Bling it onChristmas baubles don’t just belong on trees. Place them in bowls and vases for an eye-catching centerpiece.

Elegant centerpieceMake your own masterpiece by grouping Christmas ornaments. Or have a candleholder that is reminiscent of traditional Scandinavian handicraft. The simple style fits well in any home.

Fruity scentsClove-decorated oranges are a Swedish Christmas tradition. They are hung in most Swedish doorways and windows. To make them, you need tealight and oranges decorated with spicy cloves. Just mark patterns on your oranges with a toothpick, and leave a four-sided cross where the ribbon goes. Stick the cloves into the holes, then tie a ribbon around the orange and finish with a bow. Hang at the window or on the Christmas tree.

TextilesOne of the best ways to update your home is to add new cushions. If you’re bold enough, opt for bright colours.

Wow!Deck the hall with all sorts of wrapped presents and prolong the festive joy. It’s hard not to be thrilled by our “this is really something else winter collection”. Purple, green and lipstick red meet gold, silver and totally innovative decorations. Perfect for anyone who believes that winter holidays are as much about party, as it is about glamour. The ISIG collection has no limitations!

BrightnessSwedes have always valued and cherished good lights. With winter that lasts 4-5 months, and few hours of daylight, they need to lighten up their homes in various ways. Placing candles and lighting decorations around the home go a long way in creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Gloomy areas are gone, thanks to GLÄNSA (means “shine” in Swedish) lighting collection – chandeliers, drapes, stars, light chains, hanging decoration and table mats - all to create the right holiday setting and mood.

ISIG Candle holder RM35Candle, apple RM25/4pcs.

Candles add cosiness and intimacy whenever they are lit.The light gives a gentle glow that helps you relax and get in a cosy mood.

Few tips that can be of good use when using candles:• Make sure you have at least 30cm between a candle

and inflammable material, like curtains.• Avoid placing a candle on top of or close to a TV. The heat from

the TV can make the candle melt. This also applies to open fires or anythingelse that may radiate or generate heat.

• If the candle burns down into a candleholder, it might break. In some worst cases, it can become so overheated as to set fire to tablecloths.

Be sure to put the candle out when it’s at least 2cm high.• The easiest way to get rid of wax on cloth, napkins, etc is to let the wax harden and then

take it away. Or put it all in the freezer to harden the wax. A practical tip is to place aplastic bag with ice cubes on it. If you still have wax left, put the fabrics betweentwo pieces of clean kitchen paper. Lay a piece of cloth on top of the paper and

press with a warm iron. The wax will melt and should be absorbed bythe paper. Then wash the fabric as you usually do

• If the candle is a bit too large, dip the bottom of the candle in warmwater for a few seconds. When the wax has softened, quickly press

the candle into the candlestick.• When the candle is too small, try using some aluminium foil.

Wrap a layer or two around the base of the candlebefore placing it in the candlestick.

Can Feng Shui change your life?Author and teacher Agneta Nyholm thinks so.

Let this Swede shares her secrets...

LIVING ROOM● Enhance your feeling of security in a relationship by

placing your sofa in a position of power with the back against a solid wall.

● Hang crystals in windows of sunny rooms, giving your home some colour therapy by bouncing a prism of light.

KITCHEN● Place things in pairs in the heart of your home. Try

matching salt and pepper shakers or two red plants.● The burners on your cooker must work smoothly and be

kept clean. The Chinese believe the cooker has a direct link to wealth.

BEDROOM● If you don’t sleep well, remove or cover large mirrors in

the bedroom.● It’s better for your relationship if your bed doesn’t face

the door. Place it where it has the best view of the whole room when you’re in bed.

● Clear out the clutter from under the bed – it could lead to disagreements with your partner.

BATHROOM● Before you flush the toilet put the lid down and keep

it down when it’s not in use. This ensures good health and also keeps your wealth from flushing away.

ROOM BY ROOMTry these fun Feng Shui ‘cures’ to increase the flow of energy in your home.

NATURE’S LITTLE HELPERSNeed a fresh approach to styling your home? Houseplants can have as much impact on space.

Tips for tending to your houseplants.

1 Keep any plants with variegated leaves (those with two colours) away from direct sunlight as

this dries the plant, shortening its lifespan.

2 Flowering and light green-leafed plants need lots of light and water. These are great for

windowsills, but be sure to check that leaves are not burning in the hot sun.

