A state of confusion •  In 1812, Humphry Davy had speculated that there

would be very few actual elements, maybe one or two. By 1844, however, the number had reached 48.

•  There were a number of different systems for denoting the elements (Dalton’s circles, Berzelius’ letters, the old alchemical symbols, etc).

•  Because of the interdependence of atomic weight and chemical formula there was disagreement on some of the fundamental compounds and weights.

The Karlsruhe conference •  In 1860, Kekulé convened an international conference in

Karlsruhe (near Stuttgart) in order to try to address some of these issues and arrive at a disciplinary consensus.

•  Around 140 chemists attended, including almost all of the world’s prominent chemists.

•  A relatively unknown chemist, Stanislao Cannizzaro (1829-1910) presented a paper which he had published in an obscure journal two years earlier.

Cannizzaro’s proposal •  Cannizzaro was an atomist who believed in the

identity of the chemical and physical atom. [New dynamic theories of heat.]

•  His paper laid out clearly how the differences between Gay-Lussac and Dalton could be resolved using Avagadro’s hypothesis. He, then, explained the historical and theoretical reasons why this was not accepted at the time. He situated his work in the context of the work of the important chemists of the early 19th century and showed how it reconciled all of their ideas.

•  He handed out off-prints of his paper at the lecture.

Atoms and volumes •  Using the new system, Cannizzaro could make

claims about what was happening at the atomic level: –  2 CO + 1 O2 = 2 CO2 (carbon dioxide) –  2 N2 + 1 O2 = 2 N2O (nitrous oxide, laughing gas) –  1 NO (nitric ox.) + 1 O2 = 1 NO3 (nitric peroxide) –  3 H2 + 1 N2 = 2 H3N (ammonia)

•  This allowed a standardization of the chemical formulas, which lead to single system of atomic weights.

•  These formulas and newly calculated weights were listed in his paper.

A new reception •  Many chemists were convinced of the utility of the

new system on the spot, others were convinced when they read the paper in their own time.

•  Meyer said, I “received a copy which I put in my pocket and read on the train ride home … The scales seemed to fall from my eyes. Doubts disappeared and a feeling of quite certainty took their place.”

•  The new system was adopted into textbooks very quickly.

•  Nevertheless, many chemists still rejected the idea of the physical atom.

Dmitry Mendeleyev (1834-1907) •  Mendeleyev grew up in Siberia. His father was a

gymnasium (High School) teacher and after he died of tuberculosis, his mother supported the family by managing a glass works factory. (He was the 17th child.)

•  Educated at Main Teachers’ Training College and University of St. Petersburg, where he spent his professional life.

•  His liberal political views caused him some hassle early on, nevertheless, he became one of Russia’s most prominent scientists.

Mendeleyev’s work •  He was a prolific researcher and writer in all areas

of 19th century chemistry and industry. •  Interested both in making chemistry a theoretical

science and in finding new practical applications of chemistry for industrial use to improve the Russian economy.

•  He wrote a number of books and reports on the utilization of Russia’s vast natural resources.

•  Most remembered as the discoverer of the periodic law of the chemical elements.

Discovering the Law •  In the 1860s he was working on a new

textbook and was interested to derive a pattern among the known elements relating their basic properties.

•  Elements were differentiated on the basis of weight and their tendency to combine in certain ways with other elements (affinity, valence).

•  They formed natural groups based on their chemical properties.

Chemical groups •  At this time a number of different groups

were recognized. •  Alkali metals: lithium, sodium, potassium,

rubidium, cesium. They react violently with water and oxygen. Similar affinities.

•  Halogens: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine. Nonmetallic, react violently, they form (non-O) acids with H.

•  Others: Alkaline earths, a sulfur group, a phosphorus group, etc.

Mendeleyev’s procedure •  He wrote down each element on a little card

along with its atomic weight, its chemical properties and its most common compounds.

•  He then grouped certain elements together based on their natural properties.

•  By moving the cards around, he could study the underlying patterns that began to immerge. He described what he did as playing Patience, a contemporary game of solitaire.

Properties and weight •  He noticed that in each group which shared

chemical properties there was a clear ascending pattern in the values of their atomic weights.

•  He placed the group of the halogens next to the alkali metals and saw that each element of the halogens weighed about the same amount less than the corresponding element in the alkali metals.

•  He filled out this pattern as much as possible.

Explanatory value

•  He realized that the chemical properties were somehow directly related to weight and that there was some pattern of repetition.

•  This lead to the belief that chemical properties must be based on some fundamental, physical properties.

Publication •  Mendeleyev announced the law in 1869 to the

Russian Physical Chemical Society. Mayer published a German version in the early 70s.

•  The first table had a number of blank slots and called into question a number of established atomic weights.

