LATE BASE BALL GOSSIP. The Washington-Baltimore Peal Drags .The Brotherhood and the League. President Hewett went over to Baltimore yesterday and had a conference with \ on der Horst and Barnie of the Orioles and President Byrne of Brooklyn in regard to matters con¬ cerning a possible transfer of Baltimore to the league. It is understood that Von der Horst is making ft strong effort to induce President Hewett to trade franchises with him, and is willing to offer a large bonus of money. If he succeeds in getting his price high enough and in securing the consent of the other league clubs, witnout which nothing can be done, the result will simply be that Baltimore will take Washington's place in the league and Washing¬ ton Baltimore's place in the association. Mr. Hewett. however, is holding out strongly for a price that aluiost precludes a trade. It is be¬ lieved also that he demands a player or two from Baltimore as part of the exchange. A gentleman bearing relations of a very close nature with Mr. Hewett says that the latter de¬ clares he can have the signature of two of liis best pitchers to National league contracts any day, their brotherhood agreements to the con¬ trary notwithstanding. liA.SEXAN DECKLE* WANTS TO COVE BACK. Saul Cook, last year a catcher of Louisville, has signed with Brooklyn brotherhood. TUE EIUHr BETWEEN LEAGUE AND BHOTHKRHOOP. Just at present thore is no advantage appar¬ ent on the side of either the league or brother¬ hood in the fight for supremacy. Popular sympathy is generally with the league, but the triends of the players' organization claim that this sort of stuff is not going very far in the way of supporting base ball clubs and that if the season ever starts the crowds will soon drift to the better ball players. As matters now stand, if the two organizations were to enter the field today the brotherhood would un¬ doubtedly. on tiiis basis, have the upper hand. But, on the other hand, the friends of the league are very confident that the brotherhood will lose strength from now on and that by the time the season opens not only the sympathy but aL-o the ability will be ail on the side of the old organization. WHEN THE PINCH COMES. "Just wait," said a league enthusiast to a Stat, reporter the other day. ''Just wait until tlie snow comes and the wind gets cold and ex¬ penses begin to climb up and the summer sav¬ ings begin to melt awav: Then you will hear of brotherhood men. one after another, knock¬ ing on the doors of their old managers of the league, begging for a chance to sign. They have got to live; they have small margins for the support of their families; thev can get no advance money from the brotherhood and they find themselves forced to count, as they always have done, on getting salary for a month or two in advance on which to survive through the period of inactivity. They have always been used to doing that and they are not in a position to overcome the habit. The league will undoubtedly be prepared to offer a large bonus on each contract in the shape of advances, and 1 have no doubt that some clubs will give premiums or bounties with their con¬ tracts. 1 venture to predict that the league can have its pick of the old men.barring half a dozen of the ringleaders.before the season opens."
