Barb (Boso) Bragiel Hiram Graduation Year: 1991 Home Town: Ravenna, Ohio Current Home Town: Silver Lake, Ohio

Spouse/Children’s Names: Husband: John Bragiel Major(s) at Hiram: Communication Minor(s) at Hiram: Writing / Philosophy Past Careers:

In the not so distant past, I worked for more than 10 years as an account executive at Malone Advertising in Akron, where I served as a liaison between our clients and creative staff. Since leaving corporate America in 2013, I have taken on a variety of new roles. As I have been trying to launch a freelance writing career, I have had to find steadier work in order to support this passion. Primarily, I have been working closely with my parents to learn their rental property business. Another hat I wear is that of personal assistant to senior citizens in retirement communities; I help them with paying bills, balancing their checkbooks, shopping, etc. Lastly, I work part-time as a hotline outreach assistant for a local behavioral health organization, providing support to callers who are in crisis or considering suicide. While I'm busy enough with these responsibilities to stay out of trouble and off the streets, I still have time to focus on developing my fledgling writing career!

As a Communication major, the majority of my classes were with Dr. Linda Pierce Rea. During my four years at Hiram, we developed a close bond. She was easy to talk to and always kind and helpful.

The time I spent in Cambridge, England, is without a doubt my favorite Hiram experience. Favorite Hiram Professor:

I absolutely loved Professor Sawyer. His mythology class was at 8am and I had him during a particularly brutal winter season...although is there a winter at Hiram that isn't brutal? Anyway, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I would get up, brave the weather to get a cup of raspberry tea at the dining hall, and happily go listen to Professor Sawyer tell the absolute best stories and make mythology come alive. He was a fantastic professor and I will never forget those days.

Hobbies/Interest:

I thoroughly enjoy travelling and my life pretty much consists of saving for and planning out the next adventure. I am an avid reader and I like to run (although I'm not very fast), and I love to cook and eat (hence, the running).

For me, it begins and ends with John Koritansky. I took so many of his courses, I like to joke that I double-majored in political philosophy. He showed trust in me, helped me at my lowest points, and taught me an appreciation for philosophy and "the milk of human kindness" that are often lacking in the teaching of Economics. Now retired, he had a very firm grasp of the subject matter and really how to teach. Very rare and wonderful gift.

I retired in 2000 as Madison, New Jersey High School English Dept. chair, after teaching in Ohio, Indiana and here in Georgia, where I currently volunteer to lead public and private school 4-H classes in horticultural science as a Georgia Master Gardener. At MHS, I initiated Grades 9-11 Gifted Honors program and led the department in diversity and gender focus in our upgrading of the literary canon in the 70's and 80's. I taught British Literature, Humanities and Creative Writing, in addition to sophomore Honors English. I taught journalism and was advisor of both newspaper and literary magazine--both publications received national awards in scholastic journalism. In my district, I led after-school faculty training sessions in the application of Bloom's Taxonomy and Hunter Instructional Method to classroom planning and management.

Activities at Hiram:

I was on the editorial board of PATTERNS magazine, which (unfortunately) replaced the yearbook in 1958. I was a member of Sigma Mu Sigma Greek club, and of the college choir, and was a member of the 1957 Showboat Majestic crew. My junior year, I was the hostess of Bonney Castle Inn, was one of 12 senior women selected to reside in Bonney in the initial Honor Dorm, and am so pleased to see that Bonney is now English House. I went to Hiram intending to be a choral music director, but Mary Louise Vincent got her hooks into me one day, and the rest is history.

Favorite Hiram Memory:

The closeness I had with my profs, especially Vincent, Shaw and Schrader. I was in their homes frequently during my four years on the Hill. The Showboat ranks as a favorite also--the most consistent attendees at Hiram '60 class reunions are those who bonded on the Boat and in sports.
