The Colonials will look to continue the momentum they built from a 4-0 shutout of nation- ally ranked Quinnipiac that earned the team a series split on the weekend. The victory on Sunday afternoon was the first time in program history that the Colonials had shut out a nationally-ranked opponent. After a 33-save performance in a 4-0 loss on Saturday afternoon, senior goaltender Eric Levine recorded a 48-save shutout of the Bobcats on Sunday. The 81-save effort in the weekend series gives Levine a .953 save percentage to open the season and earned him the Atlantic Hockey / Travel Team USA Goaltender of the Week Award. The shutout was Levine’s second career shutout and the first for the Colonials since December 17, 2011 when they blanked RIT, 4-0. After scoring just three goals in his junior season, senior forward Zach Hervato quickly netted his first two goals of the season in Sunday’s victory over Quinnipiac. His second goal was of the short-handed variety and one of two short-handed tallies the Colonials would score in the contest. With nine freshmen on the roster for the 2012-2013 season, the Colonials are looking for early contributions from the class. Forward David Friedmann picked up his first collegiate goal while defenseman Evan Moore picked up his first-career point with an assist on Hervato’s short-handed marker. SCOUTING THE TIGERS The Tigers opened the season with a series against nationally-ranked Michigan. RIT would come away with a split of the series after winning the season’s first game in overtime thanks to a goal by Adam Hartley to cap a three-goal comeback. In the second game of the series, the Tigers fell 7-2 with Jeff Smith scoring both goals in the game. The Tigers hosted Penn State for their first home-game of the season at a sold-out Blue Cross Arena. RIT would drop a 3-2 contest to the Nittany Lions as Ben Lynch would contribute a goal and an assists in the losing effort. Leading the way for the Tigers early in the season is Smith who has five points in the three RIT contests. Lynch is right behind him with one goal an two assists on the season. In goal, Josh Watson has started two of the three games, including the victory over Michigan. He holds a record of 1-1-0 while recording a 3.53 goals-against-average and a .894 save percentage. facebook.com/rmuhockey rmucolonials.com twitter.com/rmuhockey ALL-TIME SERIES VS. RIT The Colonials will be looking for their first-ever win in Rochester as they open up Atlantic Hock- ey play with a single game against the Tigers. Last season, Robert Morris went undefeated against the Tigers in the three games they saw each other. The Colonials won the first game 4-0 on home ice before the two teams would tie both games in Rochester. Prior to Robert Mor- ris joining the Atlantic Hockey Association, the teams’ only meeting was during the 2005-06 season when RIT traveled to Pittsburgh. The Colonials would come away with a win and a tie against the Tigers in only the program’s second season of existence. YOUTH OF THE NATIONThis season, 16 of the RMU’s 27 players on the roster are either in their first or second season of NCAA hockey. The Colonials only have five seniors on the roster after graduating ten seniors a year ago.

KILLER PENALTY KILLRobert Morris continued their success from the previous season when it comes to killing penal-ties. The team had the nation’s best penalty kill in the 2011-12 season. The Colonials successful-ly killed off 143-of-159 penalties (89.9 percent) this season. RMU also tallied four short-handed goals during the season. To start the 2012-13 season, the Colonials killed all twelve power-play opportunities for the Bobcats while tallying two short-handed goals.

PLAYING WITH THE LEADNow in their third season in the AHA, the Colo-nials have held a record of 29-1-3 when leading after two periods of play. RMU has also com-piled a 19-4-2 record when leading after one period of play during their tenure in the AHA.

PENNSYLVANIA PROUDThis season, seven players on the Colonials roster hail from the state of Pennsylvania. Andrew Blazek, Ryan Gayso, Brendan Jamison, Zac Lynch, David Rigatti, Colin South, and John Walton all call the Keystone State home.

TEAM CANADA EAST MEMBERSRobert Morris’ roster has three skaters that have competed with Team Canada East. Zach Hervato (2008), Tyson Wilson (2010), and David Friedmann (2011) have all seen game action with the team during the World Junior A Chal-lenge.

KEEPING IT CLOSENine of Robert Morris’ seventeen wins in the 2011-12 season have been decided by a single goal. Thirteen of the team’s wins have been decided by two or fewer goals.

ON THE HORIZONAfter starting the season with three consecu-tive road contests, the Colonials will return home to the 84 Lumber Arena to host the defending AHA Champion Air Force Falcons on Saturday evening. The two teams have split their sixteen meetings since RMU’s first season of play. Since the two teams have been AHA foes, the Falcons have won four of the six matchups.

TURNING THE PAGERobert Morris finished the 2011-12 season with a 17-17-5 record overall while holding a 13-9-5 record in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The team won its first ever playoff series as a mem-ber of the AHA as they beat American Interna-tional in three games before falling to Niagara in the quarterfinals.

