Mid-year report to New Day AsiaJune 4th 2012, CWS HK
Achievements these past 6 months• 40 girls have been supported • 11 new girls joined the shelter•All the girls benefited from regular medical check-ups and basic counselling•6 girls were provided legal support to obtain their birth certificate or their citizenship and identity card•6 girls were reintegrated with their families •3 girls left the shelter (one with her baby) to live in an independent living facility•8 girls were rehabilitated for long term support •11 girls received formal education training•5 girls benefited from different vocational training skills (caregiver, housekeeping…)
Programmes Challenges
• No emergency shelter services provided for girls who are above 18 years old
• Not enough human resources
• Increase in office rent and security guard’s salary
• Diverse backgrounds and ages living under the same roof create integration challenges
• Lack of professional psychosocial counselor
Challenges in the context of Nepal
• Difficulty in securing long-term support as our beneficiaries need special individual attention. Many organizations find it difficult to handle the girls and regularly send them back to Shakti Samuha, which is not able to provide long-term residence
• Difficulty to protect our staff in the field when they conduct their outreach work (e.g. bars, hotels, restaurants…)
• It is possible that the girls’ own families actually use them as a source of income and return them to sex work
• Irregular support from the different Government bodies
• Difficulty to prepare the birth certificates and citizenship cards of certain girls because their families are out of reach
• Nepal Shakti Samuha: Sept 29 – Oct 1
• China LOVEQTRA
• India Kalki
