Purpose The Band Program in Mediapolis serves many purposes, but the first is to create an understanding and appreciation for the Fine Arts through a well-rounded learning environment. Students will learn many concepts regarding music and preparation within the classroom and will demonstrate those concepts through performances. Expectations

1. Show respect to the teachers, guest instructors, students and equipment. 2. Be on time and prepared for all rehearsals and performances. 3. No gum, candy, flavored beverages or food around instruments and uniforms. 4. Represent your fellow students, school and community at the highest level in all

rehearsals, performances, and travel opportunities. 5. Have Fun!

1. 5th Grade Band a. Lessons

Lessons will begin the week of September 24. Each student will receive one group lesson every week. Lesson times will be assigned based on instrument groupings. During lessons, students will work on learning the individual characteristics of their instruments-such as embouchure formation, tone production and correct finger technique, while learning how to read notes, rhythms and articulations.

b. Full Group Rehearsals Full group band rehearsal will occur every Friday during the spelling time from 12:30-1:00. The first full group band rehearsal is Friday, October 19. During large group rehearsals, focus will be placed on learning rehearsal etiquette and techniques.

c. Performances The 5th Grade will be featured in three performances this year. These will consist of the Winter Band Concert on Monday, December 10th, the Spring Band Concert on Thursday, March 7th and the 5-8 Music Concert on Thursday, May 16th. The music for these performances will come from lesson books as well as other musical resources.

d. Instruments and Materials

It is recommended you rent your instrument through Griggs Music (Davenport), West Music (Iowa City), Mundt’s Piano Shop (Burlington), or purchase a used instrument through someone you know. DO NOT BUY eBAY/AMAZON/TARGET INSTRUMENTS. These sites sell Off Brands that are poorly constructed and are NOT repairable. If a key bends, or a valve is dented, repair shops will NOT accept them. In addition to their instrument, all 5th Grade Band Students should have Essential Elements Book 1 for their appropriate instrument. This can be purchased through any of the music shops or online. BRASS players should have valve oil and slide grease as needed. WOODWIND players should have multiple good reeds to play on throughout the year. Rico strength 2 reeds work great for beginners. The higher the reed number, the thicker the reed is (requiring more air and stronger embouchures to play). PERCUSSIONISTS should have a percussion kit with a bell set, practice pad and snare sticks (Vic Firth SD1). Purchasing a music stand for practice is not required; however it does make practicing that much easier!

2. Middle School (MS) Band a. Ensembles

The MS Bands are divided into 2 groups, the 6th Grade Band and the combined 7th/8th Grade Band. Full group rehearsals occur on alternating days during the Study Hall hour from 2:45-3:15. Students are released from RAPP at 2:40, and are expected to be in their seats, with instruments and music ready at 2:45.

b. Lessons Every MS Band student will attend 1 group or individual lesson each week. Lesson times and assignments are based on instruments and class schedules. Lesson groups will not exceed 3 students. Students may request to have lessons with a friend, however class scheduling takes first priority. Students may also request to have a lesson before or after school if they do not want to be pulled out of a class. Lessons are 15 minutes each.

c. Performances Both 6th and 7th/8th Bands perform at 4 concerts each year. October 15, December 10, March 7 and May 16. The 7th/8th Band will also have a performance on April 23 at the Middle School Mass Band event. 4 other Middle School Bands from area schools will come to Mediapolis for this combined band concert. Attendance at ALL performances is required. If there is an emergency and you cannot attend, please call my school phone (ex. 1122) and leave a message or send me an email. If you know of a conflicting date in advance, the earlier you communicate the better. If you do not attend a performance, see section 6 for Concert Make-Up Assignment Options. Concert attire is dress nicely. Please avoid t-shirts with logos and blue jeans. No shorts.

d. Grades MS Band students receive a grade for their participation in band. The Mediapolis Band Program uses Standard Based Grading. You may find the National Fine Arts Standards and the Mepo Band Standards that students are graded on in Section 4 and 5 of this handbook. MS Band grades are Pass/Fail. To Pass MS Band, students must Meet The Standard (M) or Exceed the Standard (E) for 67% of the tasks given.

