Monday 21st August, 2017

From the Principal's deskDistrict AthleticsBraving the cold, wind and rain, a number of our students energetically represented MPS at the District Athletics. Two days of track and field events, saw several of our students successfully obtain a position of 1st, 2nd or 3rd for their events. Well done to all of the students who were awarded ribbons for their performance. Congratulations to our students who were the age group champion for their age group. These students were awarded a medallion for their amazing work. Melton Primary won the school shield for being the overall champions. Well done to all of our students, we are extremely proud of your efforts and performance. Thank you to Miss Morrissy, Mrs Partridge, Miss Marriott and Miss Taylor for your organisation and supervision on the days. Good luck to all of our students who will go onto represent our district at the divisional athletics on the 13th September.

Child Safe StandardsEveryone has the right to be safe and protected from abuse. At Melton Primary School we have an embedded organisational culture of child safety. If you suspect something, have questions or concerns in relation to any child, say something. We are able to provide support, assistance and help on what to do next. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect children from abuse.

School ReviewLast week we participated in our first day of a two day school review. On this day an independent reviewer, 2 challenge Principals, Senior Educational Improvement Leader, School Council President and the senior leadership team reviewed the school’s performance over the past few years. Prior to the day the school had completed an extensive self evaluation document highlighting successes, gaps and opportunities for further development. Day 2 of the review will be spent on setting the direction, goals and targets of the next 4 years. Thank you to all of the members of our community who have provided feedback that assisted with the school self evaluation.

From the Principal's deskOnline AssemblyLast week Mr Gallagher and our school captains hosted our updated online assembly. Thank you to those families that tuned in and enjoyed the opportunity to see your child/ren receive their student of the week award. As we delayed assembly a fortnight ago, we will host another assembly online this week.

Family Art ShowTo highlight different areas of our curriculum, this year we are hosting a family art show in term 4. This show will provide families with the opportunity to come together and create artworks whilst also viewing and admiring the wonderful work that has been completed by our students. Stay tuned as more details are published in the next newsletter.

Parent Opinion Survey 2017A reminder that if you were randomly selected to participate in our parent opinion survey, it needs to be completed by 27th August. Reporting student achievement in semester 2.During semester 2, your child’s learning will be reported to you via two platforms.

Throughout the term, via Class Dojo, you will receive updates about how your child is progressing with their individual learning goals in reading, writing and mathematics. At the

end of the semester you will receive a hard copy of your child’s results in relation to the standards of the Victorian Curriculum, their progress in the classroom with effort and

behaviour and updated learning goals for your child to work towards in 2018.This year we have trialled using Kept me as a platform to communicate student

achievement. Although we were able to provide examples of student learning, our parent community is not engaging in Kept me as we would have hoped. Which is why we have

chosen to use Class Dojo to communicate student progress as a greater percentage of our families access and communicate with us via Class Dojo. If you are yet to set up an account on Class Dojo, please speak to your classroom teacher for some support.

If you would like your child’s Kept me portfolio printed into hard copy format, please contact the office and we will ensure that a copy of your child’s story is sent home.

Year 5Look what we’ve been doing in Inquiry:

The grade 5 students believe

keeping fit and healthy is very

important for kids and adults.

The students decided to

promote the importance of

this through various sport

clinics during their lunch

times and preparing

informative booklets about

healthy eating and how to

cope with stress. Check out

our amazing students running

their clinics:

We had lots of fun running our netball clinic. We practiced passing, shooting and defending with the students and we finished with a mini game. All the participants trained well and the two students who received a nike drink bottle for showing the most support and effort were Izale from 4C and Sarah from 4C. Jelena, Nomeneta, Emily and Mia.

Our basketball clinic went really well. All the participants listened and followed all the instructions we gave. We hope the students had fun and learnt some new skills for basketball. Kade, Zac and Jake.

Our obstacle course ran really well. The students had fun and everyone was jumping up and down with joy on their faces. Kiera and Abuk.

Please donate

your old mobile

phones at the office.

Some Year 5 students

are raising support

for gorillas as a part of their inquiry project. Please help.

Djerriwarrh Festival Update

Dear Parents and Families,

The Djerriwarrh Festival, which will be held on Saturday 18th November, is drawing closer. The festival committee have decided that this year’s theme will be: ‘I Belong. A Celebration of our Community’. Melton Primary School will be representing this theme by celebrating the different cultures which make up our school community. We will be sending out permission forms to take part in Melton Primary School’s entry for the Street Parade very shortly so please keep an eye out for this form in the coming weeks. If you would like to help out with the preparations for the day please contact Mrs Collins or Mr Roberts. We are particularly looking for students who have national costume and would be prepared to wear it in the parade. If you would be able to help out with this it would be much appreciated.

Chaplaincy

ProgramHello, my name is Marina Dyson and I’ve been the chaplain at MPS

since September 2015 and in that time have had the chance to meet and work with a number of our families and their children.

Chaplains pastorally care for the members of school and wider communities. They respond to issues and critical incidents as they

arise, as well as facilitating relationship building, small group delivery and programs to ensure improved wellbeing outcomes for

young people and their communities.

The kinds of issues that a chaplain deals with can include: social/ relationship issues, peer relationships, loneliness and bullying;

family relationship issues;the development of the self - sense of purpose, self-esteem, and

mental health; dealing with grief and loss and managing emotions.

Fun facts: I have experience working as a teacher and counsellor.

I’m married with a 21 year old son.

I enjoy exercising, eating out, spending time with family and friends and relaxing.

What I enjoy most about my role is being able to get to know our school community and making myself available when support is needed. If we haven’t yet met or even if we have, please drop in for a cuppa and a chat. I’m available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment. Please contact the office or drop by the Welfare Office located in the BER building.

I look forward to meeting you!

Regards

Marina Dyson