3 Don’t over-water plants - it rots their roots and kills them. If you plan to be away from home for

an extended period of time, purchase helpful self-watering plant pots like IKEA PS FEJÖ.

Furnishing with plantsSPACE CREATORS Build a room within a room by erecting a ‘wall’ of house trees. Use straight-trunked varieties with thick leaves to create moveable private areas. TRY Rubber plants (FICUS BENJ NATASJA).

SOUND ABSORBERS Leafy plants absorb sound and heat. Place in front of a window facing a noisy road to reduce disturbance, and around the home to moderate temperature. TRY Palms (LIVISTONA ROTUNDIFOLIA).

ENERGISERS Their ability to recycle oxygen means flowering plants can reinvigorate an environment. Colour experts say spiky bright green plants will give an extra boost. TRY Orchids (PHALAENNOPSIS), Aloe Vera.

LOVE ENHANCERS Forget bedroom gymnastics, Feng Shui recommends that simply placing a pink flower in your bedroom will encourage romance! So keep a fresh bloom in a vase. TRY Pink Gerberas (GERBERA JAMESONII).

Stackable storage such as bins and boxes save space. There are usually many different sizes, colours and materials to choose from. Transparent boxes are practical for seeing what is inside. Otherwise, labels, symbols and pictures may be useful. SORTERA box with lid RM69/each W39xD55, H45cm. White.

Plan the storage for children at child height so that they can find and take things out on their own as well as (learn how to) put them back.

Use the entire corner in your base cabinet. A swing-out fitting helps you make maximum use of your corner cabinet. The shelves are height adjustable and fit everything from pots and pans to small cans. They also rotate, making it easy for you to put things in – and reach to take them out again.

Store your food in food savers, which are suitable for thawing and warming food in the microwave. This will saves space in

the fridge and freezer. When you warm food in a food saver, don’t forget to take off the lid, or open the vent, if there is one. The leak-proof lid protects the contents from being damaged

by frost at the same time as it prevents leaks and spills. Make the most of available space by using wall shelves. Make sure it is possible to reach the top shelf with a step stool or ladder nearby. UDDEN wall shelf RM159/each W126xD34, H40cm. Silver-colour/white.

Kitchen trolley gives you extra storage, utility and workspace. Trolley with castors makes it easy to move about when needed, and it’s easier to clean underneath. UDDEN kitchen trolley RM229 L54xW54, H83cm. Silver-colour/stainless steel.

Narrow and often unused spaces can be practical for storing a ladder or for hanging apron and kitchen towels on hooks.7

Throw out what out you haven’t used for more than a year. You do not need 2 can openers, 3 ladles and 4 peelers. As a rule of thumb, keep one appliance or utensil and give the rest away to charity.

When everything has a place, kitchen work is easier and more fun. Plan where you want to store food, cook, eat and wash up. The utensils you need should be where you use them most. IKEA can help create a kitchen that’s easy to work in, functional and well organised. You can make maximum use of every space, and with a little planning, you can even have everything close at hand. With everything within reach and easy to fine, you save lots of time. And working in the kitchen will be much more fun too.

There is plenty of room under thesink for waste bin. Practical, sincethat’s where you rinse dishes, peelfruits and toss rubbish. If you putthem in a pullout tray or a fully extending drawer, waste sorting will be easy.

Organise the inside of your wall cabinet with storage solutions in the RATIONELL VARIERA series. It helps you organise everything, big and small.

High cabinets with fully extending drawers mean that you never need to stretch too far, get a good overview, can reach the content from two directions, and have flour, sugar, etc…close to your worktop when you are baking or preparing food.

Shelves and brackets can be placed almost anywhere. The material, depth and length are varied according to what is being stored. Heavy objects require stronger shelves with less space between the brackets. Height adjustable shelves enable maximum use of space.

610

Safety tips• Avoid placing a drawer unit next to a cooking unit. Children may use the drawer as a

ladder, reaching the potentially hot cooking unit, which may cause burns.• Keep electrical appliances and cables out of reach of children in the kitchen.

Appliances can be neatly tucked away in roll-front cabinets and still be easy to reach when needed.

• Keep knives, sharp objects, detergents or chemicals out of reach of children either by storing them at a height the child cannot reach or in a lockable cabinet.

• Ensure cords, strings or cables are stored away properly by using cable management.• Attach cabinets or other tall or heavy storage furniture that can easily fall to a wall.

11

Everything you could possibly need to set the table is the spacious fully

extending drawer. It has room for cutlery trays, plate holders, napkins

and salad bowls. If you place the drawers in a base cabinet near your dining table, setting the table will be

both faster and easier.

