After starting the season with three consecutive contests on the road, the Colonials dropped their first home game of the season to Air Force by a score of 4-1. The Colonials will look to bounce back after their first lost in Atlantic Hockey this season. Prior to the defeat, Rob- ert Morris had claimed their first-ever victory at RIT and knocked-off then #18 ranked Quinnipiac in the second game of the season. RMU is off to a 1-1-0 start in their third season in the Atlantic Hockey Association; in their first two years, the Colonials put up identical 13-9-5 marks. After scoring just three goals in his junior season, senior forward Zach Hervato picked up three goals in the first three games of his senior season. After scoring two goals in the victory over Quinnipiac, Hervato iced the game against the Tigers as he scored the sixth goal in the closing minute of the game. His linemates, Colin South and Jeff Jones, also contributed to the win in Rochester. South recorded two goals while adding an assist in the game. Jones would net the game-winning goal to go along with two helpers. With their performances in the first two AHA games of the weekend, both Hervato and Jones were named Travel Team USA/Atlantic Hockey Co-Players of the Week. After a perfect start to the season killing all twelve penalties in the Quinnipiac series, the Colonials allowed four power-play goals on seven opportunities in the two games against RIT and Air Force. SCOUTING THE FALCONS After alternating wins and losses in their first four games, the Falcons’ record is identical to the Co- lonials as both teams sit at 2-2-0. In their most recent game, the Falcons fell to Harvard by a score of 5-0 in the first-ever meeting betweein the two programs. That loss came after Bentley tied a program record with nine goals in a victory over Alabama-Huntsville, 9-1. The Falcons will be the second op- ponent to have faced the nationally ranked Michigan Wolverines. Bentley fell in their travels to Ann Arbor by a score of 6-3. In their season-opener, the Falcons would top Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart by a 7-1 score. In four games, junior forward Brett Gensler has eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) as three other Falcons have five points to support the Bentley offense. Junior goaltender Branden Komm has started all four games in net for the Falcons as he holds a 3.25 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. With the man-advantage, the Falcons have capitalized on four of their fifteen chances (26.7%) while Bentley has killed fifteen of their eighteen penalties (83.3%). facebook.com/rmuhockey rmucolonials.com twitter.com/rmuhockey ALL-TIME SERIES VS. BENTLEY The Colonials be looking to improve on a 3-3-2 record against the Falcons at the two teams meet for the only time this season. In the two years that RMU has been a member of the AHA, the Colonials have compiled a record of 2-1-1 against Bentley. The only other time the two teams had previously met was during RMU’s first two years of existence in 2004-05 and 2005-06. In those two years, the Colonials and Falcons split the four games played against each other. At the RMU Island Sports Center, the Colonials hold a record of 2-1-1 while outscoring the Falcons 14-8. KILLER PENALTY KILLRobert Morris continued their success from the previous season when it comes to killing penal-ties. The team had the nation’s best penalty kill in the 2011-12 season. The Colonials suc-cessfully killed off 143-of-159 penalties (89.9 percent) this season. RMU also tallied four short-handed goals during the season. To start the 2012-13 season, the Colonials killed fifteen of the nineteen power-play opportunities their opponents have had while tallying two short-handed goals for themselves.

PLAYING WITH THE LEADNow in their third season in the AHA, the Colo-nials have held a record of 30-1-3 when leading after two periods of play. RMU has also com-piled a 19-4-2 record when leading after one period of play during their tenure in the AHA.

PENNSYLVANIA PROUDThis season, seven players on the Colonials roster hail from the state of Pennsylvania. Andrew Blazek, Ryan Gayso, Brendan Jamison, Zac Lynch, David Rigatti, Colin South, and John Walton all call the Keystone State home.

TEAM CANADA EAST MEMBERSRobert Morris’ roster has three skaters that have competed with Team Canada East. Zach Hervato (2008), Tyson Wilson (2010), and David Friedmann (2011) have all seen game action with the team during the World Junior A Chal-lenge.

HEaD coacH Derek SchooleyHead coach Derek Schooley believes that his team is ready to regularly compete with other top teams around the nation as his previous teams have shown. Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athlet-ics with some major upsets in the past few seasons. In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off then-No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. However Schooley’s signa-ture wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against then-No. 1 ranked Miami (OH).

Schooley, 42, has been a college hockey coach for 16 seasons. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris History. Since taking over the RMU program, Schooley has coached 36 players who have ascended from the program and signed a contract with a professional hockey team. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent four years at the Air Force Academy as an Assistant Coach before spending one season at Air Force as Associate Head Coach. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season.

He started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an as-sistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assis-tant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

The ninth year head coach enters the 2012-13 season with a record of 104-142-36 in eight seasons at Robert Morris. Schooley led the Colonials to 17 wins and a second-consecutive season with a winning percentage of at least .500 during the 2011-12 campaign. RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com. Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase. The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up.

During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA Student-Athlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-07 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime.

In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA in-cluded a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals. Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott).

In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials placed two play-ers, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tal-lied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington (W. Va.) Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan and Taylor.

The Colonials’ defensive efforts under Workman really took stride in 2011-12 as the team’s penalty kill was ranked #1 in the na-tion by season’s end. Robert Morris’ penalty kill was able to killed off 89.8 percent of the penalties they took in the season.

While at Brown, Workman was responsible for practice development, video scouting, game strategies, conditioning programs and bench management while overseeing the team’s defensive corps. Workman served as the Assistant Coach at his alma mater, St. Scholastica, from 1993-1995, and was the Head Coach for St. Scholastica from 1995-2001, coaching five All-League Players in six years and 45 All-Academic players. Workman has also served as an NCAA representative at the 2000 and 2001 Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Quarterfinal Games, and on the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey West Region Ranking Commit-tee from 1998-2001.

