PRESIDENTS REPORT APRIL 2016

I am happy to advise our membership that Ray Cullen has stepped up to be our President for the coming Lions Year; I know we will be in very good hands. He is organising his executive helpers so we will await hearing who is in the team.We are back in the swing of another Lions year with our members attending to help at Balloons over Waikato late last month, and the Commsafe Golf Tournament held yesterday at Te Awamutu Golf Course.Six of our members attended Balloons Over Waikato, Grahame and I went the first morning (Wednesday) to the lake, there was thick fog so no balloons were able to fly but they all inflated and remained tethered. It is a fantastic sight to see. We were rattling buckets and accepting donations for Lions from the large number of people present. There were lots of families with little kiddies wide eyed up early in the dark. A large number of people do not carry cash these days but those who did so were only too happy to donate to Lions. Jim and Ann attended on the Friday morning at the lake, helping people get into and out of the tethered balloon, the balloons were able to ascend and head off into wide blue yonder on the Friday. Kevin and Cheryl attended the Saturday Night- Glow where Kevin was a team leader for quite a large team keeping an eye on crowd control, lost children etc. Kevin gave a report at our last meeting which was very interesting.Six of our members attended the Commsafe Golf Tournament yesterday, the weather was a bit iffy but by afternoon the sky was blue and it was very pleasant. Ray C and Tony were on the BBQ cooking the sausages, onions and wrapping in bread. Don and Warwick were gainfully employed with various tasks around the course. Rachel and I were on the 12th hole either extracting $20 from teams so they take par for the course and walk to the next hole, or play the hole and not hand over any money. 4 people in a team. They started off out for a good days fun, approaching our area fairly quietly saying“ we’ll play the hole, we came to play golf,” but by early afternoon you knew a team was approaching by the laughter and chatter and mostly one member of the team would just pull out $20 and off they would go in great spirits. At the end of the day back to the club rooms where afternoon tea was provided and lots of noise was going on when prize giving and a raffle were held. I think they would have made quite a bit of money for their cause and it was fun. Thanks everybody for helping out with these two great events. You will be pleased to hear Bruce is back home again. Our fishing trip is this Saturday YES, details separately in Bulletin. We have a great speaker attending our next dinner meeting. See you there.Cheers, Noelene

Editorial:Our April Dinner will be at the “Pirongia Clydesdales Coach House”

This is due to the change of ownership of the Alexandra Hotel and concerns from members about the difficulty in hearing speakers over the hub-bub of background noise there.Information now at hand:April Dinner venue will now be at the “Coach House” see cover pages for times dates and address. The two course dinner will still be good value at $20 per head. There is a well stocked bar and tea or coffee will be available. We will have the venue to ourselves for the evening. Also on site is a sound system and large screen TV for power points.

$500 donated to Fiji via the LCIF. This is an international arm of Lions that specialises in disaster relief. The following is taken directly from the Lions website: “Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) provides grant funding to assist Lions districts in developing and implementing large-scale humanitarian projects. These humanitarian grants help Lions expand their outreach and increase their impact within local and global communities to serve even more people in need around the world.”A lot of support came to help Christchurch, and it is a very simple and effective way for Lions Clubs to help a crisis situation anywhere in the world.

$200 donated to the Te Awamutu Competition Society, to be used toward prizes for the performing arts. A lot of Pirongia children enter and do well in these competitions each year.

The $1,800 donated to Pirongia School was the net profit from the food caravan being at the gala evening. The money is to be used for a new sports equipment shed.

Regarding the $500 set aside for the resuscitator for the TA Birthing Unit, it needs to be noted that a previous amount was agreed upon at our December meeting. We will need to revisit this issue soon to correct any anomaly.

If you haven’t already done so please pay your $65 sub to the Treasurer (An account was included in the March Newsletter)

John Lorimer being presented an award by Paula McWha, for his many years of service organising the Picnic Day for families of children with cancer.

Long service awards were also given to John Young and Blenddyn Sterling.

LegacyDoug Smith is on his deathbed and knowing death is near. His nurse, his wife, daughter and two sons are with him.So he says to his family:“Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses.”“Sybil, you take the apartments over in Pall Mall.”“Jamie, I want you to have the offices in the city centre.”“Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the Thames.”The nurse is overwhelmed by all the valuable property mentioned, and as Doug slips away she says to Sybil, “what a wonderful legacy your husband has left.”“Legacy?” huffs Sybil, “those were his paper rounds.”

Lions Code of Ethics To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the

end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to

accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.

To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and means.

To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.

To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
