Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El

Rebbe Nachmann of Bratzlav, who is remembered and venerated, never “made it” to Jerusalem. His Kever, final resting place in Uman, today is a “shrine,” attracting tens of thousands of people each year, both his followers and those who are convinced that there is something very special there.

However, his Hasidim, disciples, did bring the Rebbe’s chair, piece by piece,

with them to Jerusalem. In a far corner of Mea Shearim, a very religious neighborhood of Jerusalem, is a synagogue. You climb the steps and enter a lovely, large, ornate Beit Midrash, house of study/synagogue. Time stops here, and there it is on the small Bima -- the chair of Rebbe Nachman.

Like most of us Rebbe Nachman lived in many worlds - not always so accepting. Thus, the dream of Jerusalem was about a time, sometime, when life would be a bit better, kinder, more gentle. More than a physical place on the map, Jerusalem is a place in our hearts. I guess that is what hope, possibilities, and faith are all about.

I always thought I understood Rebbe Nachman’s message Wherever I go I am going to Jerusalem -- pretty simple, no commentary necessary.

His dream was unrealized but he was convinced that Jerusalem was within his reach.

As I write, I am spending over two weeks with Leah, our daughter Orah from London and two of our grandchildren, Yehudah and Akiva. We are with family living in the Shomron, others on a religious kibbutz Sdei Eliyahu in Beit Shean the Jordan Valley. We are with many nephews and nieces who are Bratzlav, walking the

streets of Jerusalem, standing and praying at the Kotel. For all of us the takeaway is that this sacred place transforms us, uplifts us.

Jerusalem. with all its promises and even challenges, remains a promise waiting to be fulfilled, both personal and collective.

Jerusalem is about a dream -- a place both in time and space you can touch and feel. It‘s about an eternal conversation about those before us, the self, and our faith, beliefs and God. I leave Jerusalem as Rebbe Nachman reminds me, very

different than when I arrived, personally comforted, and with hope restored. The promise remains within reach.

As the psalmist reminds us: For your servants have cherished her stones and favored her dust. Psalm 102.

President’s Report

How does one evaluate twelve months of effort, hard work and evolving accomplishment? I really don’t know,

other than to say that we, your elected Executive Committee, have followed our planned agenda as closely as possible. We feel very proud to have overcome many unanticipated obstacles and challenges to place our shul in a positive, forward looking position at the end of our first year. This

achievement required cooperative teamwork with all the arms of our congregation – a wise and understanding clergy, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, working committees, and helpful input from so many congregants.

Our clergy staff, particularly Rabbi Charles Sherman, guided us at every step with support from our vibrant trio consisting of the two Baal Tefilot, Rabbi Kevin Bernstein and David Seltzer plus Baal Korei Rabbi Robert Alpert. This excellent team help to fulfill our spiritual needs and carry on the traditions of our congregation most amiably. For the coming High Holidays, the team will once again be augmented by Cantor Gordon Piltch to assure beautiful and inspirational services. The clergy staff is indeed impressive and will help us to attract new members.

Over the year we had a variety of programs, events wonderfully produced by Men’s Club, Sisterhood and dedicated committees that served to enrich our social and adult educational experience for MBIEE and for the Old York Road corridor community. We now have a recognized and somewhat envied place in this Kehillah, a status that we are striving to use to our advantage to enlarge the MBIEE community.

Among the highlights of the past year have been:

• Our sports events arranged by Andy Black and the Men’s Club

• Vodkas and Latkas – a new Sisterhood tradition and, hopefully, permanent fixture on our calendar

• The B’not Mitzvah Shabbat on June 2 of congregants, Judy Baker, Rebecca Gellman and Libby Goldman, which will lead other women to join in and enjoy the fruitful reward of accomplishing this gigantic mitzvah for themselves

• The establishment of the Lewis Lisman Distinguished Speaker Series supported by the generosity of Jean Lisman

We now look forward to “A Taste of Melrose”, an innovative part of the 2018-2019 membership drive. The first “Taste of Melrose” will be Shabbat morning, June 30. It will give us the opportunity to show off what we do and what we are, particularly why we call ourselves The Little Shul with the Big Heart. Visitors will be treated to lunch, and hopefully will be favorably impressed by our warm, inclusive

nature that we make evident just by being ourselves. Two more “Tastes” are scheduled for mid-July and early August. They are designed to encourage more guests, including your friends and neighbors, to consider MBIEE as their shul. All we need is great attendance and the willingness to meet, greet, and make visitors comfortable.