Over the past few years, Workman has coached at the Minnesota Model Camp. During the summer of 2004, Workman was a Head Coach at the US Select 14 Festival. While in Duluth, Workman helped to write scouting reports on the opposition of Minnesota-Duluth during the 2001-2002 season.

Workman was a four-year varsity player at St. Scholastica, serving as the team’s Assistant Captain as a junior and as the Captain as a senior in 1993. He earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award in 1992 and the Coaches’ Award in 1993, while playing in 105 of 107 games, including 105 consecutive contests, on the blueline.

In 2010-11, Nicholson was part of a Robert Morris coaching staff that guided the Colonials to a program-best 18-12-5 record.

Nicholson joined the Robert Morris coaching staff after coaching two years at Division III Adrian College. A start up program in the 2007-08 season, Adrian College went on to win MCHA regular season and playoff championships during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons for a combined record of 53-4-1. While coaching at Adrian, Nicholson started his own charitable founda-tion, “The Matt Nicholson Foundation.” The organization is dedicated to serving programs that promote athletics as a positive outlet for local youth.

While at Colgate, the London, Ontario native played 123 games and recorded two career goals and 10 assists. After graduation, he participated in the Phoenix Coyote’s NHL Rookie camp and went on to sign with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League (CHL) for the 2004-05 season. In 2005-06, Nicholson joined the Youngstown Steelhounds of the CHL for his final professional season before his career was cut short due to injury.

Nicholson earned his bachelor’s degree in education at Colgate in 2004 and added a master’s degree in instructional leadership and decision making from Robert Morris in 2011. He has a Level 4 USA hockey certification and has spoken at numerous USA Hockey events.

On tap for the upcoming weekend are conference match-ups between Bentley-Robert Morris; Connect-icut-Niagara; Mercyhurst-Sacred Heart; RIT-American International and Holy Cross-Air Force. Canisius will play a pair non-conference contests against Clarkson. American International will also play out of conference versus Quinnipiac on Tuesday night. Mercyhurst will make the trek to the Nutmeg State and take on Sacred Heart. Friday’s game has been changed to the Northford Ice Pavilion due to the affects of Hurricane Sandy at the beginning of the week. Saturday’s contest will still take place at the Webster Bank Arena. The Lakers and the Pioneers are look-ing to put a notch in the win column for the first time this season. During the 2010-11 season both teams earned a win in Connecticut, as Mercyhurst took the first game, 6-2, while Sacred Heart won the finale 3-2. The Lakers had last weekend off, while the Pioneers dropped a 6-3 decision to Penn State at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Bentley will travel to Pittsburgh to take on Robert Morris in a two-game set at the 84 Lumber Arena. Both teams will look to improve on their 2-2-0 records so far this season. The last time these two teams played in Pittsburgh, the Colonials took the weekend series, 1-0-1. The Falcons split its two games last weekend, defeating Alabama-Huntsville, 9-1, while dropping a 5-0 decision to then 17th-ranked Harvard on Saturday night. Robert Morris also split their two-games last weekend, defeating RIT, 6-4 on Thursday night and being defeated by Air Force on Saturday, 4-1. Connecticut will travel to Western New York and face Niagara in a two-game series at Dwyer Arena. The Huskies are looking for their first win of the season, while the Purple Eagles are trying to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season. The last time these two teams faced-off at Dwyer Arena, both teams picked up wins, Connecticut, 8-5, and Niagara, 4-3. Connecticut went 0-1-1 last weekend, falling to Holy Cross 2-1 on Friday night, while earning a 2-2 tie against then 8th-ranked Union on Saturday. Niagara went unbeaten last weekend against Clarkson, defeating the Golden Knights, 2-0 on Friday and then earning a 4-4 tie on Saturday. RIT will travel east to Springfield to take on American International at the Olympia Ice Center. The Tigers and the Yellow Jackets are looking for their first points in Atlantic Hockey. During the 2010-11 season when these two teams last met at the Olympia Ice Center, RIT took the first game, 4-0, but American International rebounded for a 6-2 victory in the second contest. RIT dropped both of its match-ups last weekend, 6-4 to Robert Morris on Thursday and 6-3 to Colgate on Friday. AIC split both of its contests last weekend, falling 8-0 to then 8th-ranked Union Friday and then bouncing back for a 4-3 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday. Holy Cross will make the longest trek of the weekend, as the Crusaders travel to Colorado to face Air Force. Holy Cross sits in second place just one point ahead of the Falcons in the Atlantic Hockey standings. The last time the Crusaders traveled to the Cadet Ice Arena, Air Force went 1-0-1 in the weekend series back in December 2010. Holy Cross went 1-1-0 last weekend, defeating Connecticut 2-1 on Friday, before falling to Army, 7-2, on Saturday. Air Force posted a 1-0-1 record, with a 1-1 tie at Canisius on Thursday, before posting a 4-1 win over Robert Morris Saturday. Canisius will host a pair of non-conference contests on Saturday and Sunday, as Clarkson travels to the Buffalo State Arena. The Griffs are sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 1.67 goals per game. They have allowed 2 or fewer goals in five of the six contests this season and have allowed 1 goal in each of their last two outings. Canisius holds a 1-0-1 advantage in the all-time series against Clarkson, with the Griffs and the Golden Knights last meeting in November 2008. Canisius went 0-1-1 last weekend, picking up a 1-1 tie against Air Force on Thursday, while dropping a 1-0 decision to 2nd-ranked Minne-sota on Sunday. American International will then play its third game in five days as the Yellow Jackets travel to Hamden, Conn. to face Quinnipiac. In the last meeting between American International and the Bobcats, Quinnipiac took a 5-2 decision at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats lead the all-time series with the Yellow Jackets by a 26-10-2 margin.