STARTING IT OFFIncluding the season-opening loss to Quinni-piac, the Colonials are 4-5-0 in the first game of the season. In home-openers, RMU holds a mark of 5-3-0 heading into the upcoming game against Air Force.

HOME SWEET HOMEIn the two seasons that Robert Morris has been a member of the Atlantic Hockey Association, the team has enjoyed success playing at the Island Sports Center. The Colonials have put together a record of 20-8-5 while skating on home ice.

NON-CONFERENCE WOESSince joining Atlantic Hockey in the 2010-2011 season, the Colonials have gone 10-12-0 in non-conference contests. In their nine years of existence, the program is 36-65-9 in non-con-ference competition.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINSenior defenseman Brendan Jamison serves as captain with fellow defenseman Tyler Hinds skating as the assistant captain this season. Jamison will be the first Pittsburgh native to serve as the team’s captain in the program’s nine-year history.

OFFENSIVE SURGEGoals don’t come easy in the Atlantic Hockey Association, but when the Colonials do score, chances are the result is going to be a win. The Colonials are 25-2-2 when scoring four or more goals in a game while competing in the AHA.

THE CENTURY MARKThree Colonials are within ten games of reach-ing of the 100 games played milestone. Seniors Adam Brace and Brendan Jamison will both reach the mark the next time they step on the ice. Fellow senior Zach Hervato sits at 94 games played after participating in both games of the series against Quinnipiac.

WYDO TIES ROOKIE MARKWith 13 goals in his rookie season, Cody Wydo tied Chris Margott’s RMU freshman record. Wydo finished the season with 20 points, two power-play goals, and four game-winning goals.

IN THE SPOTLIGHTThe Colonials will appear on National TV for the fourth time in program history when they travel to Army on January 4, 2013. FROZEN FOUR COMES TO PA The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Commit-tee has chosen the city of Pittsburgh as the site of the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four with Robert Mor-ris University serving as the host institution in conjunction with VisitPittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Penguins. CONSOL Energy Center will host the event on April 11-13, 2013 with the event marking first NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship event held in the state of Pennsylvania. It will be the first major team sport in NCAA history to conduct its national championship in the city of Pittsburgh.

MANN COMMITSOriginally committed to join the Colonials in the 2012-13 season, Rob Mann becomes the first member of the Class of 2017 for Robert Morris. As a 6-4, 205-pound defenseman, Mann is cur-rently skating with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL before making the trek to Pittsburgh for the 2013-14 season. In 14 games with the Vees, Mann has been a fixture in the defensive zone while picking up 4 penalty minutes. Prior to the BCHL, Mann played three seasons in the OJHL where he started his career with the Whitby Fury in the 2009-10 season when he made three appearances with the squad. He then spent the majority of the following two seasons with Whitby before being traded to the Markham Waxers during the 2011-12 season. During his time in the OJHL, Mann played in 88 games while netting 10 goals to go with 45 assists.

QUOTABLESHead Coach Derek SchooleyTHE WEEKEND SERIES WITH QUINNIPIAC...“It was really good for our young guys to get accustomed to the college hockey pace and play. On Sunday, it was a really solid performance by everyone with Hervato scoring two goals and Levine getting the shutout.”

THE SUCCESS OF THE PENALTY KILL...“Our returning defensemen have experience on the penalty kill so the key was to get forwards who haven’t killed penalties the ice time and experience in that type of situation.”

THE START OF ATLANTIC HOCKEY...“They are good hockey teams; RIT has always been a tough team to play against, especially in their building. Air Force has some skill and they

find ways to win games in every situation.”

Goaltender Eric LevineEARNING THE PROGRAM’S FIRST-EVER SHUT-OUT OVER A RANKED OPPONENT...“They had 48 shots, but most of them were first-chance opportunities. Our defense and forwards coming back were excellent in our end clearing pucks out and taking away and second opportunities.”

OPENING ATLANTIC HOCKEY ACTION...“We need to make sure that we are excuting our systems to remain consistent. Each team has a different style of play and they each present different challenges moving forward.”

Forward Zach HervatoOFFENSIVE EXPECTATIONS...“We are always going to need players to step up on a nightly basis in the offensive zone. For me, I just want to contribute by scoring some goals and also on the power-play and keep our good start going.”

STARTING THE AHA WITH RIT AND AIR FORCE...“They are rivals of us, they are very agressive and it is hard-hitting hockey. We will come out with fire and so will they, they will be some exciting games.”

Rochester, N.Y. – For the second night in a row, the Robert Morris men’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with RIT on Satur-day night at Ritter Arena.

