Welcome 2012

Welcome to the 2012 Melbourne School Strings and Bands Festival.Welcome to the 24th year of the Melbourne School Bands and String Festival. The Festival continues to be a major focal point for school and community bands and orchestras across Victoria, and we welcome groups from as far away as Queensland and Western Australia.

The Festival provides a focussed educational experience designed to give feedback to conductors and musicians in what they are doing well, and what they can improve. School bands and orchestras will receive a rating on general criteria and all groups will receive a gold, silver, bronze or merit award.

The Festival encourages participants to view their work in a broader context of music written from all around the world from many different eras and cultures. The Festival adjudicators, on stage tutors, off stage tutors/clinicians, and conducting mentors are scheduled to help bands and orchestras improve their teamwork through music making, and to encourage student musicians to continue playing for the rest of their lives – Music Play For Life. Our thanks for the partnerships with a number of organisations so that the Festival can provide a comprehensive program to assist schools to develop their ensembles and achieve higher standards. In particular our thanks to the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association (Victoria) for providing mentors to offer a conducting tutorial to each conductor.

Our Chief Adjudicators are professional musicians and music educators with strong international profiles. Mark Eager comes from the United Kingdom and is new to the Festival; Sandra Dackow, from the USA, has accepted our invitation to return to the Festival to follow up her outstanding work last year; and Robert Burke, Head of School Monash University School of Music – Conservatorium, will head the adjudication team in the Jazz Ensemble genre. The Chief Adjudicators will work with groups on stage immediately after they perform to give them feedback, and perhaps try out some different ideas. There are many different ways to achieve artistic goals. Sometimes a different approach can help.

The Chief Adjudicators are supported by the Deputy Chief Adjudicators and a panel of specialists, who will not only comment on their whole performance, but will focus on a particular section of the performance on stage. This is to ensure more students will be acknowledged for their ensemble performance skills, whether playing a solo, or playing in the accompanying section. We are delighted with the expertise these musicians will bring to the festival.

Depending on the section, students will have an off stage tutorial which may be a listening task as though they are adjudicators, a critical listening session focussing on particular elements of music, optimising preparation for best performance or a review of their performance.

Technology plays a strong part in recording: for posterity, the stage performance, for review, video recording of the performance and audio recordings of spoken feedback offered by each adjudicator, and for listening and learning, a micro lab in the off stage tutorial. The performance will also be streamed online through RIVUS so parents, friends and supporters anywhere in the world can experience the performance of their chosen band at the festival.

The Gala Concert is a night of celebration of excellence in bands and orchestras. This night features performances of top school groups in senior and younger sections that have previously performed at the festival, plus two guest ensembles. They are The Monash University Wind Symphony and The Grainger Wind Symphony conducted by the Chief Adjudicator Mark Eager (UK). We are proud that Dean returns to compere the Gala Concert. Director and their representatives will receive their awards through the concert, with the Gold Awards presented on stage. There will be other exciting items in the program. Come and join the celebration. It starts at 7.00pm with pre-concert foyer music to be enjoyed as you approach the Robert Blackwood Hall.

As the new Festival organisers, Sam and Roland, acknowledge the sustained work of Michael Jongebloed for his work as Festival Director for 11 years. In particular his vision in shaping the Festival program, work on the Prescribed Lists, and support for schools were outstanding. The structure of the Festival is unchanged as it works very well and remains popular with directors.

Enjoy and celebrate the excellence the school bands and orchestras bring to your lives. Appreciate the experts in music performance who have willingly given their time to make this Music Festival a special event. Please acknowledge the many volunteers who make the Festival run so smoothly. Finally please support the sponsors of the Festival, for without their financial contribution, the Festival could not run. We are particularly appreciative of the enormous support from the directors and staff of Allans Billy Hyde.

Upmarket, well-balanced and affordable German stringed

instruments for students and professionals.

Heinrich Gill source the wood for their instruments from European sources,

including spruce from the Austrian Alps and maple from Bosnia and the

Carpathian mountains. The wood is then stored and aged for years, as per

tradition, in a storage barn. The wood dries slowly and naturally which ensures

no risk of shrinking, warping or cracking for years to come. This method ensures

Heinrich Gill violins & cellos are of the highest quality.

Mark Eager – Concert Band Chief AdjudicatorMark Eager is a highly experienced and exciting conductor with a wealth of knowledge in the orchestral & wind sinfonia fields. Underpinning this is his experience as a world-class player, having worked full time with the BBC National Orchestra Wales as Principal Trombone and Soloist for 14 years. Since his appointment as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of The Welsh Sinfonia in 2006 Mark has commissioned and premiered new works and has diversified the WS repertoire by addressing audiences and introducing them to the music of composers such as Takemitsu and Piazzolla, this has helped to develop new audiences who enjoy this intimate and personal approach. Mark’s skills as an artistic director come from a clear grasp of musical idioms, developed from his extra studies as a pianist and violinist. Mark has a particular talent for and is dedicated to working with young people. Since his appointment as Conductor of Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra in 2008 he has provided students with challenging repertoire and professional coaching to enhance their overall educational experience. Mark is also Principal Conductor of Hertfordshire Wind Sinfonia where he is passionate about the serious wind repertoire including programming pieces by Stravinsky, Hindemith, Holst, Florent Schmitt, Persichetti and more recently Kenneth Hesketh.

Roy Hamilton – Concert Band Deputy Chief AdjudicatorRoy graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1971 with a B.A.(hon), DipEd, majoring in Music and History. He began his teaching career at Sunshine High School in 1972. Roy worked side by side with Derek Humphries to develop a community organisation called the Westgate Concert Band. When Derek retired from regular participation in the band (1994), Roy became Musical Director. For over 30 years Roy has conducted a range of groups: School bands, Community bands and over 35 Musical Productions. In 1997, Roy instigated the idea of running a Bands Festival for a group of community Concert Bands A feature is the presence of a Critical Friend who provides on- stage feedback to the band. 2003 was Roy's final year as a full time music teacher/Assistant Principal. In retirement, he hopes to offer music workshops to schools (both primary and secondary) and to be available as a guest conductor for school concert bands. He will continue as Musical Director of the Westgate Concert Band. Its 25th anniversary in September 2004 was a another milestone in his musical life.

Robert Burke – Jazz Ensembles Chief AdjudicatorRobert Burke has enjoyed a diverse and wide-ranging career as a performer, composer and educator in music. Although classically trained on the clarinet and saxophones, his main focus as a performer has been on jazz and popular rock, including eight years performing and composing with Kate Ceberano and fifteen years with ARIA award-winning band The Black Sorrows.