Also, on the agenda for the summer is a repeat hosting of the Israeli Scouts on Thursday evening August 9 with a light dinner and great Israeli entertainment. Mark your calendar so you don’t miss out on this terrific mid-summer party at Melrose.

To complete my assessment, I must address our current financial status, which is much healthier today than 12 months ago. At the end of our fiscal year we are projecting a potential decrease in the perpetual deficit by approximately 20-30 %, from a high of $50,000. This has been accomplished by more profitable events, a major increase in donations and sponsorships, some sizeable endowments and successful matching funds, and reduced spending where possible. I would like to specifically acknowledge Edythe Kaplan’s gift of her house, which turns into cash on the settlement day, June 26. We plan to analyze our budget regularly to see where we can improve even more next year. A good fiscal status will help to secure the future of MBIEE for many years to come and will encourage others to consider MBIEE as a good investment. Remember: All is strong, healthy, and positive at Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El, and with your continued help and support we will move onward and upward this coming year.

Libby and I wish everyone a joyous, healthy, and relaxing summer. Enjoy the warm, good weather (hopefully), and remember that the ‘Little Shul with the Big Heart” is alive and well.

Shalom, Ron

A Tisha B’Av Memory

I was working on the Lower East Side during the weeks preceding Tisha B’Av, the anniversary of the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem, a day of fasting and mourning for all traditional Jews. I had never heard of Tisha B’Av before that summer.

On Tisha B’Av the bimah was shrouded with black curtains, and only a few candles lit the murky room. The congregants, sitting on the floor in the traditional position of mourning, chanted dirges from the Book of Lamentations … that Tisha B’Av I felt an unexpected sense of pride … watching the old men, my kinsmen, keeping our imperiled history alive.

I suppose I felt a certain envy too…. Just seven years, earlier, three men, Andy Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney, had been martyred because they were willing to die for freedom…. the

murders at Kent State had occurred only two years before. … (We) had not created ceremonies to commemorate those tragedies, which shook a generation. Would my grandchildren know anything about them? There is no liberation without the memory of liberation, or the memory of oppression. The old men in their murky downtown shuls were remembering. That

precious feature of their religion - my religion - was entirely absent from the politics that had been my faith for nearly a decade.

An Orphan in History, page 164, by Paul Cowan,

Tisha B’Av - A Bad Day in History

An uncanny array of tragic events in Jewish history occurred on Tisha B’Av:

• Return of the spies from Canaan with frightening reports, greatly discouraging the Israelites

• Destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BC

• Destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 AD

• Defeat of the Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans

• Expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290

• Expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492

Message from Leadership

This will be the last report from the presidium. Our new co-Presidents are Helene Katz and Margo Kuno. We wish them mazel tov and hope that everyone will show their support for Sisterhood meetings and programs.

We have planned several events for the 5779/2018-2019 year. These include:

• Wine and desserts with the Women of KI

• High Holiday Greetings Booklet

• Decorating the sukkah

• Opening brunch

• Latkas, Vodkas, and Tschkas (with a new twist this year!)

• Sisterhood Shabbat

• Virtual Purim cards (mishloach manot)

• Sylvia Cohen Book Club

• Women’s Seder

These programs take a great deal of planning and preparation. Let’s help our new co-presidents by volunteering to assist with any or all of these events.

It has been an honor to serve as your presidium!

Torah Fund Event

Sisterhood’s Torah Fund of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism event, was held on Wednesday evening, May 9. It focused on Zacharias Frankel College, part of Potsdam University in Germany, where a Conservative rabbi, Nitzan Stein Kokin, recently was ordained at the College; this was a startling event, because it was the first ordination of a Conservative rabbi in Germany since the Holocaust. The college receives support from the Torah Fund campaign.

The program began at 6 pm with a D’var Torah by MBIEE’s former spiritual leader, Rabbi Howard Avruhm Addison. There followed tributes to the Woman of Achievement honorees for 2018, Karen Joseph Berger and Regina “Reggie” Maizel. The awards were presented by two former honorees and pillars of our Shul, Beatrice Barrish and Mildred Brooks.

Following a dinner of Polish delicacies to match the theme of the evening, there was a presentation on “Polish Jews: Tiny Rebirth” by Gratz College Associate Professor of History, Dr. Michael Steinlauf. He reviewed the history of the Jews in Poland up to the catastrophic events of World War II, especially the Holocaust in which 3 million of the 3.5

million Polish Jews were murdered.