Robert Morris (14-13-5 overall, 12-8-5 Atlantic Hockey) opened the night with an offensive explosion in the first period, taking a 2-0 lead after rallying for a 2-2 overtime tie the night before. Junior defenseman Brendan Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Jersey Hitmen) notched his first goal of the season 4:19 into the contest when he crashed the Tigers’ net and knocked in a rebound from the slot. Senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) put the initial shot on net and was credited with the assist – his first of two helpers on the night. Senior forward Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars), who made his 136th career appearance on Saturday to tie the all-time RMU record, also earned an assist on the goal.

Crichton, who ended the night with a team-best 25 points for the year, would also set up junior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius) on RMU’s first power-play opportunity of the night for the Colonials’ second goal at 13:51 of the period. Freshman forward Cody Cartier (Sylvan Lake, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) also earned an assist Brace’s ninth of the year. The goal snapped a four-game point drought for Brace. The Colonial power play would go 1-for-5 on the night while the top-ranked penalty kill blanked RIT on all five chances.

Senior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) backstopped another gem for the Colonials, making 40 saves – his second 40-plus save performance of the weekend – to move to 8-9-4 on the year. No save was bigger than the senior’s second-period snagging of a loose puck that bounced off the pipe and teetered inches off the goal line before Ostergard reached back and gloved the puck to safety. The Tigers (17-10-5, 14-6-5) would eventual best Ostergard with a goal from Trevor Eckenswiller at 11:19 of the second period before Ben Lynch found the equalizer exactly nine minutes into the third period. Shane Madolora would make 37 saves in net for the Tigers.

Both teams would up the tempo in the final 10 minutes of regula-tion, trading unsuccessful scoring opportunities, however for the second-straight night the game was destined for overtime. RIT, which ended the game with a 42-39 shot advantage, was hit with a penalty call in the added session but Robert Morris couldn’t convert the opportunity as the two teams had to split four league points for the weekend with the two ties. RMU outshot the Tigers 2-0 in overtime on Saturday.

Hamden, Conn. - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team took to the ice again against the nationally ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats to conclude a two-game series. Behind a stellar defen-sive effort, the Colonials came away with a 4-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

As the two teams traded chances in the first period, it was the Colonials who would strike first with less than three minutes remaining. Freshman forward David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) scored his first collegiate goal that was as-sisted by assistant captain Tyler Hinds (Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders). Less than a minute later RMU would double their advan-tage thanks to senior forward Zach Hervato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears). Hervato would be set up on his first goal of the season by his line mates Jeff Jones (Revelstoke, British Columbia / Merritt Centennials) and Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers).

While neither team would score in the second period, senior goaltender Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) remained busy stopping all fourteen Quinnipiac shots he saw in the frame.

Less than three minutes into the third period, Hervato would net his second goal of the game. While killing a Colonial penalty, Hervato would find the back of the net after a setup from freshman defenseman Evan Moore (Groose Point, Mich. / Sioux Falls Stam-pede) who picked up his first career point on the play. Fellow senior Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) would seal the game for the Colonials in the final minute while killing a sixth RMU penalty. The empty-net goal would be the second short-handed goal in the game for Robert Morris who again killed every penalty the team committed.

The strong special-teams play combined with a 48-save perfor-mance from Levine helped the Colonials to their first shutout since December 17, 2011 when they blanked RIT and the team’s first-ever shutout of a ranked opponent. Robert Morris blocked twelve shots in front of Levine and junior defenseman Evan Renwick (Calgary, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) sacrificed his body for three blocks. On the offensive end, the Colonials managed 25 shots on goal as Brace led the way with six of them.

HEaD coacH Derek SchooleyHead coach Derek Schooley believes that his team is ready to regularly compete with other top teams around the nation as his previous teams have shown. Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athlet-ics with some major upsets in the past few seasons. In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off then-No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. However Schooley’s signa-ture wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against then-No. 1 ranked Miami (OH).

Schooley, 42, has been a college hockey coach for 16 seasons. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris History. Since taking over the RMU program, Schooley has coached 36 players who have ascended from the program and signed a contract with a professional hockey team. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent four years at the Air Force Academy as an Assistant Coach before spending one season at Air Force as Associate Head Coach. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season.

He started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an as-sistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assis-tant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

The ninth year head coach enters the 2012-13 season with a record of 104-142-36 in eight seasons at Robert Morris. Schooley led the Colonials to 17 wins and a second-consecutive season with a winning percentage of at least .500 during the 2011-12 campaign. RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com. Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up.

During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA Student-Athlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-07 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime.

In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA in-cluded a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals. Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott).

In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials placed two play-ers, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tal-lied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship.
