Mental Maths and Chandos Primary School
Aims The national curriculum for mathematics aims to
ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of
mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
This means that children must be able to rapidly recall number facts, including number bonds, times tables as well as square numbers and factors.
In addition to the daily maths lesson (which normally lasts one hour) teachers deliver a 10-minute mental maths lesson.
This includes chanting tables, playing online and board games, in addition to other resources.
Half-termly ‘mental maths champion’ assemblies celebrate children’s mental maths ability.
Each year group has one mental maths target taken from their year group’s expectations. Children who achieve this target will receive a certificate in the Summer term.
