle range of 10 -100nm.

REFRACTORIESOur MELox™ Mg range of magnesia doped zirconia materials and our range of undoped zirconia materials vary in purity, particle size and surface area and are ideal for use in refractory applications.

PZTMEL have developed a range of electronic grade zirconium oxide materials for use in lead zirconium titanates.

BINDERSZirconium solutions can make effective binders for ceramic and catalyst pellets and extrudates. Our range of solutions include zirconium nitrate, zirconium acetate, both as a 20 wt% and 30 wt% ZrO2 solution, and zirconium hydroxchloride solution.

INKSMEL manufactures zirconium propionate for inks manufacture along with ammonium zirconium carbonate and potassium zirconium carbonate, sold as Bacote® and Zirmel® respectively.

PAPERBacote® 20 & XL are modified zirconium solutions with improved stability in respect of elevated temperatures, pH, and of hydrolysis when diluted.

Bacote® consists of a clear, aqueous alkaline zirconium. There is a slight ammonia odour associated with Bacote®, and ammonia is released upon evaporation. There is no odour associated after curing. Formaldehyde free and with FDA and BfR approvals they are the crosslinkers of choice at mills worldwide.

MEL also offer Zirmel® & Zirmel XL which contains no ammonia.

COATINGS AND ADHESIVESThe properties of zirconium compounds lend themselves to the manufacture of coating formulations for applications as varied as roofs, textiles and food packaging. MEL XL crosslinkers offer a cost effective solution for improved coating performance.

CROSSLINKINGPolymers such as guar and guar derivatives are used extensively as gelling agents in hydraulic fracturing fluids. To improve the efficiency of these fluids, crosslinking agents can be added.

OIL & GASOur Zircross™ product line features several aqueous based zirconium crosslinkers that meet the needs of various applications within the fracking industry. Our products are commonly used in crosslinking polysaccharides such as starch, guar gum, cellulose and their derivatives. Zircross™ offers options for both low and high pH applications and can be applied to meet multiple viscosity needs.

AEROSPACE

Ceramic coatings applied to gas turbine engines have been shown to enhance performance with regards to fuel efficiency.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

Zirconia toughened aluminas are high strength, low weight materials which can resist impact from high-velocity projectiles.

COMMUNICATIONS

Yttria doped zirconia materials are used for fiber optic communication systems, providing secure, mobile telecommunications in potentially harsh environments.

All commercial and development materials comply with relevant REACH and TSCA regulations; any development materials that are not on the TSCA list are supplied for R&D use only under the TSCA regulations.