Then came 1989, the miraculous year when the Soviet Union dissolved and Poland became a free nation. From the ashes of history grew a new Jewish community, which today numbers about 40,000. Through his frequent trips to Poland, especially the traditionally Jewish city of Cracow, Dr. Steinlauf witnessed the rebirth, including the building of a museum of Jewish history and culture in Poland.

The Torah Fund event was a blend of good fellowship, tasty food, and deep insights into a area of the world from which so many American Jews originate.

The Shofar extends a Yasher Koach to Ariana Burrows for organizing the event and a Mazel Tov to Ariana and Susie Markowitz for their recent induction as officers of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Women’s League.

Recipe for the Season: 4th of July No-Bake Cake Contributed by Sharon Sussman

You’ll need: 1 aluminum or glass lasagna-style baking dish

2 pre-made pound cakes

1 or 2 cartons of fresh blueberries

1 or 2 cartons of fresh strawberries - sliced thin

1 large carton of “Cool whip” style whipped topping or, if

parve, 2 cartons of Rich Whip, prepared

Directions:

Slice pound cakes into thin slices, about 1/4” thick.

Layer first layer of cake on lasagna dish. Then add a layer of

whipped topping, not too thick.

Then add a second layer of cake followed by whipped

topping. The last layer is fruit, with blueberries

on top left corner as stars, and the slices of strawberry as the

“stripes” arranged as such.

Fresh fruit is preferable to frozen, because frozen fruit

sometimes runs.

The cake can be kept in the freezer until ready to serve.

Bon Appétit! - בתאבון

The next issue of The Shofar will be in the hands of our congregants just before Rosh Hashanah. The editors are hoping that readers will submit recipes for dishes that have been traditionally enjoyed by their families on and around the High Holidays. Please submit recipes to [email protected].

Lewis Lisman Distinguished Speaker Program The first Lewis Lisman Distinguished Speaker Series

program was held on the evening of Saturday, May 5, 2018 at MBIEE. It featured Dr. Paul Finkelman, President of Gratz College., who spoke on the topic, “Is the Supreme Court a Friend of the Jews?”

Dr. Finkleman addressed a full house in the MBIEE sanctuary. He reviewed the Jewish members of the US Supreme Court beginning with Louis Brandeis and continuing to the present Court, which includes three Jews. He made the provocative argument that not all Jewish justices have been sympathetic to Jewish causes, citing the late Justice Felix Frankfurter as having supported or written decisions unsympathetic to the problems of religious and racial minorities. He reviewed decisions handed down by the Court since the early 19th century that impacted the small, but growing population of Jewish Americans. These included the controversial case of 1892 (Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States ) for which Justice David Brewer wrote the majority opinion; Justice Brewer’s decision included the comment that “this is a Christian nation.”

The lecture was followed by dinner and a dessert buffet, during which there was a stimulating question-and-answer session with Dr. Finkelman, who is now an honorary member of our congregation. As expected, our attendees challenged the speaker with questions, resulting in a brisk and informative discussion. By every measure, the evening fulfilled all expectations.

The Lewis Lisman Endowment perpetuates the memory of Mr. Lisman by the generous contribution of his wife, Jean Lisman. The Endowment provides formal support for MBIEE’s Scholar-in-Residence program and establishes a fund to which congregants may direct their contributions.

MBIEE Anniversary Celebration A Broadway Cabaret and More!

On Sunday evening, November 4, 2018, we are planning a Gala Broadway Cabaret to celebrate sixty plus years of Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El, the Little Shul with the Big Heart. Along with a professional Broadway performance featuring top artists, including Ari Sussman on the piano, there will be an elegant dessert buffet for all attendees. Prior to the show, there will be a patron reception with hors d’oeuvres and drinks where patrons can meet and greet the artists. Finally, three prominent congregants - Len Cohen, Natalie Gabai, and Joe Pressman - will be honored for their service to our shul.

This event is a major fundraiser for the synagogue, and we will be creating an ad journal for the gala night. Your participation is important; we are depending on our congregants to place personal ads and to solicit ads from

Inclusion Committee

We are very proud to report that through donations to the Inclusion Fund supporting our initiatives, we are completing the final stage of our sound system update. This summer, John Dezell from Sound Designs will be installing speakers in the social hall. In addition, Judy Baker, David and Nada Berd, and Mitchell and Sandy Pinsly have generously donated 4 additional assistive listening devices. This brings our total to 8 just in time for the High Holidays. We are so pleased that congregants and guests have availed themselves of these devices both at services and events. A second tutorial for using them is being planned. Much appreciation to Sandy Pinsly for so competently taking the lead on the sound system project over the past two years.

