RMU will close out the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. tip @ Pittsburgh Sunday, Nov. 27. The Colonials own a record of 1-1 through two games of the tourney thanks to an 82-77 victory in their last contest @ James Madison (11/22/11). Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led Robert Mor- ris against the Dukes with a career-high 38 points, converting on 10 of his 15 shots from the floor, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and a 15-for-19 showing at the free-throw line. Jones tied the fourth highest single-game scoring total in school history and produced the most points since former Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) dropped 39 in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Jones also became the 21st different student-athlete in school his- tory to eclipse the 30-point plateau in a game at Robert Morris. Quick Stat of the Night - For Robert Morris to be successful, an ability to crash the glass is one reason why the Colonials could produce victories on a regular basis. Through four games of the 2011-12 season, RMU has done exactly that, outrebounding three of its first four opponents and averaging 34.8 caroms per contest. Robert Morris is coming off an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11) in which it finished with a margin of +10 in rebounding, finishing with 37 boards com- pared to 27 for the Dukes. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson paced RMU with a season- high nine rebounds. Through their first four games of the season, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +4.7, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference and trails only Quinnipiac. Friday’s Opponent and The All-Time Series - Robert Morris has never squared off against La Salle on the hardwood in its 36-year Division I history, as Friday’s game marks the inaugural meeting between the two programs. The Explor- ers are one of four teams that RMU will face for the first time in school history in 2011-12, joining fellow Philly Hoop Group Classic participant Penn (11/22/11), which defeated the Colonials, 66-60, in the inaugural meeting, Louisiana- Lafayette (12/17/11) and Hampton (12/20/11). RMU’s tilts with the Ragin’ Cajuns and Pirates in December are the beginning of a home-and-home series that will be concluded in 2012-13. 2010-11 RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 21-15 (.583).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Mr. Jones - Notes on Velton Jones’ 38-point performance in an 83-77 victory @ JamesMadison (11/22/11) ... The 38 points is tied for the fourth highest single-game total inschool history with former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000), who finished with 38 in a72-52 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (3/3/00) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 NortheastConference Tournament ... Four of RMU’s top five scoring games in school history havecome away from the Charles L. Sewall Center ... Jones scored 20 points in the first halfagainst the Dukes, becoming the first Colonial to score at least 20 points in a half sinceformer Colonial A.J. Jones converted 15 freethrows against the Dukes, a career high and tied for the second highest single-gametotal in school history.

The Race Heats Up - Thanks to a career-high 38 points in an 82-77 victory @ James Madi-son (11/22/11), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has a chance to become the first stu-dent-athlete in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in 2011-12 since formerColonial guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 cam-paign. Jones enters Friday’s game against La Salle as the program’s active leading scorerwith 751 career points and would need to average 9.2 points over RMU’s final 27 regu-lar-season contests to become the 20th player in school history to reach the 1,000 careerpoints.

Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Friday’s game against La Salle withhaving reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 10 games dating back to lastseason, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging Jonesis averaging 18.3 points per contest.

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt junior enters Friday’s game against La Salle owning the longest ac-tive streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 71 straightgames for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 56 straight starts.Jones owns 66 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Red-shirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career startswith 31. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 71 consecutive games for RMU, thelongest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in48 consecutive games.

Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 71-11 (.865) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 68-9 (.883) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 16-5 (.762) when outrebounding its opponent.

A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t be off to a 3-1 start without the contri-butions its received on the glass from its 2011-12 freshman class. Through the first fourgames, RMU’s four active freshman have combined for 52 of the squad’s 139 rebounds(37.4%). Freshman guard/forward Lucky Jones owns a team-high 27 rebounds so far thisseason, an average of 6.8 per contest. In an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11) in the2011-12 season opener, Jones grabbed 13 rebounds. He fell two caroms shy of the RMUfreshman record for caroms in a game, as former Colonial Anthony Dickens (1985-90)grabbed 15 boards in a game twice during the 1985-86 season.

The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still topsin the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.14 three-pointers percontest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.01 three-pointers a game. In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirtfreshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth inthe NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teamsin three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ...
