MLS#1930342 Brand New Listing Melissa Newman, Knox County neighbor publishes five star novel By SONYA JONES Special to The CJ Our neighbor over in Knox County has published a novel. Our neighbor’s name is Melissa Newman, and she currently serves as director of the Union College Alumni Association. Not long ago Melissa Newman was known in these parts as editor and publisher of the London News Journal. She started as a cub reporter and worked her way up. The title of Newman’s novel is Sister Blackberry, and it’s already posted on amazon.com to a five star rating. Sister Blackberry is dedicated to Melissa Newman’s mother, Nellie Louise Martin-Dozier (1936-2001). Newman says she has papers to prove that almost every Dozier in the state of Kentucky is related to the next one, and she’s related to them all. Readers have made comments such as, “I couldn’t stop reading this book.” Or, “It really ought to be made into a film.” Since much of the crucial action in Sister Blackberry is set on a farm off Hwy. 80, we get the picture early in the book that Newman is writing about rural Kentucky. Her scenes are set just down the road from us. When Newman was a child, her family spent many summer days in a cabin on Lake Cumberland near Burnside. Newman says she has strong memories of our town by the lake, and they show up, transposed to fiction, in her novel. Some of Newman’s best writing in Sister Blackberry deals with the Kentucky landscape. Clearly, she loves the state’s mountains and lakes. Sister Blackberry is a mystery, so it would be unfair to you, the reader, to divulge the plot fully – or all of the secrets that drive the story line. Suffice it to say that words such as “compelling” and “gripping” manage to convey some of the urgency Newman packs into the story of Doris, who runs away to Cleveland to try and escape the cruelty of gossip leveled at her because she is different. Doris eventually comes back home to Rayes County with her husband Freeman. Before they drive back south, however, we get to meet a host of interesting characters in Madessy’s diner where Doris, known up north as the royal “Miss Deegee,” and Freeman, an affectionate and clumsy intellectual who knows most everything about literature, meet. Their coming together is one of the most touching moments in postmodern fiction. Told primarily through the eyes of 87-year-old Viola Garland, or Mamaw, Newman’s novel may remind readers of the high days of the Southern Literary Renaissance when Robert Penn Warren, who hailed from Guthrie, Ky., was wielding his pen. Sister Blackberry is multi- generational, and what unforgettable characters Newman doth create with her ear for Southern speech and lyrical prose. Newman’s sense of humor helps to leaven a situation that could be overly dramatic without a little laughter to help the granddaughters digest the last tall tale their Mamaw has in store for them. Mamaw doesn’t get to play the last card, however, as a sheriff named Rosen steps in to trick her into thinking that the body that has been discovered after 60 years’ duration is a woman instead of a man. Improbable as it may sound, Mamaw stole a baby half a century ago that prompted the murder of the child’s abusing father. Out of love for the child’s mother, her good friend, Janie Cole who is murdered in a fit of rage by her husband Bick, Viola raised the child, who turns out to be Doris, as her own. Viola and Janie were pregnant at the same time, but Viola’s child was stillborn. When a Pentecostal minister tried to kill Janie’s baby because she was born “deformed,” Viola stepped in to save the child’s life. She carried this secret with her into a nursing home where, at long last, she felt compelled to share the truth with her granddaughters. Melissa Newman draws from the time-honored Southern tradition of using characters who differ from Mr. and Mrs. Main Street to say that “the heart is a lonely hunter” in its search for acceptance and love. Langley, for instance, is straight from the pages of the small town South with its love of the Gothic. He is a gender- bender for certain, and it is his honesty in seeking to return a $2 bill that puts him in a position to become a hero in the novel. Newman’s shifts in time frame, from 1936 to the present, work to fortify the structure of the book. Her pacing is excellent. Her ability to hold the reader’s attention never sags. Newman is scheduled to hold a book signing at Joseph Beth Booksellers in Lexington Green on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. If you want your copy of Sister Blackberry sooner, or if you need a last minute holiday gift, you can order Sister Blackberry, published by Whiskey Creek Press, from amazon.com and get your package back in two days by priority mail. If you don’t read another book in the new year, treat yourself to this one. Sister Blackberry is a delicious feast of Southern speech and eastern Kentucky culture, a mysterious unfolding of the heart’s ability to find its way home to love, as Eudora Welty once wrote, even when it forgets. Melissa Newman is the freshest talent I’ve seen since Carson McCullers. Melissa Newman
