This 3 hour CE program will consider a range of mental health issues that occur in the context of cognitive decline due to de-

mentia. As individuals move through the stages of cognitive decline associated with dementia, they often also experience changes in mood, behavior and personality. Too often the changes are viewed as an expected manifestation of the dementia, but in fact, these changes also represent mental health issues that can be successfully treated and managed. This program will provide a framework to help long term care providers and other aging professionals to recognize the ways in which mental health issues present in individuals with dementia. In addition, we will offer information, tools and resources for use in responding to mental health issues, so that individuals with cognitive decline due to dementia can enjoy their highest level of function and a positive quality of life.

The Phoebe Center for Excellence in Dementia Care (CEDC)

The Center for Excellence in Dementia Care represents a unique concept in a long term care setting. Phoebe’s experience serves

as inspiration for new innovations in dementia care under development by the CEDC. Our existing array of dementia care services and supports serve as our laboratory as we develop and test new models of care. Moreover, we hope that the communities we serve and the long term care industry will benefit as the CEDC succeeds in developing, demonstrating, and implementing innovative dementia care practices and resources.
