Memphis has seven outfield assists through 23 games. Of the seven outfield assists, two have been at the plate to end an inning. Two of the remaining outfield assists happened at first base, one a double play and three other assists retired a runner at sec-ond base. Jake Little and Colton Simbeck each have has two of the seven assists while three other players have one each.

QUARTET OF LEFTIES

Memphis has started a left-handed pitcher in all 23 games this season. Looking at every Division I baseball squad, the Tigers are the only team to have lefties start every game this season. California started southpaws in their first 10 games. Kentucky started lefties in their first six games, but a right-handed pitcher started in each teams next contest. Only 12 other teams started three lefties to start the season, but in their fourth game, a right-hander took the hill.

DOUBLE DOUBLE

Memphis had nine doubles in Tuesday’s win at UT Martin, one double shy of the single-game record set in 2001 against UT Martin.

STOLEN BASE NUMBERS

The Tigers lead Conference USA with 38 stolen bases on the season, three better than second-place Houston. The 38 steals are the most for the Tigers among stats available that date back to 2008. Among the 38 steals, nine different players have swiped two or more steals. Ethan Gross leads the club with seven steals while Jake Little has six stolen bases.

ONE HIT AWAY

In nine of Memphis’ 10 losses this season, the ty-ing run has been on base, at the plate or on deck in the final at-bat. In the season opening loss to Illinois State, the tying run was on deck, but in the other six occasions, the tying run stood on the diamond. In the 10 inning losses to Arkansas State and Kent State, the tying run was on third and at the plate, respectively. Memphis had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded in two of the eight losses. The Tigers had the tying run at the plate against Alabama with one out in the ninth, but couldn’t make a comeback. The U of M had the tying run on first in the league opener at Tulane and in the series finale, the tying run stood on second base.

THE RUN AROUND

Memphis pitching has posted a 2.90 ERA so far al-lowing a total of 84 runs, 64 earned, in 23 outings. Going back to 1978, there have been just two other occasions in which the pitching staff held the opposi-tion to 84 or fewer runs over the first 23 games. Prior to this season, the last time the Tigers allowed fewer than 84 runs was in 1983, allowing 78 runs. The table below shows the years that Memphis has limited op-ponents to 84 or fewer runs in first 23 games and the win/loss record in those games.

Shortstop Ethan Gross has made 113 consecutive starts dating back to the second game of a double-header at East Carolina on March 26, 2011. If Gross starts each scheduled game this season he would tie the record for consecutive games started, which is held by Mike Dlugach (149).

GAME OVER

Jonathan Van Eaton recorded his 12th career save on March 2 against ULM, his fourth of 2013. With three more saves, he would pass Matt Yokley for the school record. Van Eaton posted eight saves in 2012, one shy of the single-season record set by Yokley in 2007.

SWINGING WITH AN AXE

Memphis is one of two teams at the NCAA Divi-sion I level to use “Axe Bats”. Axe is an entirely new concept for bats, built on the fact that the old, round knob does not help the hitter. The patented Axe handle puts the bat in your fingertips for a consistent swing plane and a freer release.

FREEBIE STATS

Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. The categories of the freebie award are listed below with record in those games.