Washing up and preparing food requires worktop space. Create a place for everything within easy reach. Attach spice rack and kitchen roll holder to a rail, store knives on a magnetic rack and hang your cutlery holder. You can even hang up your kitchen towel. GRUNDTAL offers many more possibilities, from RM19 to RM89.

Fortunately, dad and mum arrived at a compromise. Dad got the food prepared the way he liked and mum got her electrical lights - for safety reasons, as she so thoughtfully pointed out. One tradition that never changed was dad bringing home the Christmas tree on morning of the eve. We would all decorate it together. And each year we will say, “This is the most beautiful Christmas tree ever” and each year it was true.

For me, Christmas preparation starts on the 1st of Advent, which is the first Sunday in December. Advent is a preparation time; traditionally every Sunday in December, 7 candles would be lit in the church’s Christmas tree. This then became the fully lit Christmas tree with 28 candles on 25th December.

Today, we light Advent candles in the window; for every Advent Sunday we light one. In our Christmas tree, the electrical candles have long replaced the real ones.

In December we decorate the home, prepare food and pastries for Christmas dinners and also Christmas gifts - the latter a tradition that can be traced back to the three wise man bearing gifts for baby Jesus. As recounted in the Bible’s book of Matthew, “On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.”

swedexmas

Every year, our family would celebrate Christmas the same way. Traditions were handed down for generations on how to decorate, what food to prepare, and when to bring in the Christmas tree. Like many other families, we were caught between two sets of traditions - from my dad’s side of the family and my mum’s. Frankly, the traditions were really not that different, except for Christmas recipe variations, and whether it should be turkey or ham on the dinner table. There were also endless discussions on live candles versus electrical ones in our Christmas tree.

12

There’s nothing more fun than planning and writing gift lists for yourself and your loved ones. We might not have time for self-made gifts and decorations anymore but hand-made gift cards, usually with a hand-written note, is a must in my family.

“”

Harriet Holmberg, IKEA Malaysia Communication and Interior Design Manager

Harriet’s horse named ULJAS (ooh lias). He is 21 years old in this picture. Taken 2 days before Christmas in 1993, South Finland where Harriet live back then. Behind is the barnyard.

For many families, actual Christmas celebration starts with “Julotta” mass at church, usually held between 7am and 8am, but some congregations have mass as early as 4am. This is a perfect way to gather with the family for a quiet moment and reminisce about absent family members and friends. Scandinavians decorate with lights and candles. However, we do it in a very settled way. Simple row of candles on the table, one lit decoration in each window, and in the garden we usually have a real Christmas tree ablaze with lights.

For a traditional look we choose straw or wooden decorations in red, green and gold, which are usually passed down for generations. More modern decorations would be in silver, blue and frosty ice designs.

Christmas flowers for me are definitely the Amaryllis and Hyacinth which give the whole house the look and smell of the season. But they are not to be placed on the Christmas dinner table where the food, branches from the Christmas tree and candles do the trick. The smell of Hyacinth would only interfere with the glorious aromas of the festive meal.

A Christmas decoration we always make together as a family is the gingerbread house. The bigger the better and a homemade one is the best. Busy mums however can buy a half ready ginger bread house at IKEA. It comes flat packed and is glued together with sugar syrup.

No living room is complete without a decorated Christmas tree. Space permitting, you should place the tree freestanding from the wall. Did you know that the Christmas tree is a German tradition that started as early as 700 A.D. In the 1800s the tradition was widespread in Germany, then moved to England and soon caught on all over the world.

13

Build your own gingerbread house! PEPPARKAKSHUS gingerbread house RM11.50 300g. Available at IKEA Swedish Specialty Shop, Ground Floor.

It’s fun to decorate the tree with a theme in mind. Use only gold decorations and angels or only candles, candies and strings of flags. Popcorn on a string is still one my son’s favourite decorations. It is easy to do and really fun to eat.

Christmas is also the time when we change the fabrics in the living room. A new white tablecloth and a red runner for the table, dark red and forest green pillows for the sofa, wooly rugs for the floor to sit on and new thicker curtains for the windows (to keep out the cold since the temperature during December can easily drop to - 20ºC in Scandinavia).

No home goes without the straw goat. He usually stands under the Christmas tree waiting for Santa to bring the presents.

