Definition: Illness of the mind that can affect the

thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person, preventing him or her from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life.

Study has shown that it is a disturbances of emotions and an imbalance in the brain.

Often identified by their inability to cope in healthful ways with life changes, demands, problems, or traumas.

Types of Mental disorders

Two types: 1. Organic disorder- caused by a physical

illness or an injury that affects the brain.

- Examples of this are brain tumors, alcoholism, infections and stroke.

2. Functional disorder- occurs as the result of psychological causes in which no brain damage is involved.

- Include or result from: stress, emotional conflict, fear, or poor coping skills.

1. Anxiety DisordersAn illness in which real, imagined,

or persistent fears prevent a person from enjoying life.

Continuous chronic anxietyArrange their lives to avoid the

object or situation that makes them anxious or fearful.

Phobias Fear so strong that a person goes to extreme

measures to avoid that object or situation. Unable to carry out daily activities Some say that a phobia is related to some

past experience that was upsetting to the person.

All though there is no longer a threat or real danger, the fear remains real.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD A person may re-live an extremely painful or

emotional numbness, dreams about the event, feelings of guilt or extreme reaction to a image.

People with hypochondria are obsessed with bodily functions and interpret normal sensations (such as heart beats, sweating, and bowel movements) or minor abnormalities (such as a runny nose, a small sore, or slightly swollen lymph nodes) as symptoms of serious medical conditions.

People with hypochondria often have other psychiatric disorders; two thirds of patients also have major depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder.

Clinical Depression Clinical depression is a serious medical illness that negatively

affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Individuals with clinical depression are unable to function as

they used to. Often they have lost interest in activities that were once enjoyable to them, and feel sad and hopeless for extended periods of time.

Clinical depression is not the same as feeling sad or depressed for a few days and then feeling better. It can affect your body, mood, thoughts, and behavior. It can change your eating habits, how you feel and think, your ability to work and study, and how you interact with people.

People who suffer from clinical depression often report that they "don't feel like themselves anymore."
