Mentor A mentor is an experienced person who advises and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time. (Oxford Dictionary)

Mentorship refers to a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person (Wikipedia.org).

Mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a people who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protégé). 

Mentoring Mentoring is defined as a ‘‘one-on-one” relationship between a less experienced and a more experienced person that is pro-typically intended to advance the personal and professional growth of the less experienced individual.

 ROLE OF MENTORS

• They monitor your career growth and academic performance(s).

• They connect you e.g. admission, job, people• They advise, counsel and guide you in

decision making process.• They expose you and add value to your life.• They correct and discipline you.• They sponsor you.• They help you to build sound character.• They teach and help you to build relevant • skills by recommending trainings for you• They speak about you to those who can help

you.• They pray for you.

ROLE OF PROTÉGÉ• Do not beg your mentor for money because

it will project you as a burden.• Be obedient to your mentor’s advice. • Have good manners especially when you are with them.• Respect them and their family.• Send gifts to them no matter how little e.g. birthday,

wedding anniversary, promotion• Create time for communication. Very important!• Be sensitive to the wellbeing of your mentor(s). • Show to them you care.• Ask questions• Assist them to do their work.• Do not lie to them.• Pray for them and their family always.

WHAT MENTORSHIP IS NOT• Mentorship is not a platform for

begging.• Mentorship is not disrespectful.• Mentorship does not replace

the role of your parent or guidance.

• Mentorship is not a burden.• Mentorship is not harmful.

Otherwise, it’s very helpful.

GOLDEN BENEFITS OF MENTORSHIP• Mentors will always want you to be better

than them in life. They feel fulfilled.• Mentors charge you always and tell you to

‘‘go’’. Keep moving we’re behind you!

• The opportunity to relate with more experienced people gives you an edge over your peers.

• They remind you that failing is not falling.• They always point you back to their helper-

God.

PEOPLE ARE SPEAKING….• Investment in nursing students and effective education and mentorship

allows for greater critical thinking skills, health education competencies, and furthering of education increasing scope of practice (Shakespeare & Webb, 2008).