•  In placing an element into the table, he placed it with its proper natural group rather than on the basis of its established relative weight. This lead to some corrections in established weights. (But in one case he was wrong, due to isotopic effects.)

Announcement remarks I “1. The elements, if arranged according to their

atomic weights, exhibit a periodicity of properties. 2. Chemically analogous elements have either similar

atomic weights (Pt [platinum], Ir [iridium], Os [osmium]), or weights which increase by equal increments (K [potassium], Rb [rubidium], Cs [caesium]).

3. The arrangement according to atomic weight corresponds to the valence of the element and to a certain extent the difference in chemical behavior, for example Li [lithium], Be [beryllium], B [boron], C [carbon], N, O, F [florine].

the properties of the element. Therefore, in the study of compounds, not only the quantities and properties of the elements and their reciprocal behavior is to be taken into consideration, but also the atomic weight of the elements…

6. One can predict the discovery of many new elements, for example analogues of Si [silicon] and Al [aluminum] with atomic weights of 65-75. [exa-silicon, exa-aluminum.]

Announcement remarks III 7. A few atomic weights will probably require

correction; for example Te [tellerium] cannot have the atomic weight 128, but rather 123-126. [He was wrong.]

8. From the above table, some new analogies between elements are revealed. Thus Ur [now, indium] appears as an analogue of Bo [boron] and Al [aluminum], as is well known to have been long established experimentally.

The Periodic Law •  He realized that the chemical properties are a function

of weight and that the certain sets of properties are repeated at regular intervals.

•  M: “In proportion to the increase in atomic weight elements at first acquire entirely new, changing properties, then these properties recur in a new period, in a new line and row of elements and in the same sequence as in the preceding row. Thus the law of periodicity may be expressed as follows: the properties of the elements, and thus the properties of simple or compound bodies of these elements, are dependent in a periodic way on the magnitude of the atomic weights of the elements.”

New predictions •  On the basis of empty places in the table, Mendeleyev

went on to predict the discovery of new elements. He stated their atomic weight and described their basic properties.

•  Eka-Aluminum: “In all relations ought to show the transition from the properties of aluminum to those of indium. [It] … will be more volatile than aluminum…It may be hoped that it may be discovered by spectral analysis.”

•  Eka-Boron: The weight “must be approximately 44… Its oxide must have the formula Eb2O3 and will be basic but not very active.”

•  He turned these predictions over to the experimenters confident of the results.

A theoretical science •  M: “The whole essence of theoretical knowledge

in chemistry lies in the abstract conception of the elements. To find their fundamental properties, to determine the reasons for their differences and similarities, and then on the basis of this knowledge to forecast the properties of new bodies formed by the elements - that is the path along which our science advances firmly … and there still remains much to be done. The main interest in chemistry is in the study of the principle qualities of the elements.”

The spectrum again •  Around the turn of the 19th century, people had

begun to notice that if sunlight were passed through a very narrow slit before being refracted, there were dark lines in its spectrum.

•  These lines were studied by Fraunhofer, a lens maker, in 1817. He studied the light from stars, candles and other substances and concluded that the lines were characteristic of the physical material of light source and of the substances through which the light passed.

Spectral Analysis •  In the 1850s, Bunsen and Kerchoff began to

use these lines to analyze the chemical composition of elements and compounds by burning them.

•  They found that when a chemical is heated to incandescence, it gives off a characteristic colored light.

•  When this light is passed through a prism it produces a distinct spectral pattern.

The Physics of the Spectrum •  Kirchoff argued that each element, when

heated, emits light only at certain specific, and characteristic wavelengths.

•  When light, at these wavelengths, is passed through a vapor of the same substance, it is then absorbed (not transmitted).

•  Elements absorb the same light that they emit. •  These patterns could then be taken as individual

identifying characteristics.

The Use of the Spectrograph •  Throughout the 1850-70s, chemists used the

spectrograph both to analyze compounds and to discover a number of new elements.

•  Many of these newly discovered elements were useful to Mendeleyev in discovering the periodic law.

•  By the time Mendeleyev was working on the table, it was an established part of chemical practice.

Back to Mendeleyev’s Predictions •  In 1875, Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered a

new element in zinc ore from the Pyrenees. He reported that it had exactly the properties predicted by Mendeleyev for eka-Aluminum. He called it Gallium.

•  Within two years, eka-silicon (Germanium) and eka-boron had been isolated as well (Scandium).

•  The successful outcome of these precise predictions made it clear that Mendeleyev’s table organized the elements in some fundamental way even though the atomic structure of the elements was still unknown.

Prediction and falsifiability •  Mendeleyev’s theory made very specific

prediction about the existence of new things.

•  His theory also made claims that some measurements had been made incorrectly.

•  How are these related? •  What would have happened if these

elements had not been found? •  Does the fact that the predicted elements

were found prove that the theory is correct?