This April, MBIEE brought Passover to Artis Senior Living, the facility with whom we have partnered. We titled our program "Passover Through Song and Story." Phyllis Salem, local singer and songwriter, donated her considerable talent that afternoon. She led the singing as we went through a Passover song book that our group prepared and distributed. Between songs, Fran provided the holiday story. Following this most successful program, our members served Passover snacks to over 30 attendees and then socialized with residents and guests. The MBIEE volunteers that day: Stan and Millie Brooks, Ron and Libby Goldman, Lois Goldstein, Rhoda Goodman, Jean Lisman, Sandy Pinsly, Joe Pressman, Sheila Richman and Honey Zazoff. We continue to provide other services to Artis as well. Jean Lisman brings her lovable dog, CeCe, to the facility 6 mornings a month for much anticipated and appreciated pet therapy. Several of us have participated in the monthly Friday afternoon Shabbat service. Many other options are available.

If you are interested in joining our group for future programs at Artis or contributing to the Inclusion Fund, please contact us through the office or at [email protected]. We appreciate everyone's support!

Men’s Club The year has wrapped up, and we have a new slate of

officers for next year. Mitchell Pinsly and Ben Burrows will serve as co-Presidents. Jack Stecki will be Vice President. Don Wittenberg will be Secretary and Len Cohen, Treasurer. At our final meeting, the Men’s Club Treasury was in good shape and we are giving $6,000.00 to the shul.

Planning for next year will take place over the summer. Please come out and support the new/old board and join in the planning.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve over the last two years. Have a great summer.

Andy Black, Men’s Club President

Membership Committee Last year we recruited 29 new members (a record year),

and we hope to do even better in the coming year.

The New Members Guide and the Guide to Our Services will be ready for distribution by the High Holidays.

Over the summer we will feature something new: “A Taste of Melrose” will be offered on three Shabbat

mornings - June 30 and two other dates in July and August.

Our members are the key element in ensuring the success of this exciting new program. Please try to attend on June 30 and on the two other chosen Shabbat mornings. We just need to be ourselves - warm and welcoming to guests who are interested in our shul.

Hugs to all, Sharon Sussman, Membership Vice President

Mazel Tov to Our B’not Mitzvah

Judy Baker

Libby Butler Goldman

Rebecca Gellman

On Shabbat morning, June 2, 2018 MBIEE celebrated the B’not Mitzvah of three of our most devoted congregants. The chapel in the main building of KI was filled to capacity by congregants and relatives and friends of the honorees. They formally became B’not Mitzvah by reciting the blessings for the maftir aliyah and chanting portions of the Haftarah. In their addresses to the congregation, Judy, Rebecca, and Libby emphasized the importance of this landmark event in their lives, which was made more significant by the fact that prevailing customs did not permit Judy or Libby even to ascend to the bimah when they were 13 years old. Ariana Burrows was their Bat Mitzvah teacher.

Yizkor Book The forms for adding the name of a deceased love one to the High Holiday Yizkor Book of Remembrance will be mailed to congregants in early July. Forms should be returned to the MBIEE office by August 15. Thank you for your cooperation.

Memorial Plaques Memorialize your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque that will be displayed on the walls of the MBIEE sanctuary in perpetuity. A plaque guarantees that Kaddish will be recited on each yahrzeit. For details, call Gunther Kirchheimer through the MBIEE office.

Tree of Life For happier occasions, consider honoring an important Simcha - birth of a child, a special birthday, a special anniversary, or an honor - by purchasing a leaf or rock on the MBIEE Tree of Life, displayed in our lobby. Call the MBIEE office for an application.

Condolences To Josh Kasdin and Tovah Kasdin, children of long-time MBIEE congregant and benefactor, Dr. Sharon Kasdin, who passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018

To Lois Goldstein, wife of Seymour Goldstein and to his children, Lisa Goldstein (Mark Hastings) and Margie Goldstein (Barbara Blount)

Yahrzeits - Condolences - Memorials

Honor and Remember: It is fitting that a member of the family be present at the minyan on the day of the yahrzeit. Anyone observing a yahrzeit is entitled to an aliyah, which is arranged by contacting Warren Nachmann through the MBIEE office. Also, the name of the remembered is announced from the pulpit on the Shabbat morning preceding the week of the yahrzeit. The memory of your loved one can be honored by making a contribution to the MBIEE Yahrzeit Fund, sponsoring a Shabbat Kiddush, or purchasing a Memorial Plaque.