e. Instruments/Materials Each student will be assigned an instrument locker so they may store their instrument at school. This is NOT meant to be a permanent residence for their instrument. Take them home AND PRACTICE. Students will also be assigned music and folder numbers. It is up to students to take care of their music and return it at the end of each concert.

f. Extra-Curricular Ensembles/Opportunities Middle School students may participate in extra-curricular musical events such as Solo/Ensemble Contest and Honor Band. Information regarding individual events such as those will be sent out via email as the opportunities arise. Jazz Band begins in Middle School. Any 6-8 band student may participate in MS Jazz Band. Jazz Band begins at the end of October and will perform at the December, March, and May concerts. Rehearsal time will be one morning before school each week. The day of the week will be Thursday mornings from 7:15-7:45am.

3. High School (HS) Band

a. Ensembles HS Band consists of Marching Band in the Fall, Concert Band in the Winter and Spring and Pep Band during Basketball season. Band rehearsals occur during the school day during Block 2. Additional rehearsals may be called before or after school at the discretion of the director or at the request of students.

b. Lessons High School lesson sign ups will be available during the designated spots on the Daily Lesson Schedule. Other lesson times may become available throughout the year and will be first come first serve. Students may work on anything from music for performances, preparation for scale tests, jazz music, solo/ensemble or honor band music or any other music they wish to have help with. It is up to each individual student to sign up for a time, and to attend the lesson.

c. Performances The High School Band performs in numerous places throughout the school year. Required performances outside of the standard quarterly performances include Town and Country Days Parade, All Home Football Games, Marching Contests and Festivals, Friday Basketball Games, and State Large Group. Attendance at ALL performances is required. Concert band performance attire is white tops, black bottoms, black shoes and socks. Marching attire is the provided uniform with the band t-shirt underneath, TALL black socks, and marching shoes. If there is an emergency and you cannot attend, please call my school phone (ex. 1122) and leave a message or send me an email. If you know of a conflicting date in advance, the earlier you communicate the better. Accommodations will be made for students who are in multiple activities. Examples include athletes and cheerleaders during sporting events. Typically, these events have moments where you can play with the band and rejoin the other activities, but it is understood this is not always the case. Students when excused from performances may use one of the Concert Make Up Options (section 6) to get credit for the missed performance.

d. Grades High School Band is an academic class that students receive credits for. The Mediapolis Band Program uses Standard Based Grading. You may find the National Fine Arts Standards that band students are graded on in Section 4 and 5 of this handbook, as well as the grading scale. Assignments for lessons are posted on the band website www.mepobands.org in the documents page. While the band is using Standard Based Grading, it will be translated into the 4.0 grading scale. The following percentages are based on the total % of Meets Expectation (M) earned during a grading period.

e. Instruments/Materials Each student will be assigned an instrument locker so they may store their instrument at school. This is NOT meant to be a permanent residence for your instrument. Take them home AND PRACTICE. Students will also be assigned music and folder numbers. It is up to students to take care of their music and return it at the end of each concert.

f. Extra-Curricular Ensembles/Opportunities Opportunities such as Solo/Ensemble Contest, Honor Bands and Jazz Bands are offered to high school students. Participation in such events look great on resumes and can potentially lead to scholarship opportunities in college. Details regarding these events will be sent when they are scheduled. Jazz Band will practice on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:15-7:45 after Marching Season ends.

4. National Fine Arts Standards- Instrumental Music a. The National Fine Arts Standards are the basis for our grading

requirements. Each concept a student is expected to learn will fall under one of the following Anchor Standards:

Creating Performing/Presenting/Producing Responding Connecting

The list of all expectations for each of the standards can be found on the band website (www.mepobands.org) under the Documents tab.

5. Mepo Band Standards

Students will be graded on the completion of Standards. They will be graded on the following scale:

E = Exceeds Expectation M = Meets Expectation D = Does Not Meet Expectation N = No Evidence Given

There will be some scenarios where Exceeds is not possible. For example, correct playing posture is a Meet/Does Not Meet category. Your playing posture is either correct or incorrect. There will be skills where you can exceed, such as playing tests. If exercises are performed as marked, that Meets Expectation. If exercises are performed faster than marked (when appropriate) or memorized, that Exceeds Expectation.