Scandinavians burn a lot of candles and during Christmas we double the amount. Candles give a beautiful, cozy light to the room. Be careful that children don’t play with them. Also avoid placing candles or tea lights too close to each other.

For more than 100 years, the Nordic countries have celebrated the 20th day after Christmas, or “Knut’s day”. On this day the children are allowed to take down the small gifts and eat all the candy decorations in the tree. This is the Christmas season’s last party, with dancing around the now worn-out Christmas tree, before it is carried away.

For the kids, one of the most popular Christmas traditions is watching Donald Duck’s Christmas on TV. In Sweden, it has been airing on Christmas eve since 1959. The original version on American TV on 25 December 1951 was called the Walt Disney Christmas Show.

Briefly on Harriet Holmberg She has been working with IKEA for over 12 years, always in communication and interior design. She is currently Communication and Interior Design Manager with IKEA Malaysia.

Prior to this, she was 7 years in IKEA Finland and was the project leader for the IKEA second store in Helsinki and Haarlem/Netherlands. Harriet studied in fashion and marketing. Before attaching to IKEA, Harriet worked 6 years as interior designer and store planner for a leading furniture company (ISKU) in Finland.

16

The Swedish chef Let me introduce myself. My name is Kristoffer Luczak, Director of Kitchens at Crown Macau. I spent more than half of my life cooking. At the age of 19, I left my hometown, Stockholm in Sweden, and since then, I have been working in kitchens all over the world.

Christmas is here again, and it’s time to gather with your family and enjoy some great food – not forgetting Glögg, which is part of the Swedish Christmas

tradition since late 1800. Glögg is referred to as mulled wine. History reads that spoiled wine was used with spice and honey, to make it drinkable – this is traced back to the Greeks. Glögg comes in different forms in different parts of Europe - in the Nordic countries the recipes and practices are very similar. Its called “Glühwein” in German and “Vin Chaud” in French.

The aroma of Glögg makes you know it’s the festive season. The smell of spices in the house or in restaurants during the brew, has the same effect on me when I smell the first greenery and blossom after a long cold winter.

How to make traditional GlöggIngredients• 2 bottles red wine - not too expensive, a good table wine• 1 whole cinnamon stick• 10 whole cardamoms • 5pcs star anise • 5pcs whole cloves • 1pc ginger (fresh/whole/peeled), approx 50g• Dried orange peel • 400g sugar• Peeled whole almonds and raisins• Your favourite vodka and cognac (optional)

Infuse the wine for 2-3 hours, approx at 70-78°C in a pot on the stove. Let the spices sink into the brew. Leave them in the wine when cooling the brew down. Strain it and then store it in the fridge.

Reheat before serving - at only approx 70-78°C. It should be spiked with a splash of vodka and a shot of cognac. You can also have a censored version without alcohol. Serve it hot. Garnish with some raisins and peeled almonds, and enjoy!

If you would like a non-alcoholic version, just boil quickly over 100°C when making the infusion, the alcohol will evaporate.

If you’re running out of time to make the Glögg, simply buy a bottle and serve it warm in a traditional way or serve it chilled, with some citrus soda on the rocks. GLÖGG mulled wine, non-alcoholic RM13.90/each 750ml.

Serve Glögg with condiments such as Swedish gingersnaps (Pepparkakor) or Saffron buns (Lussekatter). PEPPARKAKSBURK gingersnaps in red tin RM14.50 500g.

If traditional roast turkey has become a norm, dig into a spread inspired by traditional Swedish “smörgåsboard”! Christmas dinner includes meatballs, many forms of salmon, boiled potatoes, herring, sausages, ham, bread and cheese. End it with a simple meringue dessert.

Lots of beer and schnapps usually top up this hearty meal, one celebrated with family and friends.

Cutting apples are made easy with this product.Your apple will be cut to equal sized segments too. CHARM apple slicer RM9.90 Ø10.5cm. Red.

Meringue dessertIngredients• 7oz meringue, bought or homemade• 10oz whipping cream• 10.5oz raspberries• 18oz vanilla ice cream• 3.5oz white chocolate

If you’re using frozen raspberries, defrost them first. Then whisk the whipping cream in a bowl until it’s light and fluffy. By using a silicon-coated whisk, you won’t scratch the bowl.

If your meringues are quite large, you might want to break them into smaller pieces. Layer the ingredients onto serving dishes, ice cream first, then the meringue, followed by the whipped cream, and then spoon over the raspberries.

For the final touch, grate up the white chocolate, sprinkle it over the top, and serve.
